Chapter 19

***Serafina's POV***

I slowly open my eyes. My vision is still blurry but I still manage to recognize his face. I can't help but smile seeing him the moment I woke up.

"How are you feeling?" he asked in a serious tone. The worry filling his eyes before I completely lost my consciousness was now gone. He was back to being the cold King Calixto that I knew.

I slowly got up so he held me helping me to sit on my bed.

"My head hurts a bit and I still feel weak. What did the doctor say? Am I sick?" I asked unable to hide the fear in my voice.

I am already weak what more if I end up being sick. How can I fulfill my responsibility as the Queen of this Kingdom if I fall ill? I don't have time to be sick. I only have a month to be pregnant.

"They are still doing examination but the doctor told me that you are getting weaker each day and if this continues..." he paused arousing my curiosity.

"What King Calixto? If this continues what will happen to me?"

He cleared his throat and looked at me intently. "You might die Serafina,"

I froze in place. It feels like a huge block was thrown at me crushing me bit by bit. I can feel tears forming in the corner of my eyes. I tried to laugh it off as I shook my head but tears still cascaded on my face.

"I can't die I need to bear you an heir first. I need to fulfill my duty as your Queen. I don't want to die yet King Calixto," I held his hand and started begging as if my life was in his palm.

He did not say anything. He just stared at my face then after a while he pulled me into a tight hug and started caressing my back.

"You won't die Serafina. I won't let my Queen die," he whispered as he hugged me filled with warmth.

I buried my face on his shoulder even more as I let my tears fall freely from my eyes.

"King Calixto,"

King Calixto broke off the hug when Cressida's voice echoed in the room.

"Lady Ysobel wants to talk to you," she added.

They look at each other and talk through their eyes using a language that only they can understand. Cressida may not say it loudly but the way she clenched her fist tells me that she's mad.

When King Calixto stood instead of leaving the room he walked towards Cressida and tried to hold her neck but she took a step back refusing to be touched.

"Someone might see us," I heard Cressida uttered.

"Why are you here? You should not be working? You still need to rest Cressida,"

The way King Calixto talks to her is gentle making me feel jealous again even though I don't have the right to feel that way. It was too painful to watch them so I looked away and stared at the blank wall.

"You should go, King Calixto, Lady Ysobel is waiting for you,"

I wanted to look at their direction again to see how he responded but I fought the urge to do that. I contented myself by staring at the blank wall until I heard King Calixto's footsteps disappearing. When I heard him opening the door that's when I chose to look at Cressida.

I cleared my throat and tried to smile at her. "I am sorry for putting your life in danger Cressida," I uttered weakly.

She was silent. She was just staring at me and it made me uncomfortable. I could take it if she shouted at me and slapped me in the face because her silence made me feel even more horrible.

"Are you mad at me?"

That was a stupid question. Of course, she is mad at you Serafina. She almost died because of your stupid plan.

"I don't have the right to be mad at you Queen Serafina,"

She walked towards my bed and sat on the small chair beside it. She took the basin from the bedside table and put it on her lap then she held my hand and started washing it with the warm water from the basin.

"Rumors are spreading that you have an incurable illness. The whole Kingdom wants a new Queen but do you want to know what King Calixto said?"

I looked at her filled with confusion as I anticipated her next words. "To just wait for you to die before he finds a new Queen," she added as she suppressed her laughter.

I immediately pulled my hand from her hold. "You are lying Cressida. That's not true. He told me he won't let me die. He told me he won't let his Queen die,"

Tears started falling from my eyes but I did not even see pity in Cressida's eyes instead her lips rose for an evil smile then she held my arm and forcefully pulled me closer to her making our faces a few inches away from each other.

"He made a promise to me too, Serafina. He told me that once you are gone I will be the new Queen of this Kingdom. He was just fulfilling his mother's wish to marry you and once you are gone he will fight for us. He will reveal to the whole Kingdom that I am his mate. Now tell me Serafina, which promise will he fulfill?"

I know I can't compete with her. I know King Calixto will always choose her over me but I don't want to trust Cressida's words. I want to hear it directly from King Calixto.

"I need to hear it directly from him. I cannot trust your words Cressida,"

I have received tons of hurtful words from King Calixto so it won't be impossible that Cressida is telling the truth but I am still having a hard time accepting it. I want to hear it myself maybe...just maybe I could stop myself from hoping that I can make him fall for me.

Even though I still felt weak I forced myself to get off the bed and stepped out of the room. I have no idea where he is but I found myself walking towards Lady Ysobel's chamber. I held the palace wall to support my body because I would end up falling on the floor if I depended on my feet.

After a few minutes of walking, I finally reached Lady Ysobel's chamber. The door was slightly open so I walked even closer to take a look inside and there I saw Lady Ysobel talking to King Calixto.

Lady Ysobel looks mad while looking at her son but I can't see King Calixto's reaction because all I can see is his back.

"You think I didn't know Calixto? Don't take me for a fool because I am your mother?! I know that you are mated to Cressida. I know that you are secretly meeting that filthy servant,"

"Don't call her that way Mom! I love Cressida so don't you dare insult her,"

Lady Ysobel looked at her son in disbelief.

"You have lost your mind, Calixto. You allowed yourself to be tied to a mere servant. You are the King of the Kingdom. I chose a decent Queen for you-"

"But I don't love her!" he shouted cutting his mother off.

I have heard him say those words a thousand times. He keeps rubbing it on my face that he does not love me but why does it still hurt? Why am I still not numb from the pain?

"So you must be happy now that Serafina is dying? You and your mistress must be celebrating because your poor wife is getting weaker day by day. You want her gone right Calixto?"

He fell silent but after a while, I saw him nod shattering my heart even more.
