Chapter 44: Power Unchained
Luna's POV
The acrid scent of smoke filled my nostrils as I raced through the burning forest. Pack A's surprise attack had caught us off guard, and now our territory was ablaze. Ash's roar echoed in the distance, spurring me on. I had to reach him, had to help.
As I burst into a clearing, the scene before me made my blood run cold. Ash was surrounded, fending off attacks from multiple directions. Even from here, I could see the toll the curse was taking on him. His movements were slower, less precise than usual.
Without thinking, I leapt into the fray. "Ash!" I called out, drawing the attention of several attackers.
His eyes met mine, a mixture of relief and fear flashing across his face. "Luna, get out of here! It's not safe!"
But I was done running, done hiding. As a particularly large wolf lunged at Ash, something inside me snapped. Power surged through my veins, hot and wild and untamed.
I threw out my hand, expecting the usual blast of energy. Instead, the very earth beneath our feet began to tremble. Roots erupted from the ground, wrapping around the attacking wolves and immobilizing them.
Gasps of shock and fear rippled through both packs. Even Ash stared at me, wide-eyed with disbelief.
"Luna," he breathed, "how did you...?"
But there was no time for explanations. More attackers were pouring into the clearing, drawn by the commotion. I could feel my newfound power pulsing just beneath my skin, begging to be unleashed.
As I faced the oncoming wolves, the world around me seemed to slow. I could sense every heartbeat, every flicker of emotion. And somehow, instinctively, I knew how to use it.
I reached out with my mind, touching the consciousness of our attackers. Their fear, their anger, their determination - I could feel it all. And with a thought, I amplified their fear, turning it into blind panic.
Wolves began to flee, their minds overwhelmed by terror they couldn't understand. Those who resisted found their own pack bonds turned against them, confusion and mistrust spreading like wildfire.
In minutes, the clearing was empty save for our pack. I stood there, panting, my whole body thrumming with residual energy. As the adrenaline faded, the enormity of what I'd just done crashed over me.
"Luna?" Ash's voice was cautious as he approached. "Are you okay?"
I turned to face him, and the look in his eyes made my heart clench. There was awe there, yes, but also a flicker of fear. Fear of me.
"I... I don't know," I admitted, my voice shaking. "Ash, what's happening to me?"
Before he could answer, a chorus of howls split the air. Reinforcements from neighboring packs, drawn by the sounds of battle. But as they entered the clearing, their eyes locked onto me with an intensity that made my skin crawl.
"The prophecy," one of them murmured. "It's true. She's the one."
Whispers spread through the crowd, a mixture of reverence and fear. I could feel their emotions pressing against my mind - curiosity, awe, greed. They saw me as a weapon, a tool to be used.
Ash stepped in front of me protectively, his Alpha authority radiating off him in waves. "That's enough," he growled. "This territory is under my protection. Leave. Now."
For a tense moment, I thought they might challenge him. But then, slowly, they began to back away. As they retreated, I caught snippets of their thoughts - plans, schemes, ways to get to me.
Once they were gone, Ash turned to me, his expression a storm of conflicting emotions. "Luna, we need to talk about what just happened. Your powers-"
"I know," I cut him off, still reeling from the intensity of it all. "Ash, I... I don't know if I can control this. It's too much."
He reached out as if to comfort me, then hesitated, remembering the curse. The pain of that small gesture was almost too much to bear.
"We'll figure this out," he said softly. "Together. I promise."
As we made our way back to the pack house, I could feel the weight of everyone's stares. News of my display had spread quickly, and now even my own packmates looked at me with a mixture of awe and unease.
Rowan was waiting for us, her face pale with worry. "Luna, thank the gods you're okay. I heard what happened. We need to talk."
She led us to a private room, her movements jittery with nervous energy. Once the door was closed, she turned to me with grave eyes.
"The prophecy," she said without preamble. "It's happening faster than we thought. Your powers are growing exponentially, and Ash..."
She trailed off, but I could see the truth written in the lines of exhaustion on Ash's face. The curse was draining him, feeding my power at the cost of his life force.
"How long?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Rowan shook her head. "At this rate? Weeks. Maybe a month."
The room spun around me as the gravity of the situation hit home. Weeks. We had weeks to break an unbreakable curse, or I'd lose Ash forever.
"There has to be something we can do," I insisted, desperation clawing at my throat. "Some way to stop this, to control my powers."
"We're working on it," Rowan assured me. "But Luna, you need to be careful. Your abilities are volatile, unpredictable. Until we understand them better, you need to try to keep them in check."
As if to punctuate her point, a surge of frustrated energy pulsed through me. Before I could stop it, a shockwave exploded outward, shattering windows and sending furniture flying.
Rowan cried out in pain as a shard of glass sliced her cheek. Horror washed over me as I realized what I'd done.
"Rowan! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-"
But as I reached out to help her, another pulse of energy knocked her back. She hit the wall with a sickening thud, sliding to the floor unconscious.
"No!" I screamed, my powers spiraling further out of control. The room began to shake, cracks appearing in the walls.
Ash grabbed me, ignoring the obvious pain it caused him. "Luna, look at me," he commanded, his voice cutting through my panic. "Breathe. Focus on my voice. You can control this."
Slowly, agonizingly, I reined in my power. As the chaos subsided, the full weight of what I'd done hit me. I'd hurt Rowan. My best friend. The person who'd stood by me through everything.
"Oh gods," I choked out, tears streaming down my face. "Ash, what have I done?"
He held me close, his own pain forgotten in the face of my distress. "It was an accident," he soothed. "She'll be okay. We'll get through this."
But as I watched others rush in to tend to Rowan, a cold, hard truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a danger to Ash anymore. I was a danger to everyone around me.
In that moment, I made a decision. One that broke my heart even as I knew it was necessary.
I had to leave. For the safety of the pack, for Rowan, for Ash... I had to get as far away from them as possible. At least until I could control these terrifying new abilities.
As Ash turned to speak with the pack doctor, I slipped away. Tears blurred my vision as I ran, heading for the forest's edge. Every step felt like it was tearing me apart, but I forced myself to keep going.
I'm sorry, Ash, I thought, hoping somehow he'd understand. I love you. That's why I have to go.
The trees swallowed me up, hiding me from the life I was leaving behind. Ahead lay uncertainty, danger, and the monumental task of mastering powers I barely understood.
But behind me lay destruction, pain, and the very real possibility of losing everything I loved.
So I ran, my heart breaking with every step, praying that someday, somehow, I'd find my way back home.
