Chapter 16

CHAPTER 16

DOLLY isn't used to dressing grand and lavishly. When Max made her choose between the elegant clothes he had personally picked, she felt a fleeting emotion of obtaining something rare. Dolly was scared to get used to such feelings. She's afraid of wanting more of this.

Wearing a bright yellow skirt and white blouse, she appeared jubilant and even pure. The silver necklace on her neck made her look delicate and refined.

"This... is lovely, Max." Dolly swayed and watch the hem of the skirt follow her movements. "They feel so soft on my skin!"

"It suits you very well."

"I-I'm afraid of tearing them up."

Max' smile freezes on his face. He reach his hand out to grab Dolly's right hand and twirl the woman in front of him. "Tear them. Go on. I'd be more than happy to see them fall."

Dolly's cheeks flush a crimson hue. She patted Max' shoulder before mumbling quietly, "Are we going to meet the rest of your family now?"

"Yes." Max pursed his lips. "And you're not going to meet the coven this week. Not when we've not exchanged our bites yet. There would be a lot of traitors going after you in order to get to me."

"Then... we should claim..." Dolly's words became obscured by immense embarrassment. "Tonight. We should not drag this for so long. Your status is not something to be taken lightly."

"It's okay. You don't have to be nervous about that. I'm still safe under the vacation notice that Janette came up for me. No one will find me until then. We have to do this in your pace."

Dolly can hear several footsteps outside their room. She lifted a questioning brow at Max. The man only smiled sheepishly. "Although I said that no one will find me, I still have to take some men just to make sure we'll both be safe. Come, you'll meet Jeffrey soon."

'His nephew?' Dolly reigned every bit of self control in Max' mind yesterday just to stop him from scolding the kid. For her, there's no one that should be blamed in their situation.

Janette's request of meeting with her is not something that she cannot give. The woman is a part of Max' family. The only sibling that he had. Dolly naturally won't be greedy to her though Dolly has to work during that time too. Her plans about making some money still perceived in her mind.

But as of this day, her focus should be helping the two siblings forgive each other.

'We can solve each problem with peace talks. Violence is not the answer to everything!'

JEFFREY mulled over the details of the last murder victim in the potential serial killer case that they are investigating. Another woman has fallen into that demon's love trap. The body has the defining description of psychosis before dying. There was a CCTV footage of her last moments before she crossed the road to get inside a decapitated building. Where her body was discovered with a slash gaping on her neck.

It's still disgusting. He had been fighting the urge to puke for the whole morning, and Cedric's attitude doesn't help him at all.

"Why are you so slow? I put you to the outside part of the formation so you won't cause any disturbance with His Excellency and his mate. But it looks like you're the one that's going to get us in trouble." Cedric took a huge gulp out of his soda can before he mouthed with relish, "You could've just submitted an absence letter for the day and you'll still be here. Not that your presence would contribute to the group this time."

Jeffrey was used to this by now. He no longer cared what his colleagues thought of him. He can even feel his face thickening with all the insults that honed his skin to be impenetrable. Jeffrey only regarded his boss right now as a broken cassette tape that won't just quit.

But it doesn't mean that he will tolerate him speaking to him like that in front of his Uncle Max.

His uncle specifically given him the permission to act wildly and be carefree with this work. Jeffrey kept his mouth shut in the office because that's Cedric's territory, and he needed to show respect.

Not in front of his Uncle Max.

Never insult him in front of his idol.

"Maybe if I did get the experience that I can acquire from field work, then I would've known how to act in this setting. Sorry, boss, your insults everyday doesn't contain the proper execution of how to be a valiant bodyguard. I could only stand stiffly right now." Jeffrey blinked slowly. "I promise to ask my colleagues how the next time since they are more capable of handling a newbie like me. I have to meet His Excellency to greet him and his mate. Please, excuse me."

Jeffrey run out of the room without sparing Cedric a glance. He can hear someone gritting their teeth loudly. He no longer needed to guess who might that be.

"Huh... I thought you're going to let him grind you down further, kid." Max' raised a palm. Jeffrey's unstoppable feet met the force of something immovable. He could only stand still and bow. "Uncle, good morning."

"You're now more formal, hmn." He tsk-ed. "That Cedric has been using the liberty as a boss to play with you everyday. Do you want to request a shift?"

Jeffrey's mouth opened slightly. He almost agreed immediately without thinking about it. That speaks volume of his opinion about his boss.

"I... I want to help investigating the series of attacks happening around our territory lately, uncle." His lips pulled into a thin line. "The monstrosity behind those actions, I simply couldn't sleep at night thinking about it."

"You can always go to the investigation team. Cedric's people are only there for the initial findings to help with the obvious pots. The investigation team only consists of five person. That's why they needed help with Cedric's office sometimes. If you want to transfer, tell me."

"Really?!" Jeffrey swallowed. He forgot about his colleagues in an instant. His boss always made it hard for him so he never got the chance to be friendly with most of them. Leaving them behind doesn't really matter to him. "Then... I'll go, uncle."

Max' eyes squinted in satisfaction. "Good. Now, let's go see your aunt. She's enjoying the strawberry cake a lot, she hates to stand and part with it."
