58. Ji-won's Mind Game
Ha-neul's mind raced as Ji-won maneuvered through the crowded streets of Seoul, her car slicing through the evening traffic with practiced ease. The city's vibrant chaos mirrored the tumult he felt inside—a mix of apprehension, curiosity, and a deep-seated wariness towards Ji-won and her ulterior motives.
Silence hung heavy between them, punctuated only by the occasional honk of horns and the distant hum of the city. Ha-neul's thoughts were a whirlwind of memories and unanswered questions, each turn of the road bringing him closer to confronting a past he had tried so hard to bury.
Finally, unable to bear the tension any longer, Ha-neul broke the silence. "Why not telling me now, Ji-won?" he asked, his voice cutting through the air with a sharp edge.
Ji-won gave him a quick glance before returning her focus to the road ahead. "Timing is everything, Ha-neul," he replied vaguely, his tone betraying nothing. "Sometimes, it takes time to say something."
"What do you want from me?" Ha-neul pressed, his tone demanding clarity.
Ji-won sighed softly, a hint of weariness in her voice. "I want you to trust me," she admitted finally, her gaze flickering towards him. "Like you used to."
"I don't know if I can trust you," Ha-neul confessed, his voice tinged with vulnerability.
Ji-won nodded slowly, as if weighing her next words carefully. "Trust is earned, Ha-neul," she said softly, her eyes searching his face. "I understand if you're hesitant, but sometimes, we have to confront our past to move forward."
The car slowed to a stop at a traffic light, casting a momentary pause in their conversation. Ha-neul stared out of the window, his mind racing with memories of a time when he and Ji-won had been inseparable, their lives intertwined in ways that now felt like a distant dream.
The traffic light turned green, signaling Ji-won to move on. The car moved forward, taking them deeper into the heart of bustling Seoul. Ha-neul felt as if he was hurtling towards an uncertain destination, his emotions raw and exposed in the face of the unyielding Ji-won. He realized that this was not the way to his home.
"This isn't the way to my home, where are we going?" Ha-neul asked suddenly, his voice showing a hint of urgency.
Ji-won glanced at him, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Somewhere quiet," she replied mysteriously. "A place where we can talk."
As they drove on, the city's skyline faded into the rearview mirror, replaced by quieter streets lined with quaint cafes and hidden alleyways. Ha-neul's mind whirled with questions, each passing moment bringing him closer to the truth he had long sought.
Whether Ji-won held the answers he needed remained to be seen. But one thing was certain—haunted by the ghosts of their shared past, Ha-neul was about to embark on a journey that would test his resolve and redefine his understanding of loyalty, loss, and the fragile nature of human being.

Inside the bustling cafe in Seoul, a cozy ambiance enveloped the patrons. Soft chatter and occasional laughter mingled with the clinking of ceramic cups and the gentle whir of espresso machines. The air was rich with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, intertwining with the sweet fragrance of pastries displayed on polished countertops.
Warm lighting bathed the intimate space, casting a golden hue on wooden tables adorned with small vases of delicate flowers. Comfortable chairs invited guests to linger over their beverages, while soft music played in the background, creating a soothing backdrop to conversations that ebbed and flowed.
Behind the sleek bar, baristas in aprons skillfully crafted intricate latte art, their focused expressions mirroring the dedication to their craft. Patrons sipped on steaming cups of coffee, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of laptops and smartphones, each engrossed in their own world amidst the communal buzz of the cafe.
Through large windows, glimpses of Seoul's vibrant streets peeked in, where passersby hurried along the sidewalk under a sky that hinted at the city's constant motion. Yet within the cafe's walls, time seemed to slow down, offering a serene haven for coffee lovers and seekers of quiet moments alike.
Among the crowd, Ha-neul and Ji-won sat facing each other. In front of them were food and two glasses of drinks, but Ha-neul didn't seem to touch them at all. Clearly, Ha-neul appeared uncomfortable being there with Ji-won.
"We're here now. Just say what you want to talk about," Ha-neul stated firmly.
Ji-won smiled briefly and took a sip of her drink. It seemed she intentionally prolonged the moment to play with Ha-neul's emotions.
"No need to rush, we have plenty of time. Just enjoy this food and drink first," Ji-won said meaningfully, looking at Ha-neul.
"You've always been good at evading answers, Ji-won," Ha-neul remarked, his voice tinged with frustration. "Why should this time be any different?"
Ji-won turned to him, her expression serious. "Because this time, Ha-neul, I want to make things right," she said earnestly, her voice carrying a hint of regret. "I know I've made mistakes in the past, but I need you to believe me one more time."
Ha-neul rolled his eyes. "You've said this before, and you said trust is earned, not given."
Ji-won chuckled softly and replied, "You're right. I repeated my words to assure you that I have no ill intentions."
Ha-neul fell silent, staring intensely at Ji-won as if trying to read her mind. Trusting Ji-won wasn't easy, especially after what she had done to him in the past. What exactly had transpired between them remained unclear, known only to them.
"Maybe not bad for you, but it was different for me," Ha-neul finally responded, his voice tinged with both skepticism and a hint of longing for resolution.
Their conversation subsided into a tense silence, each lost in their own thoughts amidst the noise of the cafe. Outside, the city continues to pulse with life, oblivious to the private drama unfolding within the cafe's walls. Ha-neul can't shake the feeling that Ji-won has brought him here not just to talk, but for an ulterior motive.
Ha-neul's expression hardened, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied Ji-won across the table. The bustling ambiance of the café seemed to fade into the background as their conversation took center stage.
"You've been sarcastic since we were at the airport," Ji-won said.
"Enough with the games, Ji-won," Ha-neul spoke sharply, his voice cutting through the ambient noise. "I need to know why you've brought me here. What's your angle this time?"
Ji-won gazed at Ha-neul, a small curve playing at the corner of her lips. "Okay, Sweetheart, actually you already know what I want from you."
Ha-neul flinched, not understanding what Ji-won meant. Despite knowing Ji-won for a long time, Ha-neul found it difficult to grasp what was on her mind. To him, Ji-won's thoughts were like a winding labyrinth, difficult to navigate and understand its direction. Yes, beneath her beauty, Ji-won had a series of tricks she used to get whatever she wanted.
He remembered their past encounters, moments where Ji-won effortlessly manipulated situations to her advantage. Her charm could disarm even the most guarded individuals, drawing them into her intricate web of schemes and desires. Ha-neul had seen firsthand how she could bend conversations, twist perceptions, and orchestrate events to serve her own interests.
Yet, despite this knowledge, there were times when Ji-won's true intentions remained elusive. Her enigmatic demeanor masked layers of complexity that Ha-neul struggled to penetrate. Was she genuinely expressing her feelings now, or was this another ploy in her playbook of manipulation?
For a moment, he considered walking away, severing the ties that bound him to Ji-won and her enigmatic allure. Yet, despite his resolve to distance himself, a part of him hesitated. There was a lingering curiosity, a desire to unravel the mysteries that Ji-won guarded so closely.
"I don't understand what you mean," Ha-neul said firmly, "I'm tired of traveling for over a dozen hours, only to be played by you upon arriving in Seoul."
Ji-won chuckled softly. "I thought you were smart, Ha-neul."
"Well, I'm not smart enough to figure out your bad intentions," Ha-neul retorted sharply.
Ji-won took another sip of her drink, then her gaze locked onto Ha-neul's. "Listen to me, Ha-neul. What I want is you."
Hearing that, Ha-neul was taken aback, unable to believe what he had just heard. Ha-neul couldn't fathom how Ji-won could be so confident in saying that, knowing that he despised her. Ji-won's mind was like a puzzle that no one dared to piece together.
