Chapter 16
The doctor had expected such a reaction but he was glad it was the lieutenant that he was speaking to and not to officer Mary.
"What will happen now?" The lieutenant asked the doctor.
"He will have to stop working and focus on getting better. In this case, we don't know how long it will take. Hmm…" Rhe doctor sighed deeply which attracted the curiosity of the lieutenant.
"Is there anything else?" The lieutenant asked.
"I'm not really sure and don't know how to say this. We've never had such cases of a werewolf bite and in this case…he might have some changes." The doctor replied with difficulty.
"What kind of changes? What do you mean doctor Akin?" The lieutenant asked. It was clear that the lieutenant got to know the name of the doctor from their pleasantries which were exchanged earlier and it was also written on his tag and name on the desk.
"Changes like…a transformation…sort of…into a werewolf kind." The doctor replied.
"Darn it! This is why I wanted them to get rid of those beasts as soon as they could." The lieutenant cursed under his breath.
"Not to worry much, we'll prescribe drugs and i sections for him which he must be given every day as prescribed without missing any out. We'll give him some antibiotics too and some strong injections to fight against any sort of changes that might take place in his body. He'll be fine but I'm afraid it'll take much longer." The doctor replied.
"Thank you sir, I appreciate it but can he be admitted to the police hospital? That way, it'll be easier for us to check up on him." The lieutenant asked.
"I'm afraid you'll have to leave him here until he shows signs of recovery before he can be moved away. This is the biggest hospital in town and it's the best place he can get special treatment as required." The doctor replied.
"Okay sir thanks once again." The lieutenant replied as he got up to take his leave. He kept pondering on what the doctor had said to him.
What will happen to Jason? Jason had been good to them, he was among the best detectives who had solved many crimes. The lieutenant wishes him quick recovery as he thought of another problem, Mary. How was heno going to break such news to her? Of course she would run mad.
Maybe that was why the doctor preferred to speak to him rather than to her. He couldn't tell her about it in her present state of mind, not only was she weak, she might even pass out on hearing such news. He couldn't risk two lives at a time so he thought it wise not to tell her just yet. Even if he did, he wouldn't tell her the complete truth.
Back at Iremi nursery and primary school where the confusion had taken place, the humans who had been shot before began to transform into wolves. It was a scary sight as people screamed in fear, throwing everything that they had on them and ran to safety. Those who were trying to get photos of what was going on were killed. The transformation that took place got scarier as the whole town was thrown up to confusion.
The lieutenant had given orders for everyone to retreat while fire was going to be opened on them and the school would be set ablaze. People died in their numbers, relatives mourned but there was nothing they could do. They couldn't even blame anyone as they couldn't Kay a finger ss to whose fault it was. The news of the wolves and how they had arrived hadn't spread out yet.
The lieutenant didn't want to create an announcement to the public because he believed that it was something that could be handled. Here he was, in confusion and dismay, the town was going wild but they were all sure that the wolves would be killed in the fire that was set on the school after all the children and teachers were rescued for those who were still alive at the cost of the lives of the police officers who died.
Mary saw the news on the television in the ward as she panicked in fear. That was when she got to know that Jason was lucky to have left the scene on time even though she wasn't happy with his present predicament. The lieutenant came into the ward and saw her watching the news.
"You must have known what's going on now." He said to her,
"Things have escalated sir, what would happen to the town?" She asked the lieutenant in fear.
"Thwy would all die in the fire, none of them can survive it, fire is one of the weaknesses of werewolves. It's the owner of the school we should feel pity for and those who lost their loved ones in it, including us who lost seven policemen to the beasts." The lieutenant replied.
"That's sad…I'm glad Jason is still alive." She said to the lieutenant.
"Yes, that's a good one." The lieutenant replied nonchalantly.
In Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria at around 9:55 pm, the wind blew hard and wild. A couple who was asleep had left a glass cup of water on the table as it began to shake, making a vibrating noise. Keys on the table too also rattled as it shook until the cup fell down and broke, waking the couple.
They noticed the vibration of the room as their bed also shook. They sat in one place as they were scared and wondered what was happening. They opened the curtain to check what was going on and saw the strong wind that blew so much, windows began to crack and shattered. The ground now started shaking more vigorously as the roads cracked.
The cloud became dark as lightning struck. Houses began to collapse as people ran out of their houses in the dead of the night, screaming and crying for help. They stood outside as they watched and before they knew what was happening, the ground began to disintegrate as it opened and things fell into the deep dark hole.
The crack began to spread quickly and rapidly as cars, houses, trees and people fell into the hole. It began to rain heavily as lightning struck the ground. People began to run in their numbers to go far away from the earthquake that was happening as the crack on the ground began to spread.
Children cried, women wailed, men screamed as there was confusion all over Wuse, where the incident was happening. The ground opened with large big cracks as it not only followed in a straight path, it also created a circle then cracked as the cracking line became visible before the portion of ground that was circled fell through into the deep dark hole.
The rain had just stopped and everywhere became dry with the moon high up in the sky. It was now around 10:34pm when the place got all dried up as though it hadn't rained before. The cracking had just stopped now as the people of the city gathered themselves together at one place for fear of moving out and getting swallowed up by the ground.
From afar, they could see thick dust as though some creatures were coming with a run. It was a new pack of wolves, they had come out of the ground. Some had injuries on their body while some were perfectly alright as they ran in their numbers and began to attack the people who had stood, watching them as though they had never seen such creatures before.
The bloodshed there was very high as people were devoured in their numbers. People cried as they ran as fast as their legs could carry them even though they were tired from running away from the earthquake. The whole of Abuja was in distress and almost wiped out as the wolves were in their numbers.
At that same midnight, the police force came in for intervention and began to open fire on the wolves. Some were shot dead while some scurried away into the that ck forest and ran away as no one could see them because it was dark. The tension still continued until 2:00am in the morning. People that lost their houses to the earthquake didn't have anywhere to go to spend the rest of the night as they stayed outside during the cold night.
The next morning, it was announced on the news everywhere in Nigeria as to what happened the previous night at Abuja. People cried and wailed but there was absolutely nothing that could be done. Newscasters and journalists did their work as they reported on the news on every TV station as it was captured on every network.
Mary, who had already woken up, went to get some breakfast for Jason. As she walked past the reception to the cafeteria, she saw the news on the television as she also heard people talking about it. The tray of food that she had gotten to feed Jason who was out of coma already fell to the ground, spilling the hot tea that she was carrying. She was still in her police uniform as people turned to look at her.
On sighting that she was a police officer, they immediately offered to help her as she was still in shock. She quickly rushed to the wars where Jason laid as he was still sleeping. She took out her phone and dialed the lieutenant's number. He picked up.
"Good morning sir, have you seen the news?" She asked him as his voice sounded as though he was still in bed.
"What news?" He asked her back in a sleepy voice.
She asked him to turn on the television and see what she was talking about. A lady was reporting about the earthquake that had happened the previous night and the attack of the wolves that almost wiped out the entire city.
The lieutenant immediately got out of bed and had a quick shower after which he rushed to the station.
"What was that about?" Jason asked her as she turned to look at him. He was already awake but still felt weak.
