Number 21

Roman's heightened sense of hearing made it possible for him to hear the thumping hearts of the people riding on the rollercoaster as he approached the amusement park with his newly found family. Xander jumped on his feet, swinging the hand of Roman and that of his mother as he walked hand in hand in their middle.
"Mommy, look... I can jump like a kangaroo!" Xander jumped, suspending his legs in the air, while Roman and Lorelei held him up, swinging him back and forth.
Roman smiled widely, Xander was like a son he never had and the little bundle of joy always warmed his heart. Having a family was a beautiful thing and he planned to make this one his...
Xander's feet touched the ground once again when he was tired of being swung in the air. They made it into the park.
"Woah!" Xander clapped, bouncing on his heels and his curly hair flew around.
Roman glanced around the loud park, flitting his gaze past the different rides, picking up the smell of sweat and... Was that lust? He spun to look at Lei but it wasn't coming from her, she was too occupied eyeing the rollercoaster with adrenaline pumping through her veins.
Xander dashed away from their sites and horror slapped them in their faces.
"Xander!" Lei screamed, running after him.
Roman followed suit, maneuvering his way around people of different shapes and sizes. His nose didn't fail to pick up foul smell, causing his stomach to twist itself into knots.
He lost them for a moment and his heart raced, mouth turning dry as a lump sat in his throat. He thought of the worse scenarios and shook his head, driving off the negative thoughts and following their scent.
'What if the spy nabbed them?' He asked his wolf, terror-filled as he couldn't imagine life without the duo.
'Relax... They are in good condition. Their scent is not far from here.' His wolf calmed his nerves.
"Xander!" He heard Lorelei call her son and he followed the direction of her voice. "Papa bears, why did you do that?"
Relief washed over Roman when he saw them close to a water fountain. He hurried toward a crouching Lei, who was hugging Xander.
"I followed that." Xander pointed at a man who was dressed in a white overall and stood behind a cotton candy machine.
"Don't run off next time, someone could have taken you away from mommy," Lei said softly, pulling away from the hug and cupping his face.
Her heart had skipped a beat–scratch that, her heart had skipped two beats when Xander ran off. She couldn't imagine her papa bear getting lost, she would cry her eyes out till she died of depression.
Her hands pulled his face in and she kissed his forehead, caressing his cheeks with her thumbs.
"Who is the someone?" Xander asked innocently, looking at her from over his thick and long lashes.
"A bad man or woman." She answered, tucking the curly locks of hair that flattered his forehead, covering one of his eyes.
"Like a predator?" He chirped.
Lorelei frowned, tilting her head to the side as she studied his round baby face in skepticism. Where had he learned that word from?
"Yes... A predator." She answered.
Roman placed a soothing palm on her shoulder and she glanced back at the hand and trailed her gaze up to his face. He let go of her shoulder and ruffled Xander's hair.
She rose, letting Xander hug Roman's leg.
He dragged his up at Roman and gave him the puppy dog eyes, saying, "Can I get some cotton candy, daddy?"
Roman swallowed a big ball of saliva, surprised at the name Xander had used to address him and a foreign feeling washed over him like the waves of the ocean.
Roman's eyes met with those of Lorelei. Her eyebrows shot up and she blinked rapidly, appearing to be as surprised as Roman.
"Dad?" Xander puckered his red bottom lip and it wobbled as he tugged on Roman's pants.
Roman scratched his neck, nodding his head. Xander squealed, grabbing Roman's hand and pulling him toward the cotton candy machine.
Roman threw a quick look over his shoulder and shrugged when he met his questioning gaze of Lei.
They halted behind a woman who wore a red uniform, hinting that she was one of the many staffs of the amusement park. She held the hand of a little girl and appeared to be waiting for the cotton candy.
Xander grew impatient as he waited. He craned his neck, trying to see what was in front of the woman and Roman patted his head in a bid to calm him down.
The chocolate-skinned woman fished a dollar note out of her purse but a single key dropped to the ground and Xander bent to pick it up. Roman almost stopped Xander but didn't once he understood what the kid wanted to do.
"You dropped this, ma'am." Xander tapped the woman and she turned, casting her gaze on Xander.
"Oh!" She held her chest with a sweet smile. "What a sweet gentleman. Thank you. What's your name, little one?"
She collected the key from Xander and he grinned, saying, "Xander and this is my daddy."
He answered joyfully and she flashed a friendly expression at Roman.
After getting Xander's cotton candy, he was taken on a merry-go-round ride. Xander giggled on the horse, tightly clutching the pole.
"Mom!" Xander shouted gleefully. "Dad, look at me!"
Roman felt heat crawling up his face at the name and a fire of happiness burned in him. Lei rubbed her arm with an involuntary smile tugging the sides of her lips. She bit her bottom lip to hide the smile.
Lorelei held a camera to her eye and took random pictures of her boy.
Xander was done with his ride and they made their way to a tossing ring game, where he had to toss three yellow rings around a short pole.
"Yippie!" Xander screamed in excitement when Roman tossed all the rings and won a teddy bear.
Roman crouched in front of Xander and handed him the teddy bear. Xander launched at Roman, almost knocking him down–Roman wasn't expecting the hug.
Lei watched, pressing her lips into a small smile. Xander looked so happy with Roman and a part of her couldn't think of anyone better to be Xander's dad.
Roman rose and they walked in the direction of the rollercoaster but before it was a shop that sold roses. Roman gestured, asking Lei and Xander to wait.
Lorelei held Xander, craning her neck to see if she could sight Roman through the glass door. He advanced toward them; his smile grew wider with each step he took closer to the mother and son.
His hands were behind his back and once he reached them, he held out his hand to Lorelei, presenting a little pink rose to her.
She palmed her mouth. "You didn't have to."
Roman shrugged, reaching a hand to her face and tucking strands of her hair behind her ear. He gently push the bottom of the rose into her hair and held her gaze with a sweet smile that never faltered.
Lorelei's heart fluttered and she returned his smile with her hypnotic one.
"Thank you," she said softly and he rubbed her cheek before taking back his hand.
They headed to the rollercoaster and luckily for them, they saw the nice woman whose key had fallen out of her purse. She was a worker in the park but her teenage daughter and toddler had come to visit her at work.
"Thank you for accepting to watch my papa bear, we'll be back for him." Lorelei thanked the kind woman and playfully pinched Xander's cheek. "Be good to the nice lady, okay?"
"Okay, mama!" Xander chortled, barely containing his happiness.
Xander turned to face the caramel-skinned toddler his age, who had told Lei her name was Maya.
Roman and Lorelei got into the rollercoaster, sitting side by side and smiling with anticipation swelling in their chests as the rest of the people climbed aboard. The ride began to move slowly and they shared a look of understanding as if to say, "Here we go."
The ride's pace increased and joy engulfed Lorelei as the wind slapped her in the face, tossing her hair around in messy arrays. Her heart pounded, pumping excitement into her veins as she gripped the handle, feeling sick in the gut every time the ride went up and race down.
Roman squinted, body vibrating as ripples of nostalgia and happiness rippled through him. His heart skipped a beat when the ride dropped down, making his stomach feel sick in a good way. The wind wrapped itself around his face and he swallow a shout of glee.
He stealthily moved his hand to that of Lorelei and interlocked fingers with her, igniting a fire in his soul.
"This is so much fun!" She screamed, laughing heartily, bursting with joy.
Tears filled her eyes and her stomach clenched as she felt their intertwined fingers burn, sending a foreign feeling into her heart.
Roman smiled so much that it hurt. For the first time, he released himself and had fun to the fullness of his heart with the woman of his dreams beside him. And their beautiful son of course.
"Yes!" Lei screamed, almost screaming Roman's name but refrained from doing so.

They had left the park after having exciting moments and walked hand in hand with Xander in their middle as they sang.
"Who lives in the pineapple under the sea?!" Lorelei sang, buzzing with happiness and marching down the street that led to their house with her two favorite people in the world.
"SpongeBob SquarePants!" Xander screamed, chuckling and swinging his head from side to side.
"Absorbant and yellow and porous is he!" Lei sang.
"SpongeBob SquarePants!" Xander beamed.
"If nautical nonsense be something you wish..." She sang, while she and Roman occasionally heaved Xander up.
"SpongeBob SquarePants!" Xander squealed.
They climbed up their porch and Roman opened the door, while they sang behind him.
"Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!" She tickled Xander and he giggled, dashing into the house when Roman pushed the door open.
"SpongeBob SquarePants!" Xander screamed, kicking off his shoes and jumping on the couch.
"Ready?!" She widened her eyes, grinning like the Cheshire cat.
Happiness resonated through her and Xander, and Roman couldn't help but join in by clapping his hands and dancing alongside Xander.
"SpongeBob SquarePants!"
"SpongeBob SquarePants!"
Xander and Lorelei chorused, dancing and clapping. Lorelei savored the feeling of contentment as she felt like they were a small happy family.
A knock on the door ceased their singing and Lorelei took off her coat. "I'll get it, that must be the nanny."
She pointed out. Lorelei had called the nanny on their way home from the park, asking her to swing by their house to pick up Xander.
Roman watched Xander jump down from the couch and run to hug the nanny.
"Sorry to cut your singing short." The nanny apologized with a smile and Lei waved her hand, saying it was nothing serious.
Roman waved at the nanny, returning her greeting with a hand sign. The nanny left with Xander, leaving Roman and Lei alone.
Roman's eyebrows slowly creased into a frown as he solemnly wondered why she sent Xander to the nanny.
"So..." Lei drawled, tugging on the strings of Roman's attention and he kept his eyes on her, watching her every move like a hawk. "... I just want to thank you for the love and kindness you've shown to my son and me."
Her eyes grew misty and he shook his head, demonstrating with his hands that she didn't have to say thank you.
"I'll do anything to keep you and papa bear happy." He gestured and she pouted, splaying her fingers over her chest.
"You see," She started, sitting on the couch and Roman lowered his buttocks beside her. "We've been mates for three months now..."
Lei drawled, forcefully swallowing saliva.
"And I must say that I enjoy being around you." She stated.
Roman's heart leaped.
"You've treated us so well-" she hesitated, thumbing her ear with worry lines forming on her head. "-but I still can't let you mark me because I still have my worries and-"
Roman pressed a finger to her lips, halting her in her tracks. He tilted her head so he could look into her eyes and two pairs of eyes blinked in unison as they stared at each other in silence with only the sounds of the ticking clock and their thumping hearts.
