Feeling the weather
I closed my eyes and heaved a sigh. I hate being sick. It slows down my day and makes me miss work. I'm just grateful today wasn't a working day. I might just go to work with a severe headache. I didn't like to miss a single day at the office. I had a feeling that my consistency and punctuality led me to be the boss at a young age.
Back then, I was always punctual to work because I would have to leave the house as early as possible to avoid hitting traffic. A couple of times, Id even be the first person to arrive at work. I used to think that perhaps the big boss had been monitoring my movements. Perhaps that was why out of all other older employees, he passed the company to me to take care of it and give him feedbacks.
After leaving the towel on my head for a while, mother removed it and repeated the same process of dipping, squeezing and placing the towel on my head again. After doing that for about three times, she asked me how I felt and I whispered I was feeling a bit better. Selena came in and said breakfast was ready. Mother asked her to call Sebastian so the three of us could have breakfast together.
I stood up with mothers help and she led me to the dining table. She made me sit on the chair close to hers. In front of me were a bowl of soup and another bowl of porridge. The food looked and smelled really good but I wasn't sure I'd be able to eat enough.
We waited for Sebastian to come down before we could have breakfast together, mothers wish. He walked down the stairs in a black sleeveless top which displayed his irresistible abs and some ash-colour sweatpants. I took my eyes off him immediately. I didn't want to admire him any longer so I wouldn't be charmed by his hotness or charming body. But if he's going to be eating at this dining table, it wasnt going to be making this any easier.
He greeted his mum and placed a kiss on her cheeks before sitting on the other side of his mum.
"Good morning, Jasmine" he greeted.
I was beyond shocked when I heard that. This was the first time he'd ever greeted me. Perhaps he's doing this because his mum is right in front of us. He wants her to think were okay.
"Good morning" I replied.
I noticed a bright smile on mothers face. She's probably thinking were getting used to each other. Oh mother, your thinking is so wrong, I thought to myself.
After he had settled down on his seat, we began to eat our meal. I took a spoonful of the porridge but it tasted so bland in my mouth. I didnt want to waste Selenas efforts so I took another spoonful. This time, it was even worse. It didn't seem to have any kind of taste in my mouth.
I knew the food was going to be delicious because of how it smelt. Its the fever thats keeping me from enjoying Selenas meal.
I dropped my spoon and decided to try the soup. If I can't eat the porridge, I should be able to drink the soup so I could regain some strength. I took a spoonful of the soup and I drank everything in my bowl. It didnt fill me up but I had to put something in my tummy so I don't go hungry.
"Dear, you didn't touch your porridge. Don't you like it?" Mother asked.
"No I love it actually. I just don't' have any appetite. I will eat it later maybe before I retire to bed tonight", I replied.
After staying with us for breakfast and asking me once again if she could drive me to the hospital, mother left the house.
I went back to my room to get some rest. I asked Selena to keep the porridge in the fridge and heat it up for me later at night. I stayed in bed, wishing for this sickness to go away so I could go to work on Monday.
Despite convincing mom that I was okay, she sent a doctor to the house to check up on me. He did a few things like check my eyes and temperature. He described some drugs and told me how to use them.
I thanked him and he left the house.
The next day which was a Sunday, I decided to sleep in. I woke up by 1 in the afternoon. I realized Id missed breakfast. I decided to have brunch. I told Selena to help me prepare some waffles. I watched her prepare the meal. She also prepared a cup of coffee when I complained that the weather was kind of chilly. I smeared some strawberry maple syrup on my waffles. I had a sweet tooth and strawberry also happens to my favourite fruit.
After having my brunch, I went back and lay in bed. I was only to sleep. Yet. I pulled out my phone from my jean pockets. I played some games on my phone till I grew tired.
I didnt know when I fell asleep but I was woken up by someone gently tapping my shoulder. I happened to be a light-sleeper. It was Selena who woke me up.
“Dinner is ready, dear. Come have dinner so you can use your medications, she said, gently and like a mother to her small child. I didnt want to get up. I was feeling so weak and exhausted despite not having any work done.
Can I please have my dinner brought up to me? I really dont feel like getting up now. I might just collapse if I tried, I replied weakly.
Oh sorry, child. How insensitive of me. Why didnt I think about that? she said.
Ill be right back, dear, she said, leaving the door.
I placed my pillow on the headboard and rested my head on it, waiting for Selenas return. Soon, she was back with a tray and napkins. I thanked her as she exited the room.
I opened the cover plates and tantalizing smell of good food wafted in the air. I looked into my plate and what I saw surprised me. It was Chicken Tetrazzini. It was my favourite food when I was living with Nana and Papa. It was made with cooked but shredded chicken, spaghetti noodles, chopped green pepper, diced white onion and chicken broth.
Whenever I was sick or upset, Nana would cheer me up by preparing Chicken Tetrazzini. Shed also make me a cup of juice and that would just brighten my whole day. I wondered how Selena knew I loved Chicken Tetrazzini. Maybe it was just a lucky guess or a coincidence.
I salivated and with so much vigour; I picked up my spoon, took a spoonful of the tantalizing chicken tetrazzini and placed it in my mouth. OMG! The food was so yummy. A lone tear escaped my eyes as I'm reminded of Nana and Papa once more.
I rushed my food and I nearly choked on it. Soon I was done with my dinner. I kept the tray on my bedside table and picked up my medicine canister. It was just a little tin box where I kept all my medications so they don't go missing.
I popped the right amount of medicine into my mouth and down. I lay on my bed and hoped Id feel much better the following day.
