Chapter 17
Sara was carrying a bucket of clean laundry into the living room, while Kylie was lying on the couch sideways watching television munching on her favourite pistachio nuts.
"How was your date yesterday? Did you noticed how everyone were basically asking who you were when you both just entered the ballroom?" Sara finally asked.
"Yeah I noticed the stares, it was so awkward. Even the whole night was quite awkward actually. Most of the time he was attending to his guests, while I sat there alone which he didn't even have the courtesy to apologize. I understand it was his company's big day but there's just something that is insincere about him. I don't know." Kylie responded while switching the television off
"Yeah until Mr hot came to the rescue. I thought you said he didn't remember you." Sara sat beside Kylie on the couch.
"We met again the second time and then he remembered me. He's still an annoying ass.
But did you know that Mark and Mr Smith are not in good terms, at all!" She took another pistachio and placed it in her mouth.
"Yeah, I think it was because of the
New billionaire list jobs and contracts. One time Mr Smith came to our building and stormed into Mr Mark's office. They were arguing so loudly and even the securities were sent up to Mr Mark's office. Thankfully there were no physical fights but soon after the incident, the billionaire list jobs got terminated. Small world, huh? Mr Smith was so pissed and I think the whole staff could feel his wrath for weeks. It was a huge case at that time, I think most people should have heard of it, you didn't know of this?" Sara elaborated and took some pistachios from Kylie
"Nope, I suppose I wasn't paying much attention to the business world ever since I quit. When was that?"
"I think it was about one and a half year ago." She replied continuing to munch on the pistachios. They talked more about last night, laughing and commenting on the events. Soon, Sara got dressed and went out to her date with her boyfriend, while Kylie stayed home enjoying her day off.
A few days later, Kylie was preparing for another event but one of the van was at the workshop under repairmen while the other van was being used to drop off the things for the event. Thus, she took a cab to the location of the event which was a few blocks away from her former office, smithst building. This feels like déjà vu. She thought passing through the familiar buildings as she had been for three years while she was still working at Smith's corporation. She felt a sudden pride on her accomplishment and affirmed the decisions she made some months ago..
..............
" Morning. What are you up to today, Kylie?" Sara yawned whilst taking a seat at the dining table.
"Nothing. Probably just needed to drop by the groceries for a while, then I'm free. What do you want to do today?" Kylie replied plating the pancakes on the plates.
"Let's go shopping. I really need a new wardrobe really." She sighed waiting for the pancakes.
"Aren't you going out with Roland tonight? I thought he's coming back today, isn't he?" She walked carrying the stacks of pancakes, maple syrup and butter to the table.
"Yeah, he'll be landing in the afternoon but he will have to catch up with some more work so he said to just come by tomorrow instead." Taking slabs of pancake and poured generous amount of maple syrup onto the pancake.
"Well then let's go to the mall then. And you're pouring too much syrup on it, Sara" we pulled the syrup bottle away from Sara who shrugged and ate the pancake with syrup soup eagerly. They ate their breakfast and head to the shower to change and got ready.
Sara wore black jeans with satin tank top and high heel boots, while Kylie wore a simple blue sundress just above her knee and a black boots. The weather in New York is unpredictable, it may be Autumn but the weather may be colder as if in winter or hotter as if it was summer. They went to drive using Kylie's van to the mall.
"I don't understand why can't you just buy a normal car like normal people?" Asked Sara.
"Well, I don't need a fancy normal car when I can get a van, it is more spacious and I can use the extra space while catering. It's like hitting two birds with one stone. Moreover, it's only you who usually rides here anyway." Kylie defended.
All the more reason! It's because I am riding here with you." Retorted Sara.
"Oh it's just you. You're my great friend slash sister slash housemate slash confider. Is there such thing as a confider? Anyway, you get what I mean." Kylie wriggled her eyebrows as she stole glances towards her friend.
"Yeah, yeah. Of course I am. Anyway, how's your grandma doing?" Sara asked concernedly.
"She's doing fine, I guess. So far the cancer is still under control, it doesn't grow nor does it affect other organs. She is still going through chemotherapy and still refused to go through the surgery.
The doctor said that the best way to remove the cancer is through thoracotomy and segmentectomy procedure. But I respect and agree with whatever Mamie chooses." Kylie explained while her eyes were focused on the road the whole time as if her mind was elsewhere.
"Let her enjoy her moments, continue with the treatment she has now and let's hope for the best." She tried to ease her friend and held her hands.
They reached the mall, parked the van and walked around the mall hunting for Sara's clothes. They've been walking around for hours until it was time for lunch.
"I need to sit down for a while now." Whined Kylie.
"Alright, let's go to the burger place? No offence, but I need junk food once in a while, Kylie. For my sanity's sake. Come on." Sara dragged Kylie towards Sara's favourite burger restaurant.
"Geez thanks a lot, A! FYI, you do know that we need to keep track of our cholesterol level too right?" She questioned lifting her eyebrow.
"Yeah, yeah. You're a chef not a nutritionist, Kylie. That's a different major." Teased Sara dragging her towards the restaurant. They ordered their food and sat at the edge corner of the restaurant.
"Oh, guess who did I bump into some days ago" Kylie asked.
"Not prince charming from your tone. Who?" She asked and took a bite at her giant burger.
"My ex-boss. And he is still as rude, as arrogant, as annoying and as insolent as he was some months ago. Imagine that!" she snapped.
"Wow! How did you meet him? Does he still remembers you or say anything to you?" Sara took another big bite on her burger and dipped it onto the chilli sauce.
"No. I don't think he remembers me. I was running back to the kitchen and accidentally bumped into him. He even have the nerve to blame me and scold me! As if I am one of his employee. Former employee to you, sir! He was also looking at his phone and not looking where he's going too. Yet he blames me for bumping into him! How annoying is that!" She responded in anger and bit the fries that she was holding onto for the whole speech.
"That's him alright. You knew how he was. Don't get it under your skin, A. He's always been like that. Anyway, does he look hotter than the last time or what?" Sara asked and Kylie's scoffed at her friend.
They ate lunch, went to the groceries and went back home.
