Trust issues

As Morgan stared at the determined faces of the elders, she could feel the weight of their words pressing down on her. She knew this conversation was far more dangerous than it seemed, and she had to approach it carefully. Her pack’s well-being depended on it.

Taking a deep breath, she leveled her gaze at Elder Thomas. “Before we go any further, I need to ask something. Why didn’t you come to the Blood Moon pack house to…rescue me?” The room grew silent, the question hanging heavily in the air. The elders exchanged uneasy glances, but no one spoke up immediately.

“I’m not angry,” she assured them, seeing the tension in their faces. “In fact, I think you made the right move to stand down and wait. Acting impulsively could have brought us straight into a war, and I refuse to spill any more blood over this.”

After a moment of hesitation, Elder Miriam finally broke the silence, her voice cautious. “Luna, it wasn’t out of fear of Alex that we didn’t intervene. It was out of respect for your decision. We knew you were handling things in your own way, and we didn’t want to undermine that.”

The others mumbled in agreement, and then Elder Thomas nodded, his expression somber. “When Beta Marcus came back and assured us you were fine, we couldn’t just take his word for it. We demanded to speak with you directly because we wanted to hear it from you.”

A faint smile pulled at her lips, and Morgan felt a small surge of relief at their words. They had hesitated not because they doubted her, but because they trusted her. Yet, she knew she couldn’t let them continue to worry about the situation.

“I appreciate your faith in me,” Morgan said, her voice softening. “But I want you to know that I have everything under control.”

The elders leaned in, their attention fully on her. “How do you intend to control this situation?” Elder Miriam asked, her tone both curious and concerned.

Hesitantly, Morgan sighed, feeling the gravity of what she was about to reveal. “Alex and I have decided to produce an heir. A child who will carry both the Silver Claw Pack blood and the Blood Moon Pack blood. This child will unite our packs and secure peace.”

The room erupted into shocked murmurs. The elders exchanged bewildered looks, clearly trying to process what she had just said.

After a long pause, Elder Thomas was the first to find his voice, though it was tinged with disbelief. “And you believe that this will guarantee Alex won’t get moody one day and decide to attack our pack?”

For a moment, Morgan studied the concern on their faces, and then her eyes flashed with a hint of frustration. “It wasn’t my idea,” she admitted. “It was the elders from the Blood Moon Pack who proposed it. They see an heir as the key to peace between us. And if Alex is committed to this, then it means he’s willing to work towards that peace.”

“But what if…” Elder Miriam hesitated, choosing her words carefully. “What if you cannot produce an heir or something happen?”

A feeling of worry struck Morgan’s heart, but she forced her lips into a teasing smile to mask her fear and said, “Are you implying that I’m barren, Elder Miriam?”

The elder’s eyes widened in horror, and she quickly shook her head. “No, Luna, that’s not what I meant—”

“I’m just teasing,” Morgan cut in, her smile turning reassuring. “But I understand your concern. This is a risk, I won’t deny that. But I believe it’s a risk worth taking. We have a chance to secure lasting peace, to unite our packs in a way that hasn’t been done before.”

The elders fell silent, contemplating her words. Finally, Elder Thomas spoke again, his voice steadier. “We trust you, Luna. And if this is the path you’ve chosen, then we’ll support you, as we always have.”

With a small nod, Morgan smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. “Thank you. I need you all to be strong, to continue guiding the pack while I…navigate this new challenge.”

“We will,” Elder Miriam assured her, her earlier sharpness now replaced with warmth. “But remember, Luna, we’re here for you. You don’t have to do this alone.”

“I know,” Morgan said, her voice soft. “And that’s why I’m confident we’ll get through this. Together.”

The tension that had gripped the room was slowly beginning to ease, and Morgan said with a soft smile, trying to lighten the mood. “Well, I think that’s enough heavy conversation for now... I should go and greet the rest of the pack. Also, I want to check on how things are around the community.”

Elder Miriam nodded, her expression softening again. “Of course, Luna. The pack will be overjoyed to see you.”

“Take your time, Luna. We’ll be here if you need us.” Elder Thomas added.

With a faint smile, Morgan excused herself, walking out of the council chamber and into the familiar halls of the pack house, and the moment the door closed behind her, the elders’ expressions grew serious once more.

Scowling, Elder Miriam sighed, her earlier warmth gone. “She’s right, you know. Even though we have peace now, there’s still a risk. Alex may be cooperating for the moment, but that doesn’t mean we can trust him.”

As Elder Thomas leaned forward, his face set in a hard line. “Exactly. We can’t afford to be complacent. He’s already shown that he’s willing to challenge Luna Morgan’s authority. Who’s to say he won’t do it again?”

The other elders murmured their agreement, their faces grim.

“Luna Morgan is our leader, and we respect her judgment,” Elder Thomas continued his voice firm. “But we also have a duty to protect this pack. We’ll enjoy this peace for as long as it lasts, but we need to be ready for war. We refuse to trust Alex after the way he disrespected us.”

Elder Miriam nodded, her gaze steely. “We’ll strengthen our defenses, double the training for our warriors. And we’ll do it quietly. We can’t let the Blood Moon Pack catch wind of this. If they think we’re preparing for war, they might strike first.”

“Let’s keep this between us for now. We’ll inform the other leaders as needed, but the pack doesn’t need to know the full extent of our preparations. We need to be ready, but we don’t want to cause unnecessary fear.” Elder Thomas agreed as his eyes hardened.
