Chapter 17

"It's nothing baby…is just some silly news, that's all." She replied to him as she went over to him.

"What silly news?" He asked her as she took a seat beside him.

"Come on Jason, there's no need to bother you about it, it's just some news and that's all. It's nothing serious." She said to him,

"Okay…if you say so. Have you spoken to the lieutenant?" He asked her.

"Yes I did, he sent his regards to you. He visited yesterday but you weren't awake yet, you were still unconscious." Mary replied

"Babe you looked troubled, are you sure you're okay? Is everything fine?" Jason asked her.

"Yeah sure I am, I'm fine…it's just that…I'm worried about you, that's all." Mary replied.

"You don't have to, okay? I'm all fine, I'm doing just well now alright?" He said to her, trying his bear to convince her not to be worrying herself too much.

"Did the doctor tell you when I can be discharged?" He asked her.

"Not yet…he said you still need some rest and you should stay here until you fully recover." Mary replied.

A nurse came into the room to administer an injection to Jason.

"Good day ma, good morning sir. I'm happy that you're doing very well this morning." The nurse said as she beamed with smiles on her face.

"Yes, he's a strong man and can resist anything." Mary boasted.

"That's true, he looks it. Let's take a look at how your wound is doing while I redress it." She said to Jason as she opened the bed cover with the help of Mary. She began to untie the bandage that was tied on his leg as she now cleaned the wound with antiseptic and applied some antibiotics cream on it lightly before typing it up with another new and clean bandage.

"I wonder where all these wolves are coming from." The nurse said to them she continued cleaning up the other wounds while Jason shrieked in pain and Mary kept telling him sorry and reminding him of how brave he was.

"Where could those wolves have come out from?" The nurse asked again.

Mary tried to give her an eye signal to stop talking but she didn't understand.

"Can you imagine that the whole of Abuja now is under tension and earthquake?" She said again and this time, Jason's attention was dragged into what she was saying.

"What tension? What's happening in Abuja?" Jason asked the nurse.

"Erm…what she means is that the people are now spreading false rumors about an earthquake that happened…" Mary replied to Jason even before the nurse could say anything.

"What earthquake? What are you asking about?" Jason asked with curiosity.

"You don't know about the earthquake that happened last night in Abuja? People died in their numbers and it's believed to be caused by the wol..." The nurse started to run her mouth as Mary cut her in.

"Rumors…she meant to say rumors…a five storey building fell to the ground which destroyed the nearby buildings and of course, the ground too was affected so that was it, that's what she is trying to tell you." Mary replied as she didn't want Jason to know about what was going on.

"No…that's not what happened. Didn't you see the news? It's all over on every network station. It was caused by a wolf attack around nine pm to two am this morning." The nurse dropped the news that Mary tried her best to keep away from Jason. Mary blinked for the nurse to keep her mouth shut but she couldn't undo the language.

"Madam, is something wrong with your eye? Why are you blinking like that?" The nurse asked Mary.

"Babe, is this true?" Jason asked Mary.

"Erm…it's not totally true…it's just rumors from the last incident that happened…it's nothing of a big deal don't mind what she's saying. That's just the rumors that they have been spreading around." Mary replied.

"Ah ah no oh…that's not the truth, it's not rumors ma, it's real. In fact, let me show you." The nurse replied as she took the remote control to the television that was hanging on the wall and switched it on. The news displayed what happened last night and it showed how the city was flooded with dead people.

Jason couldn't believe his sight. He opened his mouth in awe as his jaws dropped down in shock.

"Shit! Where the hell did they come from?" He asked no one in particular as he read the news headline again.

"EARTHQUAKE DISASTER CAUSED BY WEREWOLVES"

"Is the lieutenant aware of this? Was that what you were talking about on the phone this morning? Babe why did you lie to me?" He asked her.

"I'm sorry Jason…I didn't want to tell you for fear of your health condition…I didn't want to leave you worried that's why I thought it wise to keep it away from you until you were fully recovered. I'm sorry darling." She apologized.

"It's okay, I understand. But don't do this next time again, you should tell me everything I need to know and don't keep anything away from me next time. Such news won't make me have high blood pressure and even if it does, it's my job and my country so I have to do exactly as it is expected of me." He said to her,

"I'm sorry baby. " She apologized again.

"I'm done for now, I'll come back and check up on you okay? Just make sure you take your drugs as prescribed and don't forget the time intervals please otherwise, you'll get a strange transformation as the infection is worse." The nurse replied.

"What? What are you talking about?" Mary asked the nurse as Jason also looked at her with a confused expression.

"He is having an infection as a result of the bite that he got from the wolves and that's why we are administering injections to him, also the drugs are also part of utz to stop the infection from spreading and there are high chances of him getting transformed into one of those werewolves if he skips taking his drugs or miss the time he is supposed to take it.

"My boyfriend has an infection? Why didn't you tell us about this? Also having high chances of transformation? Why the hell did you keep such information away from us?" Mary yelled at the nurse as her anger boiled in her.

"I'm sorry but I thought the doctor had told you already. He told me the patient's guardian is already aware. I thought you knew about it…" The nurse replied innocently.

"I wasn't told any damn shit and the doctor never said anything of such to me!" Mary yelled at the nurse.

"Wait…wait calm down babe, it might not be you that the doctor spoke to." Jason replied as he was also trying to get a hold of himself after hearing such shocking news.

"Then it's who?" She asked him back.

"Dis you say that the lieutenant was here yesterday?" Jason asked Mary.

"Yes I did but he was here only briefly, why?" She asked him back as she couldn't grasp any useful information on how the lieutenant had something to do with this.

"He must have been the one that spoke with the doctor." Jason said to her.

"How…wait…could it be that the doctor spoke to him instead of me?" Mary asked as she tried to remember what the doctor said previously.

That was when it dawned on her after she had told Jason what happened when the nurse excused herself.

Jason felt pain that he wouldn't be able to walk again for some time as he feared that the infection might get worse. He asked Mary to call the lieutenant and ask him what the doctor had told him so that they can know how serious it is.

The lieutenant was called and he picked up the phone. After exchanging pleasantries with Jason and asking after his health, Jason went straight and asked what the doctor had told him. The lieutenant was surprised that he already got to know and asked who had told him. He asked if Mary told him even though she didn't know about it and he said that it was the nurse but she didn't say how serious it was as she had left the award already.

The lieutenant then told him everything that happened from when he arrived at the hospital.

Jason thanked the lieutenant for being supportive of him even in his present condition. He had tears welled up in his eyes but had to suppress them. He felt as though his life was going to be shattered if anything happened to him.

He hid his fears away from Mary, he knew just how worried she was going to be and scared. He didn't want her to feel that way therefore, he had to be strong to also be there for her. The breakfast had gone cold but he agreed to take it like that. Mary fed him as he ate the food silently.

He didn't have any appetite to eat but he just had to eat so that Mary wouldn't be worried and also so that he could take his drugs as he feared transforming into a wolf.
