23. A Memorable Journey
On the quieting streets of London, Starla and Ha-neul walked slowly. The cool night air enveloped the city, while the streetlights cast a soft yellow glow, creating long shadows on the rain-soaked pavement. The sound of their footsteps was clearly audible amidst the night’s silence, providing a calm rhythm.
“It’s a beautiful night, isn’t it?” Ha-neul said, breaking the silence with his warm voice.
Starla nodded, pulling her scarf tighter around her neck. “Yes, London always has its own charm at night.”
They walked side by side, enjoying the city’s tranquility that seemed to belong to just the two of them. The shops and cafes along the way began to close, but a few still emitted light from within, offering a touch of warmth in the middle of the night.
“Do you often take walks like this?” Starla asked, glancing at Ha-neul curiously.
“Not often, but tonight feels special,” Ha-neul replied with a smile. “I’m glad I can spend this time with you.”
Starla blushed, feeling her cheeks warm. “I’m glad too. Tonight means a lot to me.”
They continued their walk, passing a small park adorned with flowers that remained fresh despite the rain. The scent of wet earth and fragrant leaves made the atmosphere even more magical. Ha-neul glanced at Starla occasionally, a smile never leaving his face.
“Do you miss Seoul?” Ha-neul asked suddenly.
Starla paused for a moment, thinking before answering. “Sometimes, yes. Seoul holds beautiful memories for me. But, London also offers equally beautiful memories.”
Ha-neul nodded in agreement. “Every place has its own story. And I’m glad to be part of your new story here.”
They finally arrived at the spot where Ha-neul had parked his car, a black sedan gleaming under the streetlight. Ha-neul opened the door for Starla politely, letting her in before walking to the driver’s side.
As they sat inside the car, the warmth from the heater quickly enveloped them. Ha-neul started the engine and they began to drive slowly on the empty streets, leaving the now quieter city center.
Inside the car, they had a light conversation, talking about little things that made them laugh. Ha-neul shared his experiences in London, while Starla talked about her job and interesting things she encountered daily.
“I still remember the first time we met,” Ha-neul said suddenly, his voice full of nostalgia. “You were lost, standing by the roadside and looking around.”
Starla chuckled softly, her laughter echoing gently in the night. “Oh my, that was so embarrassing! I was out with my friend, but she didn’t want to go home, and I was already exhausted. How could I not be? We had just arrived in Seoul, but she immediately wanted to explore.”
Ha-neul smiled, recalling the moment vividly. “I saw you looking so confused and tired, but there was something in your eyes that drew me to you. You seemed so spirited, even in your confusion.”
Starla nodded, reminiscing about the event. “Yes, I remember you approached me and asked if I needed help. At that moment, I felt so relieved. Seoul is so big and crowded, and I felt so small amidst all that.”
Ha-neul laughed softly. “I remember you trying to explain your hotel address with a mix of English and the few Korean words you knew. It was adorable.”
Starla blushed, her cheeks reddening. “I was so grateful you were there. If not, I might still be lost to this day.”
They laughed together, their voices blending with the cool night breeze. Ha-neul looked at Starla with affection. “Since that moment, I knew I wanted to get to know you better. And I’ve never regretted it. Like when we walked around Seoul, you were so enthusiastic about every little thing there.”
“I love exploring new places. And Seoul had many delightful surprises,” Starla said with a smile, briefly glancing at Ha-neul.
“So does London,” Ha-neul added. “Every corner has its own beauty, like tonight.”
They continued their journey peacefully, crossing a bridge over the Thames River. The stunning view of the buildings reflecting on the water’s surface mesmerized Starla. The city’s lights twinkled as if dancing on the calm river.
“Oh, do you have any plans for tomorrow?” Ha-neul suddenly asked, breaking the comfortable silence. His voice was soft, but full of hope.
Starla seemed to think for a moment, frowning sweetly. “No, why?”
“Tomorrow I’m going to the beach to meet a colleague. Would you like to come?” he asked, his tone full of enthusiasm. Ha-neul smiled, his eyes sparkling.
Starla’s eyes widened, a flash of excitement lighting up within them. “The beach? Of course, I’d love to!” she replied without hesitation, her smile widening. “I’ve wanted to spend time at the beach for a long time. The sound of the waves and the sea breeze always make me feel calm.”
Ha-neul smiled in relief. “Great, I’m glad to hear that. The beach we’re going to is beautiful, with white sand and clear water. Plus, my colleague will be happy to meet you too.”
Starla chuckled, feeling flattered. “I’m also happy to meet your colleague. It must be fun to meet new people and share stories.”
Finally, they arrived at Starla’s apartment. Ha-neul carefully parked his car in front of the grand and historic building. Starla sighed in relief but also felt a bit reluctant to part with Ha-neul that night.
“Thank you for driving me, Ha-neul,” Starla said sincerely, looking at him with sparkling eyes.
“You’re welcome, Starla. I enjoyed spending tonight with you,” Ha-neul replied softly.
They got out of the car and walked to the apartment entrance. Ha-neul waited until Starla entered the lobby before waving. “Good night, Starla. See you tomorrow.”
“Good night, Ha-neul. See you,” Starla replied, a smile never leaving her face.
As the elevator doors closed, Starla felt a deep warmth and happiness. Tonight had become one of the most beautiful nights of her life, where every second felt so precious. With that warm feeling, she stepped into her apartment. Suddenly, she felt her heart pounding rapidly. Starla was confused; what exactly was this feeling she was experiencing?
