Chapter 28(part 1)
MATTEO'S POV~
"Old habits die when we then grow new ones."
"What is it?" I asked when we were finally seated in my office. He didn't say anything for a while, sitting there watching me.
"I'm still waiting for the device," he announced leaning back on the seat. I observed him for some time, he looked like he had more things to say but he was holding back.
"Yes, I promised to deliver it to you today." I looked at my wristwatch. "But the day is far from over, so there's still time."
"Okay," he nodded, looking around the office. We have enveloped in an uncomfortable silence once again before he hummed a strange song nodding his head.
"Cut the shit out Markov, What do you want from me?" I questioned impatiently at his hesitance. He then leaned forward placing his hands on my desk before giving me a deadly look.
"What's going on between you and Hazel?" he asked. I gave him a blank stare.
"What sort of question is that?" I mean what right has he to ask such a personal question? The last time I checked we were anything but friends.
"Just answer the fucking question Castello, it's not rocket science, is it?" He knew very well that I dislike when people talk to me like that. So either he was trying to be funny or was just trying to get on my nerves. I reclined on my chair staring straight into his eyes.
"Why do you think I will answer that question? This isn't some fucking teenage high school drama and at least you forget you are in my office, in my home." I reminded him trying my best to stay calm.
"That's more reason why you shouldn't keep her in the dark any longer," he fumed slamming his hands on my desk.
"You haven't told her who we are and what kind of job we do, have you?" He asked in a low voice. When I didn't reply he stood up pushing back his seat which crashed on the wall behind him.
"This isn't some joke Castello, you keep dragging her into your fucking mess without her permission, knowing fully well that she can get hurt." He paced, sounding worried in front of me.
"And how's that any of your business?" I asked sitting up. "Why does it matter to you if she gets hurt or not? She is not your girlfriend or in any way related to you." I started angrily. He was saying the truth but I needed to know why he cares for Hazel and isn't even afraid to show it to me.
"You are so full of yourself, why do you always have to make everything about you?" He hissed. "You just don't get it to do you?"
"What's your problem?" I put in immediately, he wasn't one to involve himself in other people's business especially when it comes to women.
"My problem here is that I don't want a fucking repeat of last time, don't you fucking get it? Or are you still the same dumb fuck you've always been?" he was starting to get on my nerves and worth his outburst but I chose to ignore them for now. I didn't like being addressed as dumb.
"Get what? And what happened last time?" I inquired, cocking my head up with a curious glance.
He scoffed looking down at me from where he stood. He raked his fingers through his hair, breathing out frustratedly.
"You think your mom just woke up one morning and decided to leave you without any good reason?" He questioned leaning down with a hand on my desk.
"What do mean?" I asked hissing at him. I could barely grasp the point he was trying to make. And if he was trying to bring up some fucking explanation as an excuse for her leaving then he should know I wouldn't fall for it.
"Your mom..." he paused before continuing. "Our moms didn't leave us willing, Someone played a part in their disappearance." He remarked trying to sound as convincing as possible.
"In case you don't recall, my mom left me. She walked out of the door without looking back at her little son who was crying out to her. No one kidnapped her or held her at gunpoint Markov. She fucking left on her own will." I reminded him fuming angrily. I know exactly what happened that day, she abandoned me.
"That's what they want us to believe," he replied, stepping forward before letting out a groan.
