Chapter 39: Kayla

DIANA

"We're gonna be late for school, Cupcake"

I felt Dylan pinch my cheek as an attempt to wake me up but laziness got the best part of me and I left them shut.

"I know you're awake"

Using his fingers, he pushed the loose strands on my forehead to my temple and revealed the smile I had plastered to my face.

"Leave me alone" I mumbled "I don't wanna go to school"

"You have chemistry test today, remember?"

"Did you really have to say that?" I asked, finally opening my eyes and staring up at him.

His messy brown hair fell across his face, the shadow blocking his eyes from my blurry vision.

He had the same smile on his face since yesterday, the awkward one he had on when he said something about possession I didn't really understand.

All I could see was how nervous he was while saying the same thing he literally said to every girl he threw a wink. He was red from all the smiling and pressure on his face while I was caught between giving in or telling him to leave.

Could it be stupid to say yes? I mean, he hurt me a couple of times but that was only because I unknowingly started it at the first place.

Could it be cruel for say no? We had equal faults but something in me still felt the pain and selfishly blocked out all the thoughts of how he possibly felt too.

Besides, he had done quite a lot of things and sacrificed some of his time for my satisfaction. First, he took me in to stay in his home for as long as I wanted. I couldn't imagine how it would've felt to get foster care or stay in an orphanage.

The whole school would get to know about it and Cassandra would've gotten another reason to make my life feel worse than the mess it was.

Second, he got me clothes, shoes and stuff I couldn't have afforded on my own. Not that I was so attracted to expensive bags and stuff, I just appreciated it cause no one had cared so much about me ever since my father left.

Third, he got me a room fit for a queen. It had more than I needed and was decorated to perfection.

I couldn't have thought I'd feel so comfortable and happy in a few days.

Usually, he spent his time with his clique and sometimes Cassandra cause she was always unnecessarily in the picture for a reason I had no idea about.

The point is, he left all of that for me.

I couldn't be so selfish and forget all of that because of a dumb misunderstanding.

Besides, I kinda had a teensy bitsy little crush on him.

Okay, I had a huge crush on him, deal with it.

"It's not my fault I couldn't yell free food"

I sighed and buried my head in his chest, inhaling the cologne evident on his his vest. The skin beneath the thin clothing was warm against my bare face and honestly, was the best feeling ever.

It wasn't my idea to cuddle but it happened.

It was the first time I had held on to someone so tight like my life depended on it ever since my dad left.

Before then, I spent almost every night cuddled in between both my parents. I usually didn't need anything to keep me warm during the night.

Not to sound like I deserved pity or something, just saying I had forgotten how it felt before then.

At first, it was awkward staying to close to him with his breaths fanning my hair and hands playing with my hair but after a few minutes, I got used to the feeling.

"How long have you been awake?"

"Since Kayla came knocking on the door" Dylan said "Cause that's what little girls had age do"

"Why is she up so early?"

"An answer no one knows. She wakes up as early as four am then roams around the house and scare people for fun"

"Like insomnia?"

"Nope, definitely not insomnia. She sleeps late, wakes up early and hibernate during the day like every normal six year old"

"Shouldn't she visit the doctor for that or something?"

"I hate doctors"

I flinched and pulled away from Dylan once I heard someone speak behind me. He was just as surprised as I was and also scooted to the further end of the bed. Both squished up together, we figured out it was Kayla.

And she had been under the sheets all the while.

She didn't look surprised by our reaction. In stead, she had a normal emotionless look plastered on her face as she stared back at us.

Dylan and I regained our composure and moved back to our normal positions.

Dylan was the first to speak "What the hell is wrong with you?"

"That's harsh" I corrected "Were you finding problems with sleeping?"

"Nope, just keeping the rest for later" She replied, talking a sip from her iced coffee.

Iced coffee? Where the hell did she get that?

"That's not how it works" Dylan replied "You know what, I don't care. How long have you been here?"

"Since three o clock, I guess"

Okay, maybe she truly is just as weird as Dylan said she was.

"You've been in here for three hours? I told you to leave, remember?"

"Yeah but then I decided it'd be boring to do just as you say. Besides, Diana's bed is a lot softer than mine"

"Oh" I replied "Well, you're free to use my bed whenever you want_"

"No, she isn't" Dylan cut me off "This is our bed now and she's just gonna ruin it with her possessed stuffed conduits"

"They're not conduits"

"Yes, they are"

"No, they're not"

"Yes, they are"

"No, they're not"

"Yes, they are"

"No, they're not_"

"That's enough" I said, ending whatever argument they had between them. Dylan huffed and crossed his arms, just like every mature person would do and Kayla sipped from her coffee.

"Dylan, we both know the reason you don't want me here_"

"Don't you dare"

"Dylan creepishly stares at you in your sleep!"

Okay?

As if Kayla being so weird wasn't enough, Dylan also stared at me in my sleep?

It got even more awkward than when it was while we acted so mature after the kiss. I mean, staring at me in my sleep was on another level.

Didn't he get bored or something?

"No, I don't." Dylan replied, his face turning red from embarrassment "She's a liar"

"Then why were you awake even before she was?"

"Because, because that's what I do, okay? Someone's gotta wake up first"

"Oh please, I've been here for hours Dillie. You stared at her for thirty three minutes"

"I didn't" He placed his hands on my shoulder and pulled me to face him "She's lying, okay?"

"Liar liar pants on fire!"

"Get out Kayla" Dylan said, pointing at the door "Now"

"I'll get out when I want to but if you want me to now, then I guess I'll just have to tell her all you did in details"

"I hate you" Dylan said to the little six year old who looked untouched by his words. She stared at him with an obviously bored look on his face and periodically rolled her eyes.

"Don't worry, I'll save you from all the embarrassment. Not because I care, I just need a little help from you"

"I'm not gonna help you"

"Fine" She sighed and faced me "So when I first walked into your room, Dillie h_"

"What the hell do you want"

"Mom's gonna be busy tomorrow so I need you to drive me over to Ruby's"

"But I hate Ruby, she's mean"

"Well, deal with it cause she's my best friend" She paused "Oh, and Diana, Ruby's also six years old. Just so you know how cold he is"

"Oh please, I've met six year olds and they're nothing like both of you. They wear pink pretty dresses, wands and princess stuff and get their brothers whatever they want"

"Well, their brothers aren't born with half a brain"

I zoned out of their bickering and hopped off the bed. Neither of them noticed my absence as I headed to the bathroom. Not that I expected them to, I was just really surprised how concentrated and serious they could get on an argument that made no sense.

Once in the bathroom, I took out my toothbrush and stood before the mirror before brushing my teeth and rinsing my mouth when I was done. I replaced the toothbrush and splashed some water on my face before stepping away from the large mirror.

I

stripped off the pajamas after and took out the band in my hair, letting it fall gracefully to my shoulders.

I walked into the shower and had a long warm bath, washing my hair with a watermelon scented shampoo and spending minutes rinsing it out. Stepping out of the shower, I wrapped a long white robe around me and towel around my dripping wet hair.

I got out of the bathroom a minute later and just like I expected, met Kayla and Dylan arguing over something that most probably made no sense.

"My death is gonna be way cooler than yours!"

"No, mine is!"
