Chapter 71
“Get back here!” Sam said between clenched teeth. When he saw that she was getting away from him, he hopped on the bike, powered it, and set off after his prey.
When Rachel heard the sound of the bike coming to life behind her, her fear tripled and her pace increased.
“Help! I’m over here!” She screamed as she approached the unknown male voice that had been calling her.
She heard Sam rev up his bike behind her just as a police car burst through the tall bushes in front of her with its headlights on at full blast. She looked back and saw that Sam was only a few feet away from her with murderous rage in his eyes. She was practically sandwiched between an oncoming vehicle and a motorbike following her at top speed.
Rachel had to think fast or risk being crushed to death by either her rescuer or her abductor. She made a quick detour and fled to the left in the nick of time before Sam could run over her with his bike. He recovered quickly and swerved to the left in hot pursuit after her.
“Stop right there!” The police yelled at him, following closely with their car.
“Not a chance in hell!” He shouted back at them as he continued to follow Rachel.
Her breath came out in puffs as she ran for her dear life. She was getting tired but she dared not stop or else Sam would –
She felt the burn of the bike’s front tire hitting her right leg and knocking her down. As she landed on the grass, she heard gunshots ringing out and she watched with horror as Sam catapulted off his bike like a stuntman flying through the air. The bike spun out of control, missing her by a few inches as it landed somewhere above her head.
One of the policemen ran to where she lay on the ground and bent over her. “Mrs. Fraser, I’m Sergeant Aiko and I’m here to take you home. Are you ok?”
She glanced at her injured leg and saw that it was bent at an odd angle. “I think my leg is broken,” she said weakly and passed out.
**********
When she regained consciousness, she was on a hospital bed and her broken leg was in a cast. The pristine whiteness of the room and the beeping sounds from the ECG monitor beside her took her back to several weeks ago when she woke up in a hospital in New York after the fire incident at her mother’s house.
“We’ve got to stop bumping into each other like this,” Derek joked softly when he saw that she was awake.
She chuckled when she saw him sitting there, looking like he was the one who got run over by a bike, not her. “I agree. It’s getting weird,” she replied groggily with a smile.
“Gosh, I’m so sorry, babe. I should have brought Mark and the others with us on this trip even though you insisted that I should leave them behind. I need to always remember that we are not regular people and we’ll probably always be in potential danger wherever we go,” he said, speaking in a rush.
“It’s ok, honey. You don’t need to apologize but I agree with you about taking the bodyguards with us everywhere we go from now on. Sam wouldn’t have gotten away with sneaking into our house and kidnapping me if any of the guys were around,” she said. “Speaking of which, where is he now?”
“In the morgue,” Derek replied flatly. “He smashed his head on a rock when he fell out of his bike.”
“Aw… what a terrible way to die,” she said, feeling genuinely sad for Sam even though he was responsible for her broken leg. “How’s Yasmin taking it?”
Derek shrugged. “She was understandably upset but she seems to be recovering from the shock, thanks to the charming Javier who has not left her side all night.”
“How is he?”
“Better. He got three stitches on his temple but he’s a champ and he’s holding up well.”
“And my little pumpkin?”
“Still asleep under the watchful eyes of Elaine. Meanwhile, Mark, Frank, and Shane will be joining us here tomorrow.”
“I’m happy to hear that,” she said with a smile.
There was a knock on the door followed by a doctor wearing green scrubs and a pleasant smile. “I’m glad to see you awake, Mrs. Fraser. How are you doing?”
“I’ve been better but it feels good to still be alive,” she replied happily.
“Great,” said the pretty doctor. “And I’m happy to inform you that your baby is doing just fine too.”
Rachel and Derek exchanged a glance. “Baby?”
The doctor noticed their surprise and bit her lip. “You didn’t know?”
“Know what?” Derek asked.
“Well… your wife is pregnant,” she replied to him. To Rachel, she said, “Ma’am, you’re seven weeks pregnant.”
She gasped. “Oh, my God!”
“We are having a baby?” Derek whispered in awe. “Babe, Zoe is going to be a big sister.”
Rachel began to cry happy tears as the news of her pregnancy became real to her. She was about to have another baby with Derek and she couldn’t imagine anything else more beautiful than that right now.
“I’ll excuse you two for now,” said the doctor. “I’ll send in a nurse later to take your vitals. Congratulations to you two.”
“This calls for a celebration,” said Derek with a happy smile.
“What do you have in mind?” She asked sweetly.
He grinned. “Do you remember how you surprised me with a grand birthday party even though I was aware that you were planning it? Well, I’m thinking of returning the favor.”
“It’s not my birthday anytime soon,” she laughed.
“I know but I’m going to blow your mind, sweetheart,” he promised.
“Sounds exciting,” she grinned.
“You have no idea…”
“I better recover quickly and get out of here then,” she joked and kissed him.
“I can’t wait,” he replied. “I love you, Rachel. I love you with all of my heart and soul and can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”
“I love you too, Derek. You are my life, my world, and my happy place. It’s me and you forever, baby.”
The End.
