Chapter 38

The thunderous boom reverberated through the sanctum like the beat of some primordial war drum. Karl was instantly airborne, his chiseled figure coiling with predatory menace as a deep, guttural snarl ripped from his powerful chest.

Lexi felt the shockwave of his feral shift rippling outward like a physical force. Her own wolf stirred in instinctive response, muscles tensing in preparation for combat before her rational mind could intercede.

With eerie calm amidst the maelstrom of his feral response, Karl stretched out one corded arm to create an impenetrable bulwark between Lexi and whatever threat had breached their sanctuary. His obsidian gaze laser-locked on the arched entrance as another resonant crash shuddered through the very foundations.

"Stay behind me," hebit out in a tone better suited to grind rock than shape words. The command brooked no argument, saturated as it was with the uncompromising dominance of the alpha undeterred.

Yet in the next breath, a series of lighter impacts and scurrying echoes reached Lexi's preternaturally attuned senses. Her eyes widened fractionally as her nostrils flared with realization.

"Karl, wait," she managed in a tone of utmost serenity despite the boiling unrest swirling through their bond.

With a savage rumble of clear negation, he inched infinitesimally closer, harnessing every ounce of his intimidating presence like a battering ram against the unknown. Lexi hurriedly laid a quelling hand against his outthrust arm, marveling at the sinewy cohesion of muscle and sinew that refused to yield even an inch beneath her restraining touch.

"Look closer, my alpha," she murmured, permitting a hint of gentle reproach as well as reassurance to lace her words.

For an endless breath, his chiseled figure remained locked in that rigor of blind ferocity. Then, almost imperceptibly at first, the towering wall of his wrath began to erode as reason and perception filtered back in. Another series of skittering impacts heralded yet more furry shapes barreling through the archway, precipitating a low, bemused rumble from deep within Karl's chest.

One by one, a kaleidoscope of dappled pelts and erratically wiggling snouts filtered through the entrance, squeaking and chittering with what could only be interpreted as joyous abandon. Behind her muzzled entourage, the steady, placid regard of the packs' medicine woman emerged, one faded eyebrow quirked in vague chastisement.

"You bellowed for healing assistance," she reminded Karl in a dry, patient tone that hinted at frequent need for such reminders. "I took the summons rather too literally, it seems. My humblest apologies for the...excessive exuberance of my diminutive honor guard."

As if on cue, one of the smallest critters went bounding past its brethren only to smack face-first into the unforgiving barrier of Karl's partially extended leg. Rather than retreat, it unleashed an ear-piercing squeak of indigent protest, stubbornly clambering higher until it crested the rise of his combat boot.

Only then did it seem to perceive the towering, onyx-eyed threat glowering down with ever-growing bemusement. It froze in a comically frozen tableau for a single breath, tail twitching...before toppling backward off the precipice of leather with a final aggrieved cheep.

Despite herself, Lexi was helpless against the peal of surprised laughter that bubbled up from her core. Never in a million lifetimes could she have anticipated such an...unorthodox interruption to the fraught solemnities lingering between her and Karl. The comedic mundanity of it smoothed the crease between her eyes, loosening her tensed muscles with the unstoppable torrent of mirth.

Gradually, the richness of her husky feminine laughter seemed to permeate the bone-deep pall of Karl's suspicion. She sensed the incremental relaxation through their bond, the fissures appearing in his defensive ferocity as surely as the rays of dawn seeped through shuttered drapes.

One by one, the small pack of woodland creatures arrayed at their feet--squirrels, chipmunks, even what appeared to be a ring-tailed cat--scampered nearer with eager chatterings. Some inspected the gleaming toes of Karl's scoffed boots with emboldened interest, utterly oblivious to the dire potential for violence in his slow, sidelong perusal.

Still others whipped around Lexi's ankles in a dizzying flurry of motion and soft fur, slowing only to fix her with round, questioning gazes before streaking off again in their erratic orbits. It was as if their diminutive antics were as purposeful as sorcery...chipping away at that armor of savage ferocity layer by infinitesimal layer.

Little by little, Lexi sensed the maelstrom of Karl's instinctive aggression bleeding away in favor of bewildered tolerance. With it faded the tightly wound menace in his fighting lean, granting her cauterizing glimpses of the tender, keenly insightful soul he kept shrouded beneath that bannerless exterior.

It was in one of those fleeting, unguarded moments that their eyes locked across the chaotic tableau separating them.

It was in one of those fleeting, unguarded moments that their eyes locked across the chaotic tableau separating them. Lexi felt the world around her grind to a halt, every outside stimulus receding until there was nothing but the molten, haunted depths of Karl's regard upending her very core.
In that breath, she witnessed the savage alpha's defenses part like storm clouds dispersing before the radiance of the dawn. Just as swiftly, a different creature entirely was laid bare in their soul-searing connection. One comprised of the raw, sensitive hunger of a lone wolf seeking its mate...its other half after centuries adrift in the wasteland of bitter solitude.
Lexi's breath hitched, her senses overwhelmed by a deluge of Karl's unshackled emotions as they flooded their bond in searing tantality. Pain, fear, loss, and a soul-deep yearning for the absolution only she could provide...they swamped her in their ferocious intensity until she felt swept away by the riptide.
Unconsciously, her feet propelled her forward until they were mere footfalls apart. Close enough that the scorching fever of Karl's body heat enveloped her like a visceral embrace. His granite features had grown taut with vulnerability, eyelids weighted by an indecipherable melange of emotions he could no longer contain behind those punishing barriers.
"Lexi..." It was little more than a rasping whisper, yet it resounded like the peal of thunder between them. A plea...and a surrender, all
inlaid.
She opened her mouth to respond, to offer the comfort and achingly tender reassurances for which her mate's soul had starved for far too long. But before a single syllable could emerge, a strident commotion erupted from just beyond the archway. A stampede of approaching footfalls and shrill, high-pitched voices sliced through their immersive connection like a blade severing invisible threads.
By the time Lexi whipped around to seek the threat's source, her mate had already reverted in the space of a indrawn breath. Transformed back into that cold, snarling alpha whose formidable presence saturated every plane and surface with its bristling, potent menace.
His defensive stance was instantly restored, shoulders thrown back and tendons outlined in stark relief beneath his bronzed skin as he harnessed that seething torrent of power once more. And in his eyes...in his eyes flickered a banked jade-black blaze all too chillingly familiar to Lexi from previous glimpses into her mate's volcanic fury.
With a sinuous, implacable movement, Karl shifted until Lexi's body was shielded fully behind the corded rampart of his. A clear challenge radiated outward with every fiber of his being, daring whatever unwitting fool dared to threaten the sanctity of his den or dishonor the vulnerable communion he had briefly permitted.
The first wave of beta sentries materialized at that moment, eyes wide and nostrils flared with the musk of fear and uncertainty as their alpha's displeasure washed over them like an arctic torrent.
