Chapter 154
“Do you want to hold your mom’s hand?” Jamie asked Mallory as she lay on the operating table in his office. Cadon couldn’t believe how quickly everything was beginning to look like it used to. Even with the American government under collapse and citizens taking it upon themselves to hunt down Vampires and dispatch them, despite the laws that were still on the records, furniture, and other supplies were not that hard to find if one knew where to look–apparently.
“Yeah, I’d like to hold her hand,” Mallory replied. She was so nervous, Cadon could see her shaking from his spot behind Jamie and slightly to the Healer’s left. Annastasia was standing on her daughter’s other side and had no problem taking her hand.
“It’ll be fine,” Jamie assured her. Cadon had lost count of how many times he’d said those words. “Just try to keep your muscles relaxed as best you can, and it’ll be over in a few minutes.”
Mallory didn’t move or speak an answer. She only lay there with her eyes focused above her.
Jamie finished preparing the two shots he’d be giving. The first one was the Transformation serum, and the second one was the pain medicine that would make the pain go away, but she had to wait two minutes between the two shots, and that’s where the pain could potentially come in.
“I’m going to clean your arm off, and then, we’ll be ready, okay?” Jamie asked. This time, Mallory gave him a quick nod. Cadon wished there was something he could do to make her feel better, but the only LIGHTS member he knew of who could control other people’s emotions was Hannah, and they still hadn’t figured out where she was. He was helpless, only capable of watching as Mallory underwent the procedure.
Jamie looked at Annastasia, and the mother nodded. A second later, he picked up the first needle and administered the injection into a vein near her elbow. Mallory grimaced and tears began to stream from her eyes. She squealed a little bit, but she didn’t scream, which was what Cadon thought might happen.
The Healer set a timer for the two minutes he would have to wait before he could stick the other needle in and administer the pain medicine. Time seemed to be standing still as tears continued to roll down Mallory’s cheeks.
If it hurt too much, Jamie could cure it, but Cadon knew that Jamie didn’t like to interfere with the Transformation process for fear something could go wrong. So far, Mallory seemed to be doing okay. It might even be her fear that was causing the few tears she was shedding, not pain.
The timer went off. Jamie clicked a button to silence it and then picked up the second needle. A few seconds later, the second shot was in, and Mallory’s eyes began to slowly close.
“There we go,” Jamie said, satisfied that everything had gone well. “She could sleep for a couple of hours or a couple of days,” he told Annastasia. “We’ll monitor her and keep an eye on her progress.” He placed a bandage on her arm where the shots had been administered.
“Thank you, Jamie,” Annastasia said, a little teary-eyed herself.
“No problem. I better get used to administering these again. My understanding is that there are a ton of people who want to Transform now that Vampires are no longer completely in charge.”
“Really?” Annastasia asked. “Well, I guess that makes sense. Do you think we’ll get the law changed soon so that LIGHTS is no longer illegal?”
“I think we will,” Jamie said. “Most people realize now that they should’ve never trusted the Vampires to begin with. Now that Holland is gone, and they are so much easier to kill, anyone who hasn’t been turned wants their old way of life back.”
Cadon was only half-listening to the conversation around him. He was mostly watching Mallory. Her eyes were fully closed now, and the tears had dried up, but her mouth was moving. Annastasia noticed just before Jamie did. They exchanged a puzzled glance, and then Jamie bent down to her mouth to see if he could hear her. “I’m not sure what she’s trying to tell us,” the Healer said.
Annastasia tried, too, but when she stood up, she said, “I don’t know either.”
Cadon took a few steps closer. He didn’t have to bend down to be able to make it out. He could see her lips moving and knew what she was saying, and it made his heart flutter in his chest.
“Cadon, don’t let me fall.”
