TWENTY-ONE: THE TEXT

LIAM

"Excuse me, do you have a problem with me?" Kim asked Odette.

I saw the surprise in Odette's eyes as she looked at her. "Why would I? I don't know you from anywhere, except news and now."

"Exactly, but you keep making derogatory remarks about me," Kim snapped.

"Hey, babe," I said trying to step in.

"Hey babe?" she turned sharply to look at me. "Did you hear when she was saying sh*t to me?"

I didn't know if she had any idea who Odette was, but I knew I have to stop her before it gets worse. Kim was an angry soul and has no respect for anyone. "Not now, baby."

"You know what?" she asked raising her hands. "I am done here. I will be waiting in the car." She stormed out without looking back.

Odette and I watched her as she went out of the store. I turned to Odette who was glaring at me and clasped my hands together, pleading with my eyes. "I'm so sorry, she can get moody at times."

"Caution her next time, I won't have that cheap whore coming to my store and insulting me."

"It won't happen again."

I paid for the rest of the clothes and went out, Kim was standing beside the car, looking at her phone, and ignored me completely when I walked up to her. I unlocked the car and tossed the wears into the backseat. She didn't wait for me to open the door for her, she went in and banged the door and it closed with a heavy thud. I went over to the driver's seat. The ride back home was silent.

Aiden was in front of the house when we arrived and when I parked the car, she got out and started towards the house without waiting for me. I quickly followed her. I don't get it, I was supposed to be mad at her for putting up an attitude in front of my friend, but here she was fuming and it was really pissing me off.

"Kim, what's the meaning of this?" I asked as I followed her towards the building.

Aiden frowned when he saw us approaching like that. "Is everything alright?" he asked, but Kim was storming past him, but he held her back. She stopped and bent her head. I stopped when Aiden looked at me with a what-did-you-do-to-her look. I was about to defend myself, but Aiden started going inside with her.

"Let's go solve this inside," he said.

I followed them. When we got to the stairs, she stopped abruptly and looked up at Aiden.

"Can I go somewhere quickly?"

"You can't..." I started saying but Aiden shot me a look that suggested I keep quiet. I closed my mouth, angry at her and Aiden.

"Would you be back tonight?" he asked. She nodded. "I will drop you off then."

"No, I will take the bus," she said quickly.

"I will tell the chauffeur to drop you off wherever you are heading to," Aiden insisted. She nodded. Aiden called one of my chauffeurs and she left without even as much as looking at me.

"Why do you keep siding that woman?" I asked Aiden when she left.

Aiden looked at me. "Really? Liam, you are being hard on her." He started climbing the stairs.

I chuckled sarcastically and followed him up the stairs. "Being hard on her? Aiden I...What the hell are you talking about? You keep taking sides with her each time without knowing what the problem really is.

Aiden stopped and turned sharply to look at me. "Liam, Kim's a sweet girl, but you are always insensitive." He started going up again.

"Insensitive? What's with everyone calling me insensitive today? Did she tell you to tell me that or did you tell her to say that to me? Or wait," I said and stopped abruptly, making Aiden halt too. "Is there something you are not telling me? Do you like this woman?"

"What's there not to like?" Aiden asked casually and started up the stairs again.

I stood staring at his back in bewilderment for a while. "Dude, are you joking right now? She is my girlfriend!"

"Your fake girlfriend you mean? I can date her for real!" Aiden called casually.

I was aghast. What did he just say? I felt anger tugging at my heart. Not really anger, something more than anger, something I couldn't really understand. Was Aiden not supposed to be my best friend? Why was he liking a girl I was dating? He had never done that before, in fact, he doesn't concern himself with any of my conquests. Maybe, I shouldn't have given him all the responsibility of finding her.

A few hours later, I was in my room pacing about, wondering why she wasn't back yet. Her location on my phone was at a coffee shop and she had been there since she left. I wondered what she was doing there. Was she working part-time there? I kept looking at the screen of my phone, but she wasn't moving and I didn't want to ask Aiden about it or her, I didn't like that he knew about her more than I do. I resolved to be more involved with her, after all, it was for my own good.

Another hour passed and she still wasn't moving from there, I flopped down on the couch in my room, tapping my hand on the armrest and my feet on the floor. I took up my phone again and decided to text her. I opened my inbox and started typing.

'Hey, you should be here by now.'

I looked at the message again and shook my head, wiping it completely. She would feel it was insensitive of me. What should I type that would be less forward?

'It's late, come back now.'

That was even worse. I huffed, wiped it, tossed my phone aside, and lay on the couch, staring at the ceiling, then my mind started wandering. What if Aiden was texting her? I sat up immediately at that thought and grabbed my phone again. I should type something to melt her heart. I was good with flattering women, but with her, I didn't know what to expect. It might be too cheesy.

'We have a long way tomorrow, you should come back now'

I wiped the last sentence. 'We have a long way tomorrow, don't you think you should come back now?'

I looked at it and imagined the scowl on her face when she reads it, and she would probably ignore it. Maybe, I should send her something romantic. I wiped the message.

'I miss you.'

I stared at it for a while, knowing I would never send that to her. My thumb hung over the send icon for a while and I was about to start wiping it when my phone rang, vibrating and making my thumb click the send button and it went. I glared at the screen. Sandra flashed on the screen.

"What the...?" I cussed. If I had the power, I could strangle Sandra from where I was. I declined the call and stared at the message I just sent and the letters seems to be smiling at me.
