Chapter 15: Six Years Ago pt. 8

Six Years Ago pt.7: **Ms. Corpuz, the two-faced Manager

Xander has given up all hopes when suddenly, he heard a loud thud.

He opened his eyes and saw Rian standing, holding a huge rock that she used to hit the man on the head.

The rock was big, like the size of an average melon. It was heavy considering that she has to lift it with both hands.

It slipped from her hands unknowingly due to shock. Just like Xander, she also didn't expected to do what she just did out of despair.

The man lost consciousness and fell sideward. Rian hurriedly helped Xander to get back on his feet.

"Why did you come back?" He panted. "Didn't I told you to run?"

Rian scoffed at these words. "Staying with you have higher odds of being safe than to walk up on some stranger on the street to ask for help."

*It's dark and dangerous outside. Some might take advantage of my situation and do something to me. This is the time where people roam the city for illicit transactions. Who knows? I might stumble upon one of them. I hate to admit it but I trust you more than a random stranger I'll be meeting on the streets.

She looked at him—his face covered with blood and bruise, his other eye was barely open due to the swelling. Blood had started to form on the cracks and cuts of his lips. It was truly an awful sight to behold.

They both looked at the stranger who is now laying on the floor, completely knocked out.

Xander kneeled on his side and presses the side of his neck below the ears.

"Is he dead?" She asked nervously.

"He's just unconscious." Xander said standing up.

Thankfully she didn't hit him too hard. It would be a pain disposing a dead body. I didn't know she's this brave.

"That's a relief", she let out a sigh of relief.

"Why do you think was he here for?" Xander looked at her.

"I—isn't he with the ones that were after you?" She said feigning ignorance.

"He's not", he replied firmly while looking at her.

Rian turned around avoiding his gaze. In her eyes, he's still not far from being a stranger and she can't tell her life's story just because he's now her savior.

Her family background has always been a sensitive topic for her that as much as possible, she doesn't want any other souls to know about it.

Xander, who realized her expression didn't asked more. "Okay, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to", he breathed. "But we should deal with this man first", looking at the one still lying unconsciously on the floor.

"Let me take care of that." Rian blurted. "I just need to make one phone call." She said while showing him a finger, gesturing the number 1.

She reached for her phone on her pocket which she swiftly picked up before running away earlier. She dialed a number but paused right before hitting the call button.

"What's wrong?" Xander asked

"U—uhm you know", she stuttered. "I'm about to call m—my grandma and s—she doesn't know that I—i took s—someone in". She said embarrassed.

Xander almost didn't get what she meant. He grinned and scratched his head.

"So, what's the plan?"

With these words Rian felt relieved that she doesn't have to explain more about what she wanted to happen.

I dialed the contact number given to me by my Grandma in case a situation like this happens.

After seconds, I heard someone on the line.

"What can I do for you Ma'am?" A familiar female voice answered and said like she already knew who I am and what I called for.

"U—uhm Hello, this is Rian. Lola said to call this number if something happens so" My sentence was cut off.

"What happened?" The voice seemed alerted. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine but someone isn't." I replied uneasily as I looked at the one lying on the floor. "Can you please come here? My address is—", she cut me off again.

"I know your address. Please stay where you are and I'll be there real quick." The voice sounded panicky as she hung up the line.

I looked at Xander who's sitting at the couch dressed with the clothes I brought him.

He's surprisingly good with any type of clothes. Then my other brain said: It's not because he looks good but because I have a great taste in picking clothes.

After five minutes, I heard someone knocking on the door.

I hurriedly went and opened it and to my surprise, a familiar face greeted me.

"Are you okay?" The restaurant's manager leaned getting closer to Rian as she placed her hands above her two shoulders.

"W—what are you...w—why are you here Ma'am?" Rian stammered confused. "No way..." She shook her head as a sudden realization dawned on her.

"Yes way." Ms. Corpuz, her manager said mockingly looking like a mean girl from highschool.

Rian stood there dumbfounded. How could be the ill-tempered, hot-headed and strict manager whom she always get a scolding from with every tiny mistake she makes at her job be the person her grandmother left in charge for her?
