Chapter Fourteen - You remember me?
Freya Rose
Hugging Evan felt good, almost like nothing had happened. I pulled away from him and asked,
“You remember me?”
He pulled his t-shirt down, revealing a tattoo like brand of an angel on his shoulder. I ran my fingers over the slightly raised mark.
“It’s a witches mark. It means I can remember who you are.”
I glanced up into his eyes, tears wetting my own.
“Mason?”
He closed his eyes while releasing a heavy breath through his nose. He shook his head slightly and replied,
“His mark didn’t work. He doesn’t remember you, Freya.” My tears began to slide down my cheeks. “He is interested in your sister,” he said while reaching forward to wipe my tears.
Hearing that Mason was attracted to Amelia broke my heart, but I couldn’t be mad. He didn’t know who I was. I couldn’t be mad at her either. The girl had lost so much in her life, and regardless of my love for Mason, he would be a great partner for her. I sucked up my tears and stopped myself from sobbing into Evans arms.
“I’m sorry, Freya,” he said softly.
“It’s fine, honestly. I didn’t expect him to move on so quickly, but I can’t blame him. And they will be good together. I know he'll love her with all his heart and protect her. I couldn’t ask for a better person for my sister.”
I walked away and headed toward my arm chair. As I picked up the beer bottle from the table, Evan screeched into the air and ascended.
“Kali!” he screamed out, then rushed towards the back doors.
I ascended as quickly as I could and sprinted out of the door after him. Luckily, I was faster than he was and got to Kali first. I stood in front of a cowering Kali and shouted at Evan.
“Evan please calm yourself. She isn’t the person you remember. She isn’t a vampire anymore.”
He froze on the spot and lifted his head to scent the air. With a low hiss he said,
“Well, she’ll be easier to kill then, won’t she.”
He edged forward, and I had no choice but to create a fireball. He glanced down at the electric-filled flaming ball dancing around in my hand and huffed in annoyance.
“We may have a way to fix this…” I began.
I was about to tell him about Lucy and the way she took Kali's vampirism, but I didn’t get a chance as she teleported right next to us, kicking Evan, sending him flying through the air. Kali screamed and fainted, collapsing to the ground. I ran my hand down my face with a groan. I thought we'd all calmed down. I mind linked Savanah who was sitting on the cabin roof.
“Can you take Kali up to my bed please? I think the four of us need to sit down and have a chat.”
“Of course.”
I expected her to fly down to us, but she teleported just like Lucy, making me gasp in shock. I shot her a confused expression, but she just smiled softly at me before picking up Kali.
“I’ll explain in a bit,” she replied in the mind link then vanished with Kali.
I helped a dazed Evan to his feet. He stood up and I thought he was going to say something like ‘what the fuck is that?’ but he didn’t, instead he stood there staring at Lucy like some lovesick puppy. I think I even saw him blush. I’d never seen him blush. Good job Selene wasn’t around to see it. Damn, that’s another conversation I don’t want to have with him, I thought with a sigh as I dragged his goofy ass away and into the cabin.
“Are you coming, Lucy?”
Lucy
I don’t know how long we sat there, bathed in the light of my wings, minds joined. I didn’t try to intrude, only lending my support. It didn’t take long for her shivers to subside, her mind displaying an enormous resilience against the blows she’d been dealt. With mental moves that reminded me of Karate kicks, she methodically took down the rest of the wall she had erected around the memories of her childhood, youth, and adolescence. A sudden smile spread across her face, before she extended her own wings, her light and energy momentarily merging with mine. I knew, she had accessed all of my memories that moment, seen every misstep I had made, every fall I had taken in my short life.
A scream from below made us simultaneously turn our heads. What’s Evan doing here? This could get interesting, Savanah smirked silently.
Freya was standing in front of Kali, shielding her with her body, threatening Evan with a fireball. Was she defending Kali so she wouldn’t get hurt? I wondered, or because she wanted to kill her herself, not wanting the opportunity taken away from her? When Evan started to hiss, I was done with waiting. Flashing myself right in front of the guy, I used my best kick to send him flying through the air.
Pealing laughter sounded inside my head. I guess he didn’t deserve better, Savanah chuckled. Then, Freya was added to the silent communication.
Can you take Kali up to my bed please? Freya enquired. I think the four of us need to sit down and have a chat.
Of course, Savanah replied, flashing to my side to grab Kali, before vanishing again. But not before showing me a clear visual of her destination.
Meanwhile, Freya was helping Evan to his feet. I grinned openly at him, waiting for a second round. I had already planned out my movements to tackle him to the ground for sure, but his attack never came. Instead, he was staring at me. His mouth open, his jaw going slack as he started drooling like a dog – pardon, wolf. At least I assumed, he was one, too. What was wrong with the men in this realm?
They have never seen a True Angel before, and you do look glorious in your attire, Savanah replied.
I did? I had never thought about myself that way.
“Are you coming, Lucy?” Freya prompted me, ushering Evan inside.
With a flash, I joined Savanah and Kali in Freya’s bedroom, waiting for those two to show up the conventional way.
Freya Rose
Evan and I waited downstairs for Savanah and Lucy to finish putting Kali to bed. I used the opportunity to speak to him about Selene. I sat forward and grabbed one of the beers from the table, then took another to offer to Evan. He took it then relaxed on the couch. He stretched his arm across the back of the couch and rested his foot on his leg. I smirked at him. He was trying his best to look cool and calm, but I could hear his heart pounding. He also couldn’t stop glancing up the stairs every time he heard the faintest noise. I cleared my throat when he adjusted the collar of his t-shirt for the fourth time.
“So, Selene?”
His face dropped and all the color left his flushed cheeks. He sat forward and spoke quietly.
“Yeah, about that. Where is she? I came to break it off. We haven’t been the same for months.”
“Well, she double crossed me. Tried to drain two teens of their magic, and then ran off to God knows where. Hasn’t she been in touch?”
“She did send a text from an unknown number. Telling me something about going back to an ex. I wanted to make sure it was fully done between us. Woman is a little too crazy for me.”
I knitted my brow while he glanced up at the stairs impatiently.
“Azael.”
“What!?” Evan asked in shock, attention fully on me now.
“That’s the only ex I know of. She couldn’t possibly mean him? Could she?”
He sat back and took a sip of his beer.
“I damn well hope not. The pair of them back together could really cause some issues.”
I sighed and drank a few gulps of my beer. If that’s what the twins were up to, I’d never be able to forgive them. I mean they knew how hard it would be for me to defeat Azael. If Selene was part of the mix too, helping that son of a bitch, I didn’t know how I'd fare. I was so fed up of this life. Constant threats and dangers. How I wished I could go back to being human, back to my old life. But I couldn’t. The weight and fate of the world rested on my shoulders, and it was only now that I could feel how heavy it was. Losing people and being betrayed was making me bitter, and frankly, it was killing my spirit. I didn’t know if I was strong enough to win this fight, especially when I had hardly any inner strength left.
“You okay, Frey?” Evan asked while squeezing my knee.
I cleared my throat and finished off my beer.
“I need something a little stronger. You?”
“Na, I’m fine with the beer.”
I nodded at him then headed to the kitchen. I got a bottle of whisky out and a glass. Dumping the beer bottle in the trash, I then poured out a whiskey and necked it, before pouring out another. The girls walked down the stairs as I headed back to my arm chair. I smirked when Evan immediately stood up and moved along the couch, pointing down at it to let Lucy know that she could sit there. She gave him a dirty look, then sat on the couch opposite. Savanah and I chuckled and Savanah sat down next to Lucy. Evan looked mortified, I don’t think he'd ever been turned down before, well apart from myself that is. He was trying hard bless him, and it was adorable.
“Can I get you a drink, Lucy?” He asked her enthusiastically.
Lucy
Kali had finally succumbed to exhaustion, slumbering peacefully in Freya’s bed. I had promised I would stay until she woke up again. Following Savanah down the stairs, I felt exceedingly awkward in the ankle-length dress. I wasn’t going to a ball; this was just a chat. I didn’t need to armor myself against Freya anymore, either, I hoped. Pushing my hair back into a ponytail, I tied it with a red rubber band I produced between my fingers. Next, the dress rippled, turning into a one-piece jumpsuit with hot pants and spaghetti straps. Bright red, of course. Much better now.
I groaned silently when Evan jumped up at my sight, gesturing for me to sit next to him on the couch. I had all forgotten about him, and his weird reaction to my appearance. At least, he didn’t start drooling again.
Aww, look at you, sweets. Those legs are to die for, Savanah whispered, our minds still linked.
Annoyed at myself, I placed myself as far away from Evan as possible, realizing too late that I had given him full view of my body doing so. He was still staring at me, now politely asking if he could get me a drink. I didn’t reply, tracing the features of his face with my eyes. His brows knitted together as he watched me watching him, a scowl appearing on his face that made him look as insecure as I felt. He was running a hand along his chin now, scratching his stubbles, the soft sound sending shivers down my spine. Time seemed to stand still as our eyes met, steel-grey looking into almost mint green. The air seemed charged, the hair on my arms standing on end as I pushed myself off the couch, taking a tentative step in his direction. He closed the gap, grabbing my hands. His touch was electric, my breath turning to gasps while I was still staring into his eyes.
Unable to control it, I felt myself reach out with my father’s ability, my energy seeping into him through our clasped hands. The next moment, I had ripped my fingers from his grasp, appalled by my own actions, and shocked about what I had perceived.
“Vamp!” I hissed in disgust, stumbling back until my legs bumped against the couch, my backward motion forcing me to sit down again. Finally, breaking eye contact, I let my shoulders drop, my head hang low. This couldn’t be. I was attracted to a vampire … an extremely handsome vampire at that, but still a vampire. But there was more. Hunter, what seemed to be this realm’s equivalent to a half-Angel, and something else. Raw, unchained energy, pulling at my innards. He might even be able to resist the part of me that wanted to steal some of his energy, bind him to me …
No! That’s not me, I screamed silently.
“Not the ability itself is evil, it’s your choice alone what you will use it for,” my father’s voice echoed in my brain once again. I needed to keep my distance. It was bad enough that I theoretically still could control Kali, because my drop of energy kept her pure, warding off all efforts to turn her into a vampire again. The consequences of calling it back were too great. But doing it for my own gain was not acceptable.
Savanah had stayed silent during my inner struggle, only keeping Evan from coming too close. Now, the slight jar to the couch told me she had seated herself beside me, one arm wrapping around my shoulders.
“Sorry,” I sobbed, shaking my head to clear my thoughts. My throat felt parched. I could definitively use something to drink now...

I watched Evan and Lucy's strange display. It was like witnessing cave people fall in love. It was very odd. At one point I thought they were going to get it on right in front of us. When Lucy pulled herself away and sat back down, she began to sob, and I’d never felt so awkward. I stood up and grabbed hold of Evan’s hand, dragging him into the kitchen. I made myself and Evan a whiskey and poured out a glass of pop for Lucy. Evan couldn’t take his eyes off of Lucy, even when I tapped him with the whisky glass. He took it while still staring at her.
“So, what’s her deal then?” He asked as he rested against the worktop.
“I’m not certain yet. If you could lay off the come to bed eyes for five minutes, we might be able to find out.”
He dragged his eyes away from her and smirked at me. I rolled my eyes when he went straight back to gawking at her.
“She is some kind of angel from what Savanah said. All I know is that she somehow took away Kali's vampirism.”
His head shot around so damn fast, I thought it was going to roll right off of his shoulders.
“She did what? How?”
“I don’t know exactly. That’s one of the questions I was hoping to ask her, but then you unleashed your sexy charms on her, and now she’s sobbing.”
“Hey, well I can’t help if I’m so good looking it makes women sob like they’ve seen God himself.”
“Really? You’re going with that?”
I rolled my eyes at him then picked up my drink and one for Lucy. I pointed at a can of pop on the side and Evan picked it up. I walked back to the armchair and sat down, handing the glass of pop to Savanah, she gave it to Lucy, who had managed to calm down a little. Evan reached over me and gave Savanah her can, before sitting back down on the couch opposite them. Lucy kept glancing up at Evan, so I decided to take her mind off him for a while.
“So, Lucy, how exactly did you take the vampirism from my aunt Kali?”
