Chapter 38

I looked back swiftly when Aaron said that a car was following us. “Oh my God, Aaron, are you serious?” I said, looking again. There was a dark-colored car right behind us.

Aaron took the next right without using a blinker, and the car stayed behind us. “Yes they are definitely following us, I can’t tell if it’s just a driver or if there is a passenger too,” Aaron said as he quickly drove in between two cars.

The faster Aaron drove, the quicker the car behind us drove. Aaron radioed ahead to the police station that someone was following him. Aaron kept driving as I gripped the handle on the car door. I had never gone this fast in a car, not even in Brad’s sports car. We were weaving in and out of traffic. The street signs flashed past the window and I could not even read what roads we had passed.

I glanced over and saw that the speedometer showed over 100 miles per hour. “Hold on,” Aaron said as he weaved in and out of traffic just narrowly missing a small red sports car. Glancing in the side mirror, I could see that the car was still trailing us.

“Is dispatch sending someone to help us?” I cried as we continued to speed through traffic.

“Yeah, but it is going to take a minute for them to catch up to us,” Aaron said as we sped through traffic. “Go in the glove box there and grab out my gun.”

I opened the glove box and there was a black pistol, his service pistol that he used as a police officer. I grabbed the handle and held it out towards Aaron, “Just hold it for a few minutes till we need it,” Aaron said.

“What do you mean we need it?” I asked in a panic. My heart was racing, my mouth was dry, and I was just scared.

“Well if dispatch doesn’t send the police soon to help it may be that we will need it,” Aaron said as he took a quick left onto another street.

I screamed as a car pulled in front of us, Aaron swerved to avoid a collision, but the car that was following us crashed right into the side of the car that we had narrowly missed. Aaron slowed down and reversed quickly towards the car crash. The driver of the car that almost hit us was getting out and stumbling in the road. Aaron grabbed him and dragged him away from the car that was following us. As Aaron began to move back towards his own vehicle, shots were fired. I could hear gunshots and looked back as Aaron dragged the man behind the front of his car for cover.

I screamed as another few gunshots pierced the night air. I ducked down as I saw Larry standing behind the car where Aaron was hiding with the other driver. I grabbed the gun and slowly slipped out my door, careful not to make much noise. Larry was screaming, "come out Aaron, I just want to talk. You know you always got all the girls, Aaron. Couldn’t you just let me have her? You took Daisy, Susan, and Mary. All I wanted was just one girl, Aaron. Come on, Aaron, I WANT TO TALK.”

“Yeah, right,” Aaron screamed back. Aaron had his back pressed up to the front of the car from the other driver. The other driver looked like he was going to cry. He saw me as I crawled towards them.

I slowly crawled, keeping as low as I could to the ground, towards Aaron. He was making motions for me to back up. I kept moving towards him. I finally got within just a couple of feet of him and handed him the gun. Then I slithered back to the car and quietly opened the door. I crawled into the backseat. I could see Aaron and the other driver seated on the ground, crouching at the front of the car. Larry was pacing back and forth, waving his gun in the air.

“Why, Aaron, why did you have to go and do that? I told you I loved her. You didn’t even believe me.” Larry said as he paced back and forth at the back of the vehicle. “Vivienne, why don’t you come on over here and I won’t shoot Aaron,” Larry said, pointing the gun towards the car I was sitting in.

I screamed and ducked down as my heart raced faster, and a bullet shattered the back window. Glass rained down into the car and I covered my head with my hands, pressing my face into the back seat. I heard Aaron screaming at Larry.

“Hey Larry, how about you come on over here?” Aaron screamed as he turned around and peeked over the hood of the car. I could see Larry was standing directly behind the other driver's car and could not see Aaron. Aaron shot and hit Larry in the shoulder. Larry stumbled back, gripping his shoulder. He cried out in pain as he hit the ground. The gun fell out of his hand. Aaron quickly ran around the other side of the car and stood over Larry, who was gripping his shoulder.

“You shot me,” Larry screamed as Aaron kicked the gun away from him.

“You tried to kill me, you psycho,” Aaron said as he grabbed Larry’s other arm and brought him to his feet. Sirens blared on the street as 5 police cars pulled up, and the officers jumped out with their guns drawn.

“Wooh, fellas,” Aaron said, putting up his hands.

Just as Aaron let go of Larry, he lunged forward for the gun that lay on the ground. Before he could even stand up with the gun, three officers shot him. One bullet hit him in the head spraying blood, another in his leg, and one to his chest. Larry slumped forward, and the gun fell onto the pavement, I could see he was no longer breathing. I screamed as the officers lowered their guns, I couldn’t see Aaron, he was on the ground somewhere. I jumped from the vehicle and ran towards the car. The other driver was standing there shocked. I could see he had a large gash on his head.

“We need some help,” I screamed as I reached the man and removed my T-shirt and held it to his head as I stood in my tank top and jeans. An ambulance pulled up with the sirens blaring. Everything was chaos as Aaron was still laying on the ground, I slowly walked towards him. He had been hit but was breathing. One of the bullets had hit him in the leg that the officers fired. As soon as the paramedic came and got the other driver, I ran over to where Aaron was being looked at by another paramedic. “Oh my God, Aaron, are you okay?” I cried out as I hugged him tightly.

“Yes it just grazed me, they said I might just need a few stitches,” he said, glancing down at his leg where blood was beginning to pool on the ground. The bright red liquid was making me nauseous. I looked over and saw Larry still slumped over, an officer was standing next to him looking at his body.

“Oh, thank God, honey, I can’t lose you,” I said, letting him go so that the paramedic could work on his leg.

“Ma’am we are going to transport him to the hospital and I think you should come as well, that’s a nasty gash on your head,” the paramedic said pointing at me.

I raised my hand up and felt a sticky substance on my fingers. When I pulled my fingers away, they were covered in blood. I didn’t even remember getting hit, until it dawned on me that the glass raining down upon my head probably caused this. Aaron looked up at me.

“Vivienne, Vivienne,” he said as everything started to turn black.
