Chapter sixteen
Josephine.
She sat on her bed, she didn’t want anything to do with what her father was planning, she hated the fact he could still control her life, she wanted him to change his decision, this is not where her life will end, his decision will ruin her life. It will end everything. It’s been a whole week since the incident about Britney and it’s been a good week since her neighbors got back from the hospital, she still hated Stella for everything she did, she avoided her every time she saw her. It’s been a whole week since she last saw the book and it’s been a whole week since she had her last nightmare she stopped having them since she went outside to look for the book. She felt like she needed to find the book, she was curious with what the book entitled. She even arranged all her clothes and her things but she still didn’t find anything, she lost hope.
Mamma tried to speak to her father once again but it ended with mamma crying, her father won’t change his mind, she just had to show him she is changed she is notting like the past, she won’t bring shame to the family, she needed him to change his mind because she knows once this decision is made there is notting she can do about it. She can remember vividly the day he took this decision, she just got back from college earlier than usual because her mamma called her telling her to be home urgently, her father found out Josephine kissed a guy because of a dare. That day Britney dared Josephine in front of the whole school and Jose was annoyed so she did it without thinking and Britney may or may have not took some pictures to send it to Josephine’s father. He was really mad when he saw the picture that was the day he took the decision, she begged him but he said in about a year he will execute the decision and it’s been a year since the incident and he still hasn’t forgotten he would execute his decision. Josephine through out the week has been obedient doing everything her father wants so that he can change his decision.
Today there were going to church, her father told her an important announcement would be made today, she just hopes it’s not about her. She stood up from her bed and took a quick bath, she wore a white skirt that reached her knees and a black top that covered her butt, she wore a scarf and covered her hair, her scandals and her bible on the right hand. She stayed up all night praying so that her father would change his mind, he can’t just ruin her life with one stupid decision. Once she got dressed she got out, he’s parents were already in the living.
“Buenos padre.” She said with a smile on her face, as usual the gave a nod.
Her mother was in the kitchen as usual, mamma was preparing breakfast before they leave, they were to spend all day in the church then come back later in the evening, Josephine had a long night awaiting her, she just hopes everything goes good. She hugged her mamma tightly greeting her a good morning, she wiped the tears threatening to fall, if her father was to make an announcement about her then she won’t see her Mamma for a very long time. She hated her self right now, why was she so weak when it came to him.
“Don’t cry darling, I promise everything is going to be okayNo llores querida, prometo que todo va a estar bien). Her Maman said wiping her tears.
“I don’t want to leave Mamma, that’s not the life I want.”
“I know darling, but I promise it’s all going to be alright, he didn’t tell me what he wanted to announce.”
“It’s about me right.” She asked.
“Calm down darling, I really don’t know. Come eat.”
Josephine sat down quietly, this maybe the last time she eats her Mamma’s food, she didn’t want to miss it for anything in this world. Her mamma made a Spanish breakfast tortilla espanola, it was a potato omelette, she made coffee to go with it. Josephine finished everything without a word. Once they got to the car she didn’t say a word, she remained in her world, her mamma was worried about her.
The church was full today, a whole lot of family came in today, it was a special service, everything started off good, she payed attention to everything that was going on, she even contributed to some prayer point.
Her father noticed a change in her behavior, she obeyed everything he said, she didn’t even complain, she even helped the nuns in serving the food, she remained more quite than usual, it’s like she is protecting her self from breaking down, if she spoke she would have broken into tears. She didn’t want to do this.
“Josephine can you follow the nuns and help them get some of the books out here.” He mamma said with a smile on her face.
“Sure.”
She followed them into a room with some sacred books and some catholic stories, she helped them to carry some of the boxes. They tried interacting with her but she only groaned and didn’t reply them, she had no intentions to became friends with anyone she just needed to get this over with.
She kept the box on a desk, she was asked to arrange some of the books on the desk, she barely noticed the book on the desk, she didn’t remember keeping this book here, the book looked different, the writing was different but it was the same cover. How did it get here? She didn’t remember taking it out of the box, she hurriedly hid the book inside the box, when no one was looking she went back to the room and kept the box so that after the service she could come get it.
Once she was sure the book has been kept securely, she stepped out, every step she took it’s like someone was behind her taking the same steps, she felt a presence that followed her and her every movement, she stopped in her tracks and she felt as if someone behind her stopped, she looked down peeping from behind but there was no one there. She took a step again and she heard another step behind her, she took another step and she heard another one behind her, she took one more and she heard a louder step. She stopped in her tracks and then she heard notting else.
The sounds of her heart beating filled her ears, tears rushed down her eyes, she had no idea why she was crying but the presence she felt was notting like usual, it has a strange aura, a feeling that she didn’t like at all. She decided not to look back, she walked down to the church she didn’t hear the footsteps this time. She made a mental note to take the book with her when she goes home
Her father was at the center, it was time for his announcement.
