Be my date ii

“Hey bro I miss you”

“What kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into?” Brock asked his brother with a frown etched upon his face.

Brock knew his brother very well, they used to be so close when they were young, playing games which their mother termed dangerous. During one of the school breaks they had gone over to spend some time with their cousins, Matt and Lucy.

On one of the sunny days with nothing else to do and feeling really bored Daniella suggested that they play a racing game with their bikes. Daniella had suggested that us boys should ride on our bikes and chase them girls around the estate.

The idea was a welcome distraction to children that had nothing better to do. We brought out our bikes and the girls got in position and so the game of cat and mouse began. Laughter filled the air as the girls laughed and our adrenaline pumped us to push harder in our chase.

All was fun and game until Lucy crashed into a pole that supplied light to the estate and to make it worse, the pole had fallen and we were scared out of our pants as it narrowly missed falling on Lucy. She was lucky to have gotten out of that situation unhurt.

That was the good old days before….

“Are you even listening to me?” Daniel’s voice had broken Brock’s train of thoughts

“Sorry, so what were you saying?

“I had gone for a drive around town and my car died along the way so… I decided to hang out a bit at this diner until the car was repaired, but I was caught up in an argument which later turned into a fight and now we’re at the police station.” Daniel said in a low tone.

He knew his brother will not be happy with this news but he had no one else to call except he calls the palace and risk letting his parents and possibly the whole country find out he was involved in a street fight.

“What? How stupid can you get Daniel, do you know what will happen if the press gets hold of this story? Prince Daniel Zaza embroiled in police fiasco with your picture in cuffs plastered all over tomorrow’s papers and all the news media having a field day with your story” Brock said as he felt a mild explosion of pain on his forehead.

Today had been one heck of a day and all he wanted to do after this dinner date with Rose was to go home and duck himself under the bed cover and just sleep the night away, but seems like fate had other ideas for him.

“I’m feeling bad already, please don’t add to it” Daniel pleaded.

“Send me the address of the station and just be calm okay”

“Thank you bro, that’s why… what a jerk, he could’ve let me finish before hanging up on me Daniel said while looking at the cell phone which he borrowed from an officer.

Daniel signed in relief at the fact that Brock was on his way to settle the matter.

It was never his intention to meddle in other people’s business but the owner of the diner was so rude and had this explosive tongue that could literally send one to the depths of hell.

Daniel could see that the young brunette whose fist were clenched and lips tightened was just about to explode especially when the owner of the diner mentioned something about her dad being a useless father who was on the brick of bankruptcy.

That was the straw that broke the camels’ back. The young lady charged at the short woman and had pounced on her with a pile of dirty napkins in her hands, throwing one dirty napkin after another while chasing the owner around the diner.

The poor woman was terrified she had bitten more than she could chew and honestly although she did deserve what she was getting Daniel knew that the matter could escalate if the owner decided to file charges, so he stepped in to intervene like a true prince charming.

“I’m sorry for roping you into this situation, it was never my intention?”

“I couldn’t stand there and watch you murder the woman with your sharp tongue and a dirty napkin as a weapon” Daniel smiled smugly.

“She had it coming, you don’t mess with me and expect me to cuddle you” the lady whose name Daniel did not yet know said.

“By the way I’m Mia and am super grateful for stepping in to save me but I can handle it” she said with pride.

“I’m Daniel and let me tell you, pride won’t be getting us out of here.
The police officers had instructed to apologize to the woman and also pay for any damages caused during the incident. But Mia refused to apologize to that mean witch.

“What an unusual way to meet… in a cell! Daniel chuckled while Mia signed in regret.

“If I had better control of my temper, this wouldn’t have happened Mia suddenly burst out in tears which shocked Daniel because a while ago she was full of life and zest what changed?

Daniel could see his own sister in her personality which was why it was hard for him to ignore when she was in trouble. Daniella had a short temper and was always trying to act tough but she had the softest heart and a very good sense of humor. Daniel signed, today had been a pretty long day.

He had decided to go for a drive and clear his head, sometimes you just can’t understand yourself. One minute you are happy and looking forward to the future and the next minute you just want to hide in the solemnness of the dark, the bright skies which was exiting just moments ago becomes a nightmare and you see nothing but gloominess.

Nothing seems exciting anymore and life just becomes boring, a recycle of daily happenings except there is no joy. Daniel understood what it meant to be helpless in the face of opposition.

He gently wrapped his arms around Mia and held her, allowing her to cry to her heart’s content until her sobs became began to fade away like a raindrop.

“Omg, that was so embarrassing” Mia said as she recollected herself and used her apron to wipe away any trace of tears on her face.

“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about, we all have those moments where the darkness we have kept hidden at the depth of our hearts comes crumbling down on us. It’s better to cry and let it all out, will make you feel better and have clarity of mind” Daniel said.

“Thank you Daniel, I owe you one” Mia smiled as she truly felt light hearted after crying her heart out in a cell of all places.

“Jess must be worried about her already, she didn’t want to add to her burdens because she has been through a lot”

Meanwhile Jess was on her way home after the doctor’s appointment when she met Pete.
“Jess is a good thing I met you” he said out of breath as if he was being chased by some goons.

“What happened Mr. Pete, why are you in such a haste? Jess had asked

“There was a fight at the café, both my wife and your sister are at the station. I’m….

“Why… what happened… which police station? Jess asked all at once.

Pete explained the little he heard from Isabella to Jess. He was not at the diner when the fight happened, otherwise he would not have let it got to this point.

Jess quickly hailed down a cab and give him the address of the police station. It was when she arrived at her destination she realized that she left her purse at the counter when she went to make deposit for her father’s medical bill.

She was in a state of confusion.

“My money” the driver asked as he turned off his ignition and stepped out of the car with Jess. He could see the look on her face and suspected that she wanted to scam him of his money.

“Sir, please I forgot my purse, let me quickly call somebody to transfer the money to your account please”

“You think me for a fool? I’m going to teach you a very bitter lesson” He grabbed her by the elbow and started dragging her to the station to report that she was a thief.

“Sir, please believe me I’ll transfer the money to you…

“Shut up” the driver shouted and continued to drag her

“Let her go” a baritone voice said

They both turned to look at the person who owned the voice and Jess was shocked to find his boss in a three piece suit and a bow tie coming towards them.

Brock’s pov

Brock called Fred who was his childhood friend and a lawyer. He told him the situation which his brother had gotten himself entangled with and begged him to sort out the issue without the press getting wind of the incident. He had a knack for making a story go away without a single trace. He had played an essential part in keeping his identity hidden away all this years.

“Brock Richard Zaza, what will I get in return for this favour hmm?” Fred asked smudgy not willing to offer his services for nothing.

“What do you want in exchange for your help” Brock smirked. Fred wanted to play a game of chess with him, well two can play he thought to himself.

“For starters, I want you to acknowledge my skills as a genius lawyer and accept the fact that I’ll always be better than you when it comes to administration. Fred said knowing that it will be a cold day in hell before Brock will ever admit that Fred was superior to him in administration and business.

“Haha haha…! You know what? I agree to your condition” Brock said as he suddenly felt lighter after the stress of the day.

Fred really had a way to make him drop his façade and just laugh. Yeah he had that ability since they were children he was the only one who knew his moods and how to handle them.

“Really?” Fred asked surprised

“Of course, if only you can tell Louis that you are in love with her by tomorrow morning” Brock said smiling.

Although Fred was an intelligent young computer wizard, he could not match Brock when it came to mind games, not at all. Brock was a master in this area and no one could contest that.

There was silence for a while before Fred said resignedly “I’ll be there in thirty minutes”

“I thought so” Brock said as he hung up the phone and put his head on the back of his seat trying to catch some rest before Fred arrived.

He had closed his eyes and was humming a tone he picked up some years ago in the military but couldn’t remember the song title or the singer when his ear picked up on an argument. He initially ignored it but the voice sounded familiar. Against his better judgement he rolled down the windscreen of his car and popped his head through the window to be able to see what was going on.

“Jess, what is she doing at the police station?” He muttered to himself.
Brock’s eyes darkened and his brows furrowed which formed three vertical wrinkles. His jet like pimples were like those of a crouching beast, one that was staring at the man in black jeans and blue shirt dragging Jess by the forearms forcefully towards the front of the police station.

Jess still dressed in her work clothes was struggling to get out of his hold, her hair messy and her voice strained from begging the man to let her go but the man would not budge.

“Let her go or I’ll break those hand of yours”. He said menacingly.

“Who the hell are you? You better stay out of this unless you want to pay for her t-fare which she wants to fleece me of” he said with a scowl on his face.

His gaze left the man’s face and moved onto Jess’ face, he could see the look of shame on her face and the tiny drops of tears which escaped from her eyes down to her face. He wanted nothing more than to hug her and kiss away her tears

“How much is your bill? He asked bringing out his purse wanting the damn driver to let go of her forearm before he lost his mind.

“100 shillings” he said while stretching forth his hand to collect the money from me.

“Here is your bill, now get lost before you end up being locked up for assault” Brock said while looking at him in the eye.

The coward took his bill and dashed towards his cab leaving a trail of smoke behind as he drove away.

“Are you alright?” He asked wanting to know if she was hurt

“I’m alright sir…hiccup, thank you very much…hiccup for coming to my rescue” she said as she tried to wipe the tears from her face. She seemed embarrassed to be caught between the rock and a hard place.

“It was my absolute duty you don’t have to thank me… I must admit though, you look cute with your messy hair. It’s such a contrast to the bold girl asking me for an advance in order to help me evade the press conference.
“Haha… I’m…” her mouth hung open but no words came out of her mouth.

“Now that’s better, your smile is like an angel and a light that lights up the world… you should smile more often” Brock said with a smile on his face. He loved seeing her smile and laugh. He relished the feeling that he could at least bring a smile to her face.

“By the way, what are you doing here” Brock said gesturing with his hand.

Jess inhaled and exhaled a chuck of air that seems to have been blocking her arteries.

“Actually….”

“You mean your sister was arrested because she had a fight with her boss?

“Yes sir” she nodded her head in the affirmative.

“Hmm” Daniel said soaking in what Jess had just told him

“What about you sir?” Jess had summoned the courage to ask him.

She was conscious of her appearance which looked disheveled, she could spot one of her shoes in the distant. It must have fallen off her feet as she was being dragged by the taxi driver.

Brock noticed too because he followed the trail of her eyes and turned to look in the direction she was gazing on, he spotted the shoe and without a second thought went to retrieve it.

He bent down to her knee level shoe in hand, gently lifted her foot as he safely secured the shoe back to her left foot. Jess’ face was flushed with embarrassment. Suddenly the bracelet on her ankle became the most interesting thing as she tried nervously but failing to calm the volcano threatening to erupt in her heart.

It can’t be. No! I’m sure it’s just my imagination playing a trick on me. There’s no way I’m falling in love with my boss she shook her head vigorously trying to chase the damn thought out of her head but it was as if her heart had a mind of its own. It refused to obey her.

“Are you okay?” Brock asked when he noticed her distant look and the way she was shaking her head vigorously, perhaps the stress from knowing her sister was in police detention had taken a toll on her.
Jess snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him wide eyed, she quickly gave a little distance between them as if his very touch was coal to her skin.

“Yes sir, I’m fine” she mumbled too quickly wanting to get away before her body betrays her.

Brock looked at her strange and thought little of her behaviour, he just thought she was simply stressed out.

“I’ve to go sir” she turned her back to him and made a dash towards the police station which was just a few feet away from them. But before she could go far, a strong hand held her and pulled her back to him. She lost her balance and fell forward towards him landing on his broad chest.

“Thump thump”

She could hear his heart beating loudly in his chest and for a strange reason it calmed her greatly. They both looked up at each other and Jess was lost in those same eyes that enchanted her at their first meet when she came for the final evaluation.

Jess ran her hand across his sharp jawline against her better judgement. She just wanted to savor in the feeling of the moment, she knew that she might regret it later but she had never felt anything like this in her entire life. This strong pull to someone you just met, it felt strange yet not strange at the same time.

I really need to schedule a meeting with one of the therapist because I’m sure going crazy doing strange things that I’ve never done before she thought.

The next thing Jess knew was lips kissing her and she kissing back, at first it was gentle then it became more intense, more passionate, hands running all over her body and going lower, lower. She was lost in the kiss until she was almost out of breathe before Brock pulled away.
