Chapter 21: The Unexpected Shift
Luna’s POV
The morning sun had barely risen when I found myself outside Ash's office, my heart pounding with determination and nervousness. Last night's overheard conversation about the curse had kept me awake, questions swirling in my mind. I couldn't wait any longer for answers.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the door.
"Come in," Ash's voice called out.
I entered, finding him behind his desk, looking like he hadn't slept much either. Our eyes met, and I felt that familiar pull between us, but I steeled myself against it. I needed answers more than I needed the comfort of our connection.
"Luna," Ash said, his voice carefully neutral. "What can I do for you?"
"We need to talk," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "About the curse."
Ash's expression tightened, a flash of something—fear? Pain?—crossing his features before he schooled them back into neutrality.
"What about it?" he asked, his tone guarded.
"I overheard you talking to Elder Mira last night," I admitted. "You said the curse was dangerous and could put me at risk. I deserve to know what's going on, Ash. No more secrets."
Ash stood up abruptly, his hands clenching at his sides. "You shouldn't have been eavesdropping, Luna. There are things you don't understand—"
"Then help me understand!" I interrupted, frustration boiling over. "You can't keep pushing me away and expecting me just to accept it. Not when I know there's something between us, something real."
Ash's eyes flashed with emotion, and for a moment, I thought he might finally open up. But then his expression hardened.
"It doesn't matter what's between us," he said, his voice low and intense. "The curse cannot be overcome with good intentions or strong feelings. It's dangerous, Luna. To both of us."
I took a step closer, refusing to back down. "Let me be the judge of that. Tell me about the curse, Ash. Please."
The tension in the room was palpable, crackling between us like electricity. Ash opened his mouth, seeming on the verge of speaking when suddenly, an alarm blared through the building.
We both tensed, years of training kicking in. "What's going on?" I asked.
"Emergency training drill," Ash replied, already moving towards the door. "We'll have to continue this discussion later."
Frustration surged through me, but I pushed it aside. Pack safety came first, no matter how much I needed answers.
We rushed to the training grounds, where Kira was already organizing the pack into teams. "Surprise attack simulation," she barked out. "Everyone to your positions!"
As we took our places, I was paired against Derek, one of our strongest fighters. Under normal circumstances, I would have been excited for the challenge. But my mind was still reeling from the confrontation with Ash, my emotions raw and conflicted.
"Begin!" Kira shouted, and Derek lunged at me.
I dodged his first attack, countering with a move Kira had taught me. But my focus was only partially on the fight. I could feel Ash's eyes on me from across the field, which was distracting.
Derek took advantage of my distraction, landing a solid hit that sent me stumbling backward. Frustration and anger surged through me—at Derek, at Ash, at this whole situation.
And then, something strange happened.
A wave of heat rushed through my body, unlike anything I'd ever felt. My vision sharpened, and my colors became more vibrant. I could hear the heartbeats of everyone around me and smell their sweat and adrenaline.
I looked down at my hands and gasped. Fur was sprouting along my arms, my nails elongating into claws.
"Luna?" Derek's voice sounded distant, tinged with concern and a hint of fear.
I tried to respond, but all that came out was a low growl. Panic started to set in. What was happening to me?
Suddenly, Ash was there, his eyes wide with shock, and... was that pride?
"Luna, it's okay," he said softly, approaching me slowly with his hands raised. "You're shifting. Just try to stay calm."
Shifting? But that was impossible. I'd never been able to shift before.
The training ground had gone silent, all eyes on me. I could sense their surprise, their curiosity, and in some cases, their fear. It was overwhelming.
I felt my body trying to complete the shift, but something was holding it back. I was caught between two forms, neither fully human nor fully wolf. The sensation was disorienting and slightly painful.
"I... I can't control it," I gasped, my voice rougher than usual.
Ash stepped closer, his presence somehow both calming and electrifying. "Focus on my voice, Luna. Try to regulate your breathing. The shift is controlled by emotion. You need to find your center."
I closed my eyes, trying to follow his instructions. But the new sensations were so intense, so foreign. I could smell Ash's unique scent—pine and earth and something uniquely him. I could hear his steady heartbeat, sense the concern and something deeper, more primal, emanating from him.
Slowly, painfully, I felt my body begin to return to its human form. The fur receded, my senses dulling back to their average level. When I opened my eyes, I found Ash kneeling beside me, his hand hovering near mine as if he wanted to touch me but was holding himself back.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice low and filled with concern.
I nodded, still too overwhelmed to speak. Around us, the pack was murmuring, their shock palpable.
Kira pushed through the crowd, her eyes wide but her voice steady. "Alright, the show's over. Everyone is back to training. Luna, take a break. We'll discuss this... development later."
As the others dispersed, Ash helped me to my feet. When his skin touched mine, I felt a jolt of electricity run through me. From how Ash quickly withdrew his hand, I knew he'd thought it, too.
"What... what just happened?" I asked, my voice shaky.
Ash's expression was a mixture of awe and concern. "You shifted, Luna. Partially, at least. It's... unprecedented. I've never seen anything like it."
The implications of what had just happened began to sink in. I had shifted. After years of thinking I was broken and defective, I had shifted. The joy and relief were overwhelming, but so was the fear. What did this mean? Why now? And how was I supposed to control this new ability?
As if reading my thoughts, Ash said, "We'll figure this out together, Luna. I promise."
For a moment, the barriers between us seemed to fall away. I saw the same mix of excitement and fear in Ash's eyes. But then, like a shadow passing over the sun, his expression closed off once again.
"You should rest," he said, his tone becoming more formal. "We'll discuss this more once you've had time to recover."
As Ash walked away, leaving me standing alone on the training field, I felt a whirlwind of emotions. Joy at my newfound ability. Frustration at Ash's continued distance. Fear of the unknown path ahead. And underneath it all, a growing determination.
Whatever this partial shift meant, whatever secrets Ash kept about the curse, I would face them head-on. Because now I knew—I wasn't powerless. I wasn't broken.
I was changing and evolving. And nothing would ever be the same again.
