Chapter 133
Scouring the ground around his feet, Cadon looked at all the piles of ash that he could find on the ground. He didn't see the key anywhere. Around him, the battle raged on. But he was already past most of the action. The further into the prison he sprinted, the more likely he was to run into groups of Vampires that had not been caught up in the fight yet.
"Heather, where the hell are you?" Cadon tried to use his IAC to find her, but he couldn't pinpoint her location based on what he could see through her own visuals or the rest of the teams’.
“I'm coming, damnit. If you haven't noticed, there's a goddamn bunch of Vampires between me and you, dumbass. I'll be there when I get there."
Whether it was the Vampires attacking her or just her normal disposition that made her so salty, Cadon wasn't sure. But he had no choice at this point but to continue on his way, searching for the key as he went. At least the bullet hole in his arm was beginning to heal itself.
Up ahead of him, Cadon could hear single gunshots firing. The idea that he was about to run into the assassins who were killing his team members entered his mind. He spun around to look behind him, trying to see who was the closest to his location, but at this point, he couldn't see anyone else. He had to keep going.
Rounding the corner, Cadon saw two Vampires entering a cell. Each of them had a weapon drawn and ready to fire. Taking aim, Cadon fired his own gun at the closest Vampire. The man swiveled to look at him as the bullet entered his chest, and a puff of gray ash came flying out the back. He didn't disintegrate right away, though. Instead, he fired his gun at Cadon. The Guardian ducked out of the way and fired two more shots. One hit the Vampire in the head, sending him flying backward, and the other one hit his chest. The Vampire screeched as he turned into a pile of dust.
The second Vampire turned to see Cadon coming in his direction and began to fire at him, but from inside of the cell, an arm emerged. Whoever they had been trying to slaughter was fighting back now. Cadon had to be careful not to catch his team member in his line of fire.
His teammate from inside of the cell reached for the gun and yanked it up just as the Vampire was firing. The shot went into the ceiling, not harming anyone. A blur of motion in front of him told Cadon that this person had things under control. He saw a flash of long red hair and realized that this was Aurora's cell.
Thinking that she would have things resolved by the time he got to her, Cadon sped up. Sure enough, Aurora slammed her fist into the Vampire’s face and drove her elbow deep into his sternum before she yanked the gun from his hand and used it to shoot him in the head. Another puff of ash, another scream, and that Vampire was gone as well.
"Hi there, McReynolds," Aurora said as she joined in the hunt. "It's nice to see you, kid."
There wasn't much time to respond. Just because the two Vampires that had been about to assassinate Aurora had been stopped, that didn't mean there weren't more teams of Vampires down the hallway killing their friends.
Over his shoulder, Cadon shouted, "It's nice to see you too, Roar."
The cell next to Aurora's was occupied, but Cadon couldn't get into it because he didn't have the key, and Heather had not caught up to them yet.
Again, Cadon looked at the ground. “Where the fuck is the key?” he asked. "We can't help anybody if we can't find the goddamn key."
Now that Aurora was armed, she was even more dangerous than she usually was. She ran alongside him as the two of them looked furiously for the key or for the Vampires that were killing their teammates further down the row.
The solution presented itself In the form of a Vampire barging into a cell in order to kill another LIGHTS team member. This female Vampire wore a keyring dangling from her belt.
"There it is!" Aurora yelled, pointing at the bitch. Both of them fired at the same time, knocking the female Vampire backward. She was a large woman, and it took a few more shots to keep her down, but eventually, she shrieked like the other Vampires had done, and turned into a pile of ash on the prison floor.
"You get the key, and I'll keep hunting," Cadon told Aurora. "You know where all of the prisoners are being held.”
"Whatever you say, McReynolds," the redhead said as she dove for the keys. They were on a catwalk now, and there was the possibility that the keys could fall to the floor below them. Neither of them wanted to see that happen.
Cadon jumped over the pile of ash from the Vampire that had just been destroyed and continued on his way down the hall looking for more Vampires to kill.
He hadn’t made it very far when he heard another commotion behind him. He turned to see all of the cells opening simultaneously. It seemed that Heather had finally caught up to him just about the same time that he didn't need her anymore. At least this way Aurora would be free to fight, and all of the prisoners could run out at once. He had to wonder, though, if Heather's powers had reached every cell in the facility or if there were still some prisoners locked behind bars.
The only way to find out was to continue to run down the hallway, looking for Vampires, and looking for his teammates that might still be locked up.
The further he ran, the darker it got, and the more distant the rest of his team seemed to become. Why no one else was able to get around the Vampires as quickly as he had been able to, he couldn't say. Maybe the rest of them were so focused on killing those Vampires that no one else had thought about simply going around to find more of their teammates. But Cadon had now taken it upon himself to locate as many prisoners as possible, and as he ran down a dark hallway, he saw plenty of bodies coming at him. He just had to hope that the majority of them were Guardians and Hunters and not Vampires.
