CHAPTER 106
WINTER
"Trust me, if Zion tries anything, Harry won’t let it slide. And Zion knows better than to mess with him.”
I nod, the explanation making sense, but it doesn’t ease the strange tension in my chest.
Claire raises an eyebrow, a teasing grin tugging at her lips.
"So, what did you whisper in Harry’s ear? Zion looked like he was about to explode."
I shrug, my voice quiet and uncertain.
"Nothing much. I just asked him why he was hanging out with Zion. I thought Harry was supposed to be my friend, but he didn’t answer me. He just gave me this look... and stayed quiet. So, I walked away."
Claire lets out a long breath, her hand resting reassuringly on my shoulder.
"Winter, Harry’s just trying to keep the peace right now, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten who’s in the wrong. Trust him, okay? He’s got your back, no matter what."
I nod again, trying to push away the nagging doubts. But as I look back at Zion, the unease lingers.
There’s something about him tonight—something that feels off, and I can’t shake the feeling that whatever it is, it’s only the beginning.
"Summer... Yoo-hoo, Summer," a sickly sweet voice calls out, pulling me from my thoughts. I turn to see Cindy standing there with a too-bright smile plastered on her face.
"It’s Winter," I correct, barely keeping the irritation out of my voice.
She waves a hand dismissively. "Summer, Winter, Autumn... same difference."
I clench my jaw but manage to keep my expression neutral. "I didn’t expect you to show up after everything that went down at college," she adds, her voice dripping with fake concern.
"Of course I came," I say, squaring my shoulders. "I’m not afraid of anyone, and I don’t let others decide where I belong." My words hit her like a slap, and I saw the colour drain from her face.
Yeah, Cindy, so why don’t you do us all a favour and go find something else to do? Like sucking a dick—since you’re so talented at it." Claire interjects sharply. Cindy’s smile immediately fades, replaced by a scowl. Without another word, she turns on her heel and stalks away, leaving me with a fleeting sense of triumph.
Cindy’s face flushes with anger, but she holds her ground. I notice a small crowd beginning to form, but honestly, I couldn’t care less. I’m here to focus on my studies and improve my mom’s life, not to win friends or impress people. The last thing I need is to get caught up in the drama of superficial people.
“At least I’m getting some action,” Cindy retorts, glancing smugly at her group of friends.
“Good for you. Just make sure to keep track of your partners so you know who the baby daddy is if you end up pregnant,” Claire shoots back without missing a beat.
Cindy’s sharp intake of breath barely registers as I turn on my heel and walk away, frustration simmering beneath the surface.
Cindy scoffs, her voice oozing with mock superiority.
“Ah, you're just jealous, Claire. The guys all drool over me whenever I walk by. Unlike you, who doesn’t even register on their radar.”
Claire doesn’t flinch, her expression ice-cold.
“Jealous? Please. First of all, my twin made sure I’m untouchable. Off limits...And second, I don’t need to dress like a walking invitation to get attention. Now, why don’t you run along and play your little games, Cindy? We’re done here.”
With a casual flick of her hand, Claire dismisses Cindy as though she’s nothing more than a pesky fly, turning her attention back to me as if the conversation never happened.
I couldn’t help it—Cindy’s face was a masterpiece of inflated arrogance, and Claire’s reply was just too perfect. I tried to stifle the laugh building in my chest, but it slipped out anyway, a soft chuckle I couldn’t quite contain.
Cindy’s glare could’ve melted steel. Her eyes practically blazed, narrowing into dangerous slits.
“You got something to say, Summer?” she snapped, her voice dripping with venom.
Summer... whatever. I wasn’t about to give her the satisfaction of backing down. I shrugged nonchalantly, letting the sweetest, most fake smile spread across my face.
“What can I say?” I drawled, my tone dripping with sarcasm. “What Claire said. And just so we’re clear, it’s Winter, not Summer. Maybe try using that one brain cell you’ve got left.”
With that, I spun on my heel, walking away with a quiet satisfaction as her angry mutterings echoed behind me.
