Chapter 15: Progress and Tension
Luna's POV:
The morning sun beat down on the training grounds as I faced off against my sparring partner, a wolf named Derek. We circled each other, eyes locked, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Derek lunged first, but I was ready. Using a move Kira had taught me, I sidestepped his attack, grabbing his arm and using his momentum to flip him over my shoulder. He hit the ground with a satisfying thud.
"Well done, Luna!" Kira's voice rang out across the field. "That's exactly how it's done."
Pride swelled in my chest as I helped Derek to his feet. After weeks of grueling training, I was finally seeing real progress. I might be unable to shift, but I held my own against born wolves.
As we took a water break, I caught sight of Ash watching from the sidelines. Our eyes met, and I felt a familiar flutter in my stomach. Since that night he'd comforted me after my nightmare, things between us had been... different. There was a new understanding, a more profound connection that thrilled and terrified me.
Ash gave me a slight nod of approval before turning away, and I tried to ignore the pang of disappointment at his continued distance.
After training, I met up with Rowan in the library. Her eyes were bright with excitement as she spread out several old documents on the table.
"Luna, look at this," she said, pointing to a faded map. "I think I've found something about the origin of the prophecy."
I leaned in, studying the intricate drawings. "What am I looking at?"
"It's an ancient gathering place," Rowan explained. "According to these records, the first alliance between packs was formed. And look here..." She pointed to a series of symbols around the edge of the map. "These represent different pack bloodlines. Including yours and Ash's."
My heart raced as I absorbed this information. "So, the prophecy..."
"Might have originated there, yes," Rowan finished. "Luna, I think this place could hold answers about your destiny, about why you're so important to the future of all packs."
As exciting as this discovery was, I couldn't help but feel a weight settling on my shoulders. The more we uncovered about the prophecy, the more accurate it became. And the more I wondered if I was indeed up to the task.
Ash's POV:
From my vantage point on the sidelines, I watched Luna spar with Derek. Her movements were fluid and confident, a far cry from the uncertain girl who had first arrived at our pack.
Pride swelled in my chest as I watched her execute a perfect throw. She was progressing faster than anyone had anticipated, showing a natural talent for combat that belied her inability to shift.
Our eyes met across the field, and I felt that now-familiar pull towards her. The night we'd spent talking after her nightmare had changed something between us. The walls I'd so carefully constructed were crumbling, and maintaining my distance was becoming harder and harder.
But I had to. The curse... No matter how much I longed to be closer to her, I couldn't risk her safety.
Later that afternoon, Kira approached me with a suggestion that made my heart race.
"I think it's time Luna sparred with you," she said. "She needs to learn how to face a more powerful opponent."
I knew Kira was right, but the thought of being in such close physical proximity to Luna filled me with both anticipation and dread.
As Luna and I faced each other on the training mat, I could feel the tension crackling between us. Her scent enveloped me, stirring feelings I'd been trying to suppress.
"Ready?" I asked, my voice huskier than I intended.
Luna nodded, her eyes never leaving mine as we began to circle each other.
Luna's POV:
My heart pounded as Ash and I circled each other on the training mat. This was the closest we'd been since that night, and every nerve in my body seemed hyper-aware of his presence.
Ash struck first, his movement almost too fast for me to follow. But somehow, I managed to block, countering with my own move. He evaded easily, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Good," he murmured. "But you're telegraphing your moves. Try to be less predictable."
We continued to spar, our bodies moving in a dance of attack and defense. I felt something awakening inside me with each touch, each near miss. The mate bond, usually quiet in the back of my mind, roared to life.
Judging by the intensity in Ash's eyes, he felt it too. Our movements became more fluid, more in sync, as if our bodies were communicating on a level beyond conscious thought.
Then, in a move I didn't quite follow, Ash swept my legs out from under me. I hit the mat hard; the breath knocked out of me. In an instant, Ash was there, pinning me down, his face inches from mine.
Time seemed to stand still. I was acutely aware of every point of contact between us, of the heat of his body, and of his scent surrounding me. Our eyes locked, and I saw a storm of emotions swirling in his gaze—desire, fear, and longing.
For a breathless moment, I thought he might kiss me. I wanted him to, with an intensity that shocked me.
But then, as quickly as it had happened, the moment passed. Ash jumped back as if burned, his expression closing off.
"That's... that's enough for today," he said, his voice rough. He turned and strode away without another word, leaving me confused and aching on the mat.
Ash's POV:
I ran from the training grounds, my heart pounding, my body on fire. What had I been thinking, agreeing to spar with Luna?
The moment I'd pinned her to the mat, feeling her body beneath mine, inhaling her intoxicating scent... it had taken every ounce of willpower I possessed not to close that final distance between us, to claim her lips with mine.
The mate bond had surged between us, more vital than ever before. It felt perfect as if everything in the universe had aligned for that moment.
And that's precisely why it was so dangerous.
I went to a secluded spot in the woods, trying to calm my racing thoughts. The curse pulsed within me, a dark reminder of why I couldn't allow myself to get close to Luna.
But oh, how I wanted to. The memory of her beneath me, her eyes wide with desire and trust, haunted me. I tried to protect, cherish, and love her in every way possible.
But loving me would only bring her pain. The curse ensured that.
As the sun set, I returned to the pack house, my emotions in turmoil. I knew I needed to maintain my distance from Luna for her own safety, but after today, I wasn't sure I had the strength to do so.
Luna's POV:
As I lay in bed that night, I replayed the sparring session with Ash repeatedly in my mind. The way we had moved together, the electricity between us, the moment I thought he might kiss me...
And then his abrupt departure left me confused and hurt.
I understood that complications and obstacles kept Ash from fully embracing our mate bond. But at that moment on the training mat, I felt the full force of our connection, and I knew, without a doubt, that Ash had felt it, too.
So why did he keep running away?
As I drifted to sleep, my dreams were filled with stormy grey eyes and the phantom touch of hands that ignited and soothed. Whatever was holding Ash back, whatever this curse was that he refused to explain, I made a silent vow to myself.
I would find a way to break through his defenses. Because what I had felt today... It was too robust and too suitable to ignore.
Little did I know, across the pack house, Ash was lying awake, wrestling with the same thoughts, the same longing, and the same fear of what our growing connection might mean for both of us.
