Chapter 33
Third persons POV
True to his word ,Marcus filled a lawsuit against Zawadi. The documents were sent to her house but there was no response. The lawyer representing her and his lawyers were supposed to meet and decide whether they should proceed to court or deal with the matter without involving the court . Due to lack of a response from her side ,a court mandated attorney took over the case to represent her.
The search of Ms Zawadi continued. With the court day fast approaching John had to save his friend's life. It was against the rules for a lawyer from the complaint side to help the other side. But he did it anyway. He didn't care that he could loose his job. He couldn't live with the guilt of knowing he could have done something to help his friend but he choose not to.
With a very worried Zuri by his side, they left to look for Zawadi. First they went to her house, the first place anyone could find her. They found her house alright but it was in an horrible state. Some of her furnitures were broken and thrown carelessly around the house. Her electric were broken, cords cut leaving the useless. Her couch had seen better days and her pillows were ripped showing the feathers inside. In short her house was a horror to look at. They carefully checked all the other rooms.
Her kitchen was almost the same state as her living room. Her utensils were broken and left on the floor. Her flour was spread on the broken utensils and her cereals were soaked in water. The people doing this made sure to ruin everything. Her bedroom was the only room they left untouched. From the look of things she left in a hurry as everything was left in it's place ,or so Zuri says.
Zuri checked for her emergency bag and she found it in her closet ,where it was supposed to be and untouched.
All her clothes were still in her closet. She left with nothing . She was in a hurry and from the look of things she was being chased. Who could have done this? The two adults and one child searched the house but came up with nothing meaningful .
They called kelvin, her friend from work and he was more insightful. He was also searching for Zawadi during his free time but he was yet to find her. John asked him to tell them about the last day they saw each other.
" Well, Zawadi was feeling sick,so we did a pregnancy test" said Kevin
" Why" asked Zuri
" She was seeing the asshole who broke her heart years ago" growled Kevin.
" Shit! What?" Asked a suprised Zuri.
John was also suprised by the turn of events, he didn't expect to here that. They came looking for answers but they ended up with more questions. So those two were back together and none of them had any idea . Zuri felt betrayed by her friend failing to confide in her. She thought they were best friends. They told each other everything. However her heart broke for what her friend was going through all alone.
" We did a pregnancy test and it turned out to be positive" finished Kevin
" Jesus Christ! That explains alot" said John in understanding.
" What do you mean , love?" Asked Zuri.
" Zawadi found out she was pregnant and then she goes missing. Her house is a mess and she couldn't have done that herself . Someone must have known that she is pregnant and sent people to capture or kill her" John tried putting the pieces together.
" But who would do that, I mean send people to kill her. Zawadi is a saint" cried Zuri
" Not when she is pregnant with an engaged man's baby" stated Kevin
" Precisely. " Added John
" Is it possible any of them did this to her?" asked a crying Zuri.
" As for Marcus, no I don't think so. But for Katelyn and Jake, they can" sighed John
They all took a few minutes to digest their findings. Their friend was seeing an engaged man but choose not to confide in them. Maybe she felt guilty for her actions or she didn't want to be judged, either way it didn't matter now .In their minds they felt guilty that they didn't seek her out more. She went through all this alone.
" She must have been terrified " wailed Zuri
" Yes, I can't imagine what happened. I hope she is safe" said Kevin.
" Why didn't she ask us for help ?We would all have helped her in a heartbeat " stated Zuri.
"Babe, she couldn't have called us. You know how Zuri is ,she wouldn't wanted me to loose my job because of her . She couldn't tell you because you would have told me .
And as for Kevin ,she didn't tell him because Marcus knows him too " explained John.
" She was keeping us safe" whispered Zuri in understanding.
"I believe so"
" What do we do now? "Asked Kevin
" We will go to her parents house then back home" said John
" Please call me with updates" asked Kevin
" We will ,thank you for all your help."
With that the party of three drove to her parents house. Her parents knew nothing of what was going on. They were also worried as they had not heard from her in a while. Since they had no further information to give, Zuri and John headed back home but not before they promised her parents to call if they found anything.
They arrived home tired and with more questions than answers going through their minds.
The next day John went to work with one goal in mind ,to speak to his boss. He talked to boss's secretary to make sure he was free before he could go in. He took a deep breath before he knocked on the door to the dragons lair.
" Come in" said the voice inside.
John took slow but steady steps trying to prolong the inevitable. His boss was busy typing away on his laptop ,his face tense as he worked.
' maybe I should have come later on' he thought
" Take a seat John ,how can I help you?" Asked his boss without lifting his head to look at him.
John took the seat offered, cleared his throat loudly making his boss stop typing. Marcus sat straighter and watched his lawyer gather his thoughts.
" I want us to talk about this lawsuit you filled against Zawadi" John started
" Why? Do you have any concerns?" His boss asked
" I am concerned that Zawadi is nowhere to be found. She is missing "
" How would you know she is missing?" He hissed
" We went looking for her during the weekend with my wife. Zuri was worried about her" John explained
" And did you find her?" Asked a very worried Marcus even though he didn't show it.
" No. She is nowhere to be found. We met her friend and parents and none of them know where she is. She has not communicated with any of them in the last two months"
" That is strange but it doesn't matter. She has to appear before the court or they will rule in my favour"
" That is the thing, we should delay the proceedings until we find her" he argued
" Why would I ever do anything to help her ? She has stolen from me more than twice. She needs to face justice " snapped Marcus.
" I know you feel hurt but doing this will not make you feel any better."
" It will. At least I will get my money back. That is all I care about " he retorted .
" Fine! If you want to go through this path that is on you. All I am saying is we should gather our resources and look for her. She is in danger "
" In danger? Of what? Well except paying me back and serving her term"
" We went to her house, everything was broken and thrown all around. Someone broke into her house from the look of things. And then she disappears , don't you find that suspicious?"
" All I hear is pure speculations. She could have done all that to throw us of her trail. I don't buy it"
His boss's statement made him loose the tight rope he used to hold his anger. His boss was too proud to see that the love of his life was in danger.
" If you are not willing to help that is fine, I am going to look for her " said John before he stood up and headed for the door.
" You will do no such thing!" Demanded Marcus
" Why wouldn't I? She is my friend "
" I don't care ,you work for me and when I say you can't get involved,you can't "
" Did you have something to do with this?" Asked a furious John.
" What? No! Why would you think that?"
" Your behavior and attitude are the problem. I will look for her even if it will cost me my job" announced John
" Don't try me John, don't you need this job" growled Marcus.
John walked away ,letting the door close behind him. He made the decision to help his friend even if he lost his job in the process. His purpose was clear.
