A face from the past

Even though Morgan tried to play it off, she could feel the weight of Sophie’s gaze on her as the door clicked shut behind Alex. The young omega’s wide eyes were locked on her, and Morgan couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being judged, not just for her new role but for her muttered insult as well.

Had Sophie heard her? Was she offended on Alex’s behalf? The silence between them stretched, and the longer Sophie stared, the more uncomfortable Morgan became.

Finally, unable to take it any longer, Morgan cleared her throat. “Is something the matter, Sophie?” she asked, her voice more hesitant than she intended.

Pinching her lips together, Sophie blinked rapidly, as if coming out of a daze. Her cheeks flushed a light pink, and she quickly shook her head. “No, Luna, it’s nothing… I just… I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stare,” she stammered, her voice soft with a hint of nervousness.

A bit stunned, Morgan tilted her head, studying Sophie curiously. “Then why were you?”

Darting her gaze from her, Sophie looked down, her hands fidgeting with the edge of the notepad she held. “It’s just… I’m amazed to finally be in the presence of my Alpha.”

As Morgan brow raised, her confusion deepened. “Your Alpha?” she repeated, not quite understanding. “I thought you were part of the Moonblood Pack.”

Hesitantly, Sophie glanced up, her expression softening into sadness. “I am now, but I wasn’t always. I was born into the Silver Claw Pack.” Her voice dropped to a near whisper, as if speaking the name aloud might summon something dark.

As the realization settled in, Morgan’s breath caught in her throat. The Silver Claw Pack—her pack. The memories of that time were like shadows in her mind, haunting and filled with regret.

With a shaky smile, Sophie continued, her eyes focused on the floor. “When I was a child, during the war between the Silver Claw Pack and the Moonblood Pack, my parents were caught in the fight… they didn’t make it.” Her voice wavered slightly, but she quickly regained her composure. “I was taken in as a maid by the Moonblood Pack, just a kid then, doing whatever I could to survive.”

Darting her gaze to the ceiling as she blink back tears, Morgan felt a sharp pang of guilt. This was one of the many stories of loss that haunted her pack, the casualties of battles fought for reasons that seemed so distant now.

After a brief pause, Sophie continued, her tone growing steadier. “But when Alpha Alex took over, he saw something in me—hard work, maybe, or just determination not to be defined by my past. He promoted me, and now I work here, helping to run things for the pack.”

For a silent second, Morgan swallowed hard, drying her eyes as the weight of her past bearing down on her.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t strong enough to protect you or your family. I failed as a leader.”

When their gazes met, Sophie’s eyes widened in surprise, and she quickly shook her head. “No, Luna, please don’t say that. It was during her parents leadership before their death...” she said earnestly. “Even so, you didn’t fail me. In fact, I respect you more than you know. You made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of peace, to end the war between our packs. You agreed to be Alex’s Luna, even though it meant giving up everything you knew. That’s not weakness, that’s strength.”

Speechless, Morgan stared at Sophie, taken aback by the sincerity in her words. The guilt she’d been carrying, the shame of her past failures, seemed to lift just a little in the face of Sophie’s unwavering belief in her. It was strange, to hear words of respect and admiration from someone who had every right to resent her. But there it was, in Sophie’s eyes—a glimmer of hope, of something new and better that might come from this strange, twisted alliance.

As Morgan eyes softened at her, Sophie beamed, and for the first time since walking into Lupine Industries, Morgan felt a small flicker of hope in her chest. Maybe, just maybe, she could do this. Not just for herself, but for people like Sophie, who believed in her even when she didn’t believe in herself.

“Thank you,” Morgan said softly, a small, genuine smile tugging at her lips. “Your words mean more to me than you know.”

Feeling her cheeks grow hot, Sophie’s smile widened, and she dipped her head respectfully. “Anything for you, my Luna. I’ll do my best to support you in whatever you need.”

Calmly, Morgan nodded, feeling a bit more sure of herself. “Let’s get that meeting with the board scheduled, then,” she said, her voice steady. “It’s time I start making decisions that matter.”

“Of course, my Luna. I’ll take care of it right away. Please, make yourself comfortable. I’ll come get you as soon as everything is ready.” Sophie nodded, her beaming smile still bright. With that, she gave a respectful bow and quickly left the room, her footsteps light and purposeful.

As the door closed behind Sophie, Morgan exhaled a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. She glanced around the office, taking in the sleek, modern design that was so different from anything she was used to. The walls were lined with tall bookshelves, filled with volumes she doubted Alex had ever read, and the large windows offered a sweeping view of the city below. Everything about the room screamed power and control, two things she was still trying to grasp in this new life.

“Comfortable,” she muttered to herself, half-amused.

Standing in Alex’s office didn’t exactly put her at ease. It was like trying to fit into a role that was never meant for her. She wandered over to the desk, her fingers lightly brushing over the smooth surface. It was impeccably clean, not a paper out of place. Typical Alex, always in control, always a step ahead. She could practically see him sitting here, commanding the room with that air of authority he wore so well.

With a sigh, she sat down in the chair behind the desk, feeling the weight of the position settle on her shoulders again. She leaned back, letting her head rest against the chair. Maybe it was time to stop thinking of this as Alex’s office and start thinking of it as hers.
