Chapter 18: Rising Star
Luna's POV:
The forest was eerily quiet as I crouched behind a large oak tree, my heart pounding. This was the final test of our training exercise - a mock mission to retrieve a 'stolen' artifact from enemy territory while evading capture.
I had been training for weeks for this moment, pushing my body and mind to their limits. Now, it was time to put everything I'd learned to the test.
A twig snapped to my left, and I tensed, ready to act. Two of my pack mates, playing the role of enemy wolves, emerged from the underbrush. I held my breath, willing myself to become one with the shadows.
They passed by without noticing me, and I allowed myself a small smile. Kira's lessons on stealth were paying off.
Once they were out of sight, I made my move. Sprinting silently through the trees, I approached the clearing where the 'artifact' - a simple red flag - was being guarded.
Three more pack mates stood guard, their eyes scanning the forest. I analyzed the situation, recalling Ash's lessons on strategy. A frontal assault was out of the question. I needed a distraction.
Picking up a rock, I threw it far to my right. The sound of it crashing through the branches drew the attention of two guards. As they moved to investigate, I saw my opening.
With a burst of speed, I dashed from my hiding spot. The remaining guard spotted me, but I was ready. Using a move Kira had taught me, I feinted left before ducking right, evading his grasp.
My fingers closed around the flag just as shouts erupted behind me. Adrenaline surging, I ran, weaving through the trees with a grace I never knew I possessed.
As I burst through the treeline back into the training grounds, flag clutched triumphantly in my hand; I was met with cheers from fellow trainees. Kira stood at the edge of the field with a rare smile.
"Well done, Luna," she said, her voice approving. "That was impressive work."
Pride swelled in my chest at her words. For the first time since coming to Pack B, I felt like I truly belonged.
As my pack mates congratulated me, slapping me on the back and praising my performance, I caught sight of Ash standing at the edge of the crowd. Our eyes met, and for a moment, I saw a flash of pride in his gaze before his expression returned to its usual neutral mask.
But that brief moment was enough to send a thrill through me. I had impressed Ash. Despite everything - my inability to shift, my outsider status - I had proven myself worthy of his pack.
Later, as I recounted the exercise to Rowan over dinner, I couldn't keep the excitement from my voice.
"Luna, that's amazing!" Rowan exclaimed. "I knew you had it in you."
I smiled but then hesitated, glancing around to ensure we weren't overheard. "There's something else," I said, lowering my voice. "I saw Ash watching the exercise. He looked... proud."
Rowan's eyes widened. "Really? That's huge, Luna. Ash doesn't give praise easily."
I nodded, feeling a warmth spread through me at the memory. "I know. It's just... Rowan, I think my feelings for him are growing stronger."
As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted them. Not because they weren't true, but because I saw a pack member at a nearby table stiffen, their ears catching our conversation.
Rowan noticed, too, her expression turning worried. "Luna..."
But it was too late. The damage was done. I could see the pack member leaning towards their friend, whispering urgently.
I groaned, dropping my head into my hands. "Great. Just great."
Ash's POV:
From my vantage point at the edge of the training grounds, I watched Luna weave through the trees, flag in hand, outmaneuvering wolves with years more experience. Pride swelled in my chest at her accomplishment.
Luna had come so far in such a short time. Her determination, quick thinking, and natural grace were all on full display during the exercise. She, indeed, was something special.
As she emerged victorious from the forest, I saw her joy and the sense of belonging as her pack mates congratulated her. For a moment, our eyes met, and I couldn't help the flash of pride that showed on my face.
But then reality came crashing back. I schooled my features back into neutrality, even as the mate bond hummed between us, urging me to go to her, to share in her triumph.
I couldn't. The curse... the danger... I had to maintain my distance.
As I turned to leave, Kira approached me. "She's progressing faster than anyone expected," she said, nodding towards Luna.
I nodded, keeping my voice neutral. "She's dedicated. It's good to see her integrating with the pack."
Kira gave me a knowing look. "It's more than that, Ash. She has a fire in her. The pack is starting to see it, too."
I knew what Kira was implying. Luna was becoming a force to be reckoned with, a potential leader. It was exactly what we needed for the prophecy to be fulfilled. And precisely what made her an even bigger target.
"Keep pushing her," I said. "She needs to be prepared for what's coming."
As I walked away, my thoughts were a jumble of pride, worry, and a longing I couldn't entirely suppress. Luna was rising to every challenge we set before her. But the most significant challenges were yet to come.
And I feared that the greatest danger to her might not be external threats, but the growing connection between us.
Later that evening, a knock at the door interrupted my thoughts as I was finishing up some paperwork in my office.
"Enter," I called out.
One of the pack's senior members, Elena, came in, her expression troubled. "Alpha, I think there's something you should know."
I raised an eyebrow, gesturing for her to continue.
"There are... rumors circulating," Elena said hesitantly. "About you and Luna."
My heart sank, even as I kept my expression neutral. "What kind of rumors?"
Elena shifted uncomfortably. "Some of the pack members think there might be something... romantic between you two. They're saying she has feelings for you."
I closed my eyes briefly, fighting back a wave of emotion. Of course, there would be rumors. The connection between Luna and me wasn't easy to hide, no matter how hard I tried.
"Thank you for bringing this to my attention, Elena," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me. "I'll handle it."
As Elena left, I leaned back in my chair, my mind racing. These rumors could be dangerous. If word got back to our enemies that Luna and I were growing close, it could put her in even more danger.
But more than that, the idea that Luna might have feelings for me thrilled and terrified me. Because deep down, I knew my feelings for her were growing stronger by the day.
I had to do something. I had to stop these rumors for Luna's safety, and the pack's good, even if it meant pushing her further away.
The thought sent a sharp pain through my chest. But I had no choice. I was the Alpha. I had to protect my pack. Protect Luna.
Even if it meant breaking both our hearts in the process.
Luna's POV:
As I lay in bed that night, my emotions were a whirlwind. The high of my success in the training exercise was tempered by my worry over the conversation I had overheard with Rowan.
I knew how quickly gossip could spread through a pack. Everyone would be talking about my supposed feelings for Ash by morning.
Part of me wanted to deny it, to brush it off as pack rumors. But a more significant part knew it would be a lie. My feelings for Ash were growing stronger every day. His intelligence, leadership, and the rare moments when he let his guard down drew me to him like a moth to a flame.
But there was still so much I didn't understand. What did it all mean? Was the curse he had mentioned the careful distance he maintained?
As I drifted off to sleep, I made a decision. Tomorrow, I would talk to Ash. Clear the air. Understand where we stood.
Little did I know, Ash was making plans of his own. Plans that would test our growing bond in ways neither of us could have anticipated.
