Chapter 10

The week passed by in a blur and for the first time in a long time, she felt herself relax, even at work. She arrived early, opened the building herself, and made herself some coffee for the first time in forever. She took the stress away from her employees, and felt a good nature come over her, she decided to shift hours a little bit. She shocked everyone with new work hours. She gave everyone the option of a one-hour lunch break or standard thirty minutes plus, two fifteen-minute stress breaks. New end times were posted in the community lounge.
The workday would end at 3 pm. Giving people ample time to finish their day and return home to their families rather than working until 6 pm. Velaria also put into place new raises at the beginning of the year
“Each year, an employee shares an anniversary to this company, rather than receiving your raised of fifty cents, new raise program will award each employee on their anniversary a dollar raise”
“Staff will now receive a Christmas bonus of up to twenty percent of their income and paid holiday vacation.” She added a note “If you have children who are on Christmas break from school and would like to have a paid holiday vacation to be home with your family, please let HR know in advance.”
“Furthermore, after the new year holiday, please take your lunch break outside of the building, the workers lunchroom will be going through remodeling, it will be a community lounge where employees if they wish can arrive head of schedule, socialize and have coffee before starting the workday. I am also remodeling unused space to be a company fitness room. Also note, if many of you recall downstairs on the main floor, there was once a large room there that once had purposed many years ago, which was being rented out by a smaller company, over time the company closed down and the large area was closed off, then ignored. I am happy to say, we are going to finally put it good use, it is going to be remodeled, and open as a restaurant style cafeteria for employee use”

The more she thought about it, the better she felt. She is very wealthy even for her age, the company is highly successful, she cannot see a reason why everyone should not enjoy a bit more rest and relaxation at home with loved ones. She would be the one to stay and work extra hours. It was her duty as the CEO of the company. After she had finished with all of the changes. She sent out mass emails to every employee, she also posted some of the announcements in the office. She giggled to herself when suddenly, she heard shouts of joy and happiness. The workers were over the moon thrilled with what was to come in the next year. She felt like nothing could change the way she was feeling. It was Wednesday, and she felt very accomplished. Her employees all wore smiles and were raving about the news.
Her secretary, called her, reminding her about the Salkton meeting.
She immediately arose from her seat in her office. Straightened her tailored suit so it was perfect and walked towards the conference room.

What I find when I walk in, knocks my solar plexus off its course. I cannot speak, I cannot think, and I cannot look away from the furious familiar eyes that now stare back at me like I am the biggest bitch he has ever seen in his life, suddenly there is a trace of humor in his eyes. I square my shoulders and begin to compose myself. “Mr. Salkton, thank you for meeting with me, I am Ms. Connors”
I smile at him, hoping he will be civil. His eyes flash, there is humor, and do I detect a challenge?”
“Ms. Connors, I am honored to meet you, I pray that joining will be a pleasurable experience” he says with heavy innuendo on the “joining” and pleasurable” I have to calm myself before I find myself being worked up over this man. It was just a one-night stand, nothing more.
“Yes, I do hope we can accomplish much together” I smile. We share more conversation, until someone else walks in and my world turns into a nightmare.
“Ms. Connors I will like you to meet my second in command Mark Ellis”
The minute my eyes lock with him, it is like something takes over me, everything that happened to me comes back and hits me like a thousand-pound sledgehammer. I shrink back like I am being electrocuted.

Those same eyes, that promised love forever after one moment turned into a monstrous savage that nearly ended my life. I cannot stop the flood of pain he put me through. He takes in my appearance, and I can see the chilling shock in those eyes, his eyes turn furious, but it only adds to the blood-curdling scream coming from my throat. Mr. Salkton is looking terrified, not understanding what is going on, he looks like my screaming is causing him pain. I continue to shrink back towards the door unable to tear my eyes away from Mark.

He has a smirk on his face which does not go unnoticed by Mr. Salkton, his eyes seem to be laughing “how did I not kill you” it becomes too much. I start to throw my heels at Mark, he catches them both. He takes a step toward me, and I run from my conference room screaming in terror. I need to get the hell out of here, I do not want to nearly die again!
