Chapter 21: Hey baby

MAVERICK'S P.O.V

"Who is this?" I asked again when she didn't respond. It's not every time I get calls from women, especially when I didn't have many women in my life and I didn't date so much either. I thought of so many possibilities of who it was on the phone, my thoughts ran wild. I just couldn't place the voice or name a person who it could be. One thing for sure, I didn't kill anybody nor did I get any woman pregnant, I already had my fair share of women and their treatments, I knew better than to get a woman pregnant. Also because I am not ready for a child and I am nowhere close to being ready. I don't like children, not an ounce of likeness. The cries and troubles, it's frustrating and annoying. I can say I know that because I have a little cousin, my mom's sister has a little kid, a little girl of about 3 years of age. She's either crying or disturbing to get Ice Cream. I hated it when that kid came around me. She eats too much for a kid and cries too much, way too much for her own good.


"So it's true huh? I predicted right, you didn't have my number and you can't even recognize my voice" the feminine voice said and chuckled a little. I was immediately tempted to hang up the call but I wanted to know who it was and she wanted it from me. "How are you, baby?" She asked further. How am I going to answer a question I do not understand? I remained quiet.


"Who is this?" I was getting angry already.


"I see you are healthy and good," she said and chuckled again."don't you miss me?" Another question I didn't understand.


"I would have answered that if I knew who it was," I responded calmly. I tried to hide my fury. 


"I bet you would" she said, this time, she laughed. "Well, when the time is right, you'll meet with me" she said and I didn't say a word"stay safe baby, I love you" then she hung up.


What was that? I dropped the phone on the bed and drowned all my coffee. Then, I sat down on the bed and thought for some seconds trying my best to at least figure out who it was. That voice didn't sound like one that I am familiar with. I went back to the living room to find Levi there. He was seated on the couch seeing a movie.


"I bought the stake" he said and continued with the movie. 

"Some lady called," I began, "I do not know who it was, and I don't have any suspects either."


"Did she say her name?" Levi asked. Did he not hear me?

"Did you not hear me? I don't know who she is" 


"Yeah but did she say her name or something? Did she leave a clue?" Levi asked.


"No dude, she did not. If she did, I would have known who it was. Don't ask me stupid questions" 

Then I went over to sit next to him.


"How's your wife?" Levi asked


"What wife?" 

"The young woman you are getting married to" he responded. 


"I don't know. She doesn't even want to get married to me. I wonder why her parents must make her go through all these '' then I paused and looked at my phone for the time- 10:00 am. Already! "And my father, he's so serious about this, he's not always serious about me doing things, he never forces me to do anything, he lets me do anything I've always wanted. That's why I'm confused, I don't know why he's so serious about this one." 


"Have you asked him or tried declining?" Levi asked me. He was still focused on the television.


"I did, but he wouldn't say anything to me, he said something about her being safe with me. I still don't understand that statement. Plus, I can't even decline, mom makes me feel guilty anytime I say something relating to not wanting to get married. She always acts betrayed and sad. I can't go through all of that" I sighed and exhaled.


"Well, the only way to get your answers is to marry her. That's the only way you can know what exactly it is. That's all I can say though" Levi was right. Because even the young lady does not know why she's getting married to me, except that her father signed a contract. But why did he sign that? What situation could make him do it? Was it truly money?


"How's your engagement with the Senator's daughter?" 

"I met with her, my father had a date planned for us. She…-"


"Did she cause a scene?" I asked, bewildered.


"No, why will you think that?" 


"I don't know, that's mostly what that girl does. No offense, I mean she'll be yours soon"


Levi exhaled sharply and began talking, leaving out no life in his voice.


"She didn't make a scene. She was calm you know, the two times I saw her, she was crazy, but this time, she wasn't. She just kept complaining how the food wasn't as good as she expected. We met at one of my father's hotels. She asked if I could employ better chefs" He smiled.


"Are you smitten?" I was surprised with the way he acted. When he spoke about this girl before now, he spoke with disgust.


"No, dude, I'm just saying that she was cool unlike usual with her blonde curly hair flowing down to her collarbone. She was beautiful, at least this time, she was"


"Shut up bro" I said and he laughed. We both laughed out loud enough.


Levi's family was the Billz Gold group. Their name is ancestral and because of that they had so many companies under them. They always did things to keep the family name and all that stuff. The reason he was marrying the Senator's daughter was because he had to keep the family going. And the Senator's power will go a long way for them. At least he knew why he was getting married to her but in my case I didn't know why. My phone beeped and I looked at it. It was a message from Maya.

"GOOD DAY SIR, I WAS ONLY TEXTING TO KNOW IF YOU ARE OKAY. I HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR WEEK AND BE GOOD SIR." 


I smiled and texted her back, but come to think of it, why did she text me? It's not like something she did before.
