Blueberry pancakes

The rest of my day went well. Mae and I got to know more about each other and we promised to be and remain close friends. Mae and Beth would really get along, I thought. My thoughts went straight to Beth.
Beth wanted to come over to visit me but she got an important call from her parents to come home for an urgent family dinner so she couldnt make it but when she got back home late at night, she called me on Skype. She rendered her sincere apologies on not being able to make it to my house to see me.
She asked about my health and how much shed missed me at work today. She told me the family dinner was held because her older brother brought home his girlfriend of 2 years and they wanted to start planning their wedding.
Her brother, Clyde, was not lucky when it came to love. His exes left him for little or no reason at all. Imagine leaving someone because hes too kind and protective. I guess hes lucky to be getting married to this one now. I was happy for him and his family. I saw her tired face through the screen even though she tried to conceal it with a smile and I felt sorry for her. She had to travel over a long distance just to meet with her brothers fiancée. It was really sweet of her.
She loved her brother so much even though they were of different mothers. Beths father married Clydes mother when they were still young and knew nothing. They just knew they were in love so they had a child. Not long, Clydes mother died after Clyde became 3 years old. After years of mourning, Beths father decided to remarry and he married Beth's mother.
Before Beths mother conceived, she took care of Clyde like she was her own. When she gave birth to Beth, she loved both children equally. They didnt know that they werent of the same mother until the day Beth found Clyde's birth certificate.
Clyde and Beth were heartbroken to find out they werent from the same mother and for a period of one year, they were apart. They didnt talk to each other or visit each other. It was so bad that Beth was not herself through out that year.
Their parents both called them home to celebrate Christmas as a family and that was the day they fixed their issues. They were both angry at their parents that they hid the truth from them and they confessed to avoiding each other because they didnt know how theyd relate with each other after finding out the truth.
Well, now theyre in good terms. Beth even told me Clyde asked her to her his best man. I laughed at that but deep down, I was happy they had gotten over the fact that they weren't 100 per cent related.
Theyre now as close as they used to be.
Well, hows going over there with Mr Handsome? she said wiggling her eyebrows teasingly.
She had been teasing me ever since I told her how I felt the last time I went into Sebastians room and found him shirtless. She decided to start calling him Mr Handsome because she thinks that I might be in love with him and she wouldnt want to call her best friends husband a scallywag. Trust me; she calls him that when its just the two of us.
Hes still the same. I hate him even more now. I spent my precious time in the kitchen trying to cook a meal for me and everyone else and he wouldnt even have a taste. He just lets my food go to waste, I said angrily.
Beth burst into laughter on the phone and I looked at her blankly wondering what she could possibly be laughing at.
What? I asked her. Is someone upset that Mr Handsome didnt get to eat her food and compliment her cooking? Did you want to hear a sweet compliment from him? Beth asked, almost laughing and pouting her mouth mockingly.
Stop it Beth; its not funny, I said, tears threatening to fall from my eyes because she said the truth. Was I really expecting Sebastian to eat my food and give me a compliment? Did I really prepare lunch because I wanted to please Sebastian and impress him? I asked myself these questions.
Girl, are you crying? Beth asked and I touched my cheeks and felt dampness. I wiped my face and got rid of all tears.
No, I'm not, I replied. Girl, you are. Dont destroy your own happiness for a man who doesnt even realize that you are here. I hate seeing you like this. If youre hurting, you know Ill hurt too, she said. There was a long silence.
I know this marriage isnt what you wanted or wished for, but Ill advice you to stay calm and live the best life you can. Dont let any man break you. Youre one of the strongest women I know. Youve gone through things worse than this. Ill always be there for you, girl, she said, her voice getting wobbly, like she was about to cry too.
Thanks Beth, I love you, I said.
I love you too, girl. You know you wouldnt do without me, right? she said, jokily.
Yes, youre the best friend I could ever ask for. I couldnt replace you with anything else in this world even if I wanted to, I said and both of us chuckled.
Yeah, you cant. Well, its high time I go to bed, Boss. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow, she said. Go to bed? I thought. Why would she want to go to bed by this time? Isnt it too early? I checked the time on my laptop and saw it was already 10 p.m. I didnt know the time ran so fast.
Bye, Beth. See you at work tomorrow, I replied.
I switched off my laptop and climbed up my bed. I covered my body with the blankets, the weather was a bit chilly and I didnt want to wake up the next day feeling sick again.
