Chapter 32: Curse and Consequences
Luna's POV
The pack house was a flurry of activity as wolves rushed to prepare for Pack A's impending arrival. But amidst the chaos, my mind was a tempest, replaying Ash's revelation about his curse over and over again.
I mechanically strapped on my armor, the weight of it nothing compared to the heaviness in my heart. Ash, my mate, cursed to feel pain at emotional closeness. The universe's cruelest joke indeed.
"Luna!" Rowan's voice snapped me out of my reverie. "War council in five. You coming?"
I nodded, squaring my shoulders. There would be time to process later. Right now, the pack needed me.
As I entered the strategy room, my eyes immediately found Ash. He stood tall and commanding at the head of the table, every inch the Alpha. But I could see the strain around his eyes, the tightness in his jaw. He was in pain, and it killed me that I couldn't comfort him.
Our gazes locked for a moment, and I felt the familiar pull of the mate bond. But now, knowing what I did, I could sense something else too – a dark undercurrent of agony that made my heart clench.
"Right," Ash began, his voice steady despite everything. "Pack A's forces will be here within the hour. We need to finalize our defense strategy."
As he laid out the plans, I couldn't help but marvel at his strength. Here he was, leading us into battle while carrying the weight of his curse. My admiration for him grew tenfold.
"Luna," Ash said, jolting me from my thoughts. "You'll lead the second defensive line with Kira. Your... unique abilities could give us an edge."
I nodded, a thrill of anticipation running through me. This was my chance to prove myself, to show the pack – and Ash – what I was capable of.
As the meeting progressed, I found myself drawn into the strategic discussions. But a part of my mind kept circling back to the curse. There had to be a way to break it. There had to be.
"Ash," I said as the meeting wound down. "A word?"
He hesitated, pain flashing across his features, but nodded. As the others filed out, I approached him, careful to maintain some distance.
"I need to know more," I said softly. "About the curse. Its origin. Maybe if we understand it better, we can find a way to break it."
Ash sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Luna, I've told you. There is no breaking it. I've tried everything."
"But you haven't tried with me," I countered, feeling a surge of determination. "Please, Ash. Tell me everything."
For a moment, I thought he might refuse. But then his shoulders slumped, and he began to speak.
"It was five years ago," he said, his voice low and haunted. "I was young, arrogant. I thought being the Alpha's son made me invincible. There was a witch living on the outskirts of our territory. I... I treated her poorly, mocked her powers."
I could imagine it – a younger, cockier Ash, drunk on his own importance. The image was so at odds with the man before me now that it made my heart ache.
"She warned me," Ash continued. "Said if I couldn't respect the power of emotions, I'd be doomed to fear them. I laughed it off. And then..."
He trailed off, his eyes distant. I wanted so badly to reach out, to comfort him, but I held myself back.
"The pain started small at first," he said. "A twinge when I hugged my mother. A sharp ache when my best friend confided in me. But it grew. Every emotional connection became agony. I pushed everyone away, became cold, distant. It was the only way to survive."
The raw pain in his voice made tears spring to my eyes. "Oh, Ash," I breathed. "I'm so sorry."
He looked at me then, his gaze intense. "And then you came along," he said softly. "And the mate bond snapped into place, and I felt... everything. Joy, hope, desire. And pain like I've never known."
I couldn't stop myself. I reached out, my fingers brushing his cheek. Ash leaned into the touch for a split second before jerking away with a hiss of pain.
"This is why we can't, Luna," he said, his voice strained. "I can't be what you need. I can't be your mate without destroying myself."
"No," I said firmly, surprising even myself with the strength in my voice. "I don't accept that. We'll find a way, Ash. I promise you, we'll break this curse."
He opened his mouth to argue, but a howl from outside cut him off. Pack A had arrived.
"We need to go," Ash said, his Alpha mask sliding back into place. But I could see the conflict in his eyes, the longing warring with resignation.
As we rushed to take our positions, I made a silent vow. I would find a way to break this curse. I would free Ash from this pain. And then, finally, we could be together as we were meant to be.
The battle that followed was a blur of fur, fangs, and chaos. I found myself at the heart of it, my newfound powers surging through me as I fought off wolf after wolf. But even as I battled, my mind was working, piecing together everything I knew about curses and magic.
There had to be a solution. There had to be.
As the fighting died down, Pack A retreating to regroup, I sought out Ash. I found him on the edge of the battlefield, his fur matted with blood – some his, some not.
Our eyes met, and I felt that familiar pull. Without thinking, I shifted back to human form and approached him. Ash did the same, his eyes wary.
"Are you okay?" I asked, my eyes scanning him for injuries.
He nodded, but I could see the pain etched in every line of his body. And not just physical pain from the battle.
"Ash," I said softly. "I meant what I said. We're going to break this curse. Together."
"Luna, please," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "Don't give me hope. I can't... I can't bear it."
"Tough," I said, feeling a surge of stubbornness. "Because I'm not giving up on us. Curse or no curse, you're my mate. And I'm going to fight for you. For us."
Something flickered in Ash's eyes – a spark of hope, quickly doused by fear. He took a step towards me, his hand reaching out as if of its own accord.
The moment his fingers brushed my cheek, I saw it happen. Ash's face contorted in agony, a pained gasp escaping his lips as he doubled over.
"Ash!" I cried out, instinctively moving to support him. But he held up a hand, keeping me at bay.
"This is why," he ground out, his breathing labored. "This is why we can't, Luna. I can't... I can't do this to you. To us."
Tears streamed down my face as I watched him struggle. The unfairness of it all hit me like a physical blow. How could the universe be so cruel? To give us this connection, this love, and then make it cause such pain?
But as I stood there, watching Ash fight through the agony of our simple touch, something crystallized within me. A determination so fierce it burned away all doubt.
"Listen to me, Ash," I said, my voice low and intense. "I don't care how long it takes. I don't care what I have to do. I will break this curse. I will free you from this pain. And then, when I can finally hold you without hurting you, I'm never letting go. Do you understand me?"
Ash looked up at me, his eyes shining with a mixture of pain and wonder. For a moment, just a moment, I saw a flicker of hope in their depths.
And then, as if the universe itself was laughing at us, another howl split the air. Pack A was regrouping, preparing for another assault.
Ash straightened, his Alpha mask sliding back into place even as he winced from the lingering effects of the curse. "We need to go," he said, his voice rough. "The pack needs us."
I nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility settle on my shoulders. But as we turned to face the oncoming threat, I felt something else too. A fierce, burning determination.
Pack A, the curse, the entire world – let them come. I was Luna Evernight, mate to Alpha Ash Stonehill. And I would move heaven and earth to break this curse and claim the future we deserved.
As we shifted and raced towards the sounds of battle, I made a silent promise. To Ash, to myself, to the very stars above.
This wasn't the end of our story. It was only the beginning.
