CHAPTER 37: Finding The One
KATE’s P.O.V.
“Why didn’t you accept the offer?” Fiona complained.
I sighed, before facing her. We are now at our boarding house, and we just finished eating our dinner. Fiona didn’t stop bugging me about that deal that I refused to accept earlier.
“Fiona, you know how much I really wanted to come back right there... But I couldn’t. I don’t know if I’m ready to face him again.”
“That doesn’t matter! All that’s important right now is that you’ve promise to him that you’ll come back right after you find yourself... And now, fate is making your way back into his arms. Don’t you think it was pretty ironic? You already have a perfectly reason and chance to see him again.”
“But how about Dom? Do you want him to be a broken hearted guy?” I asked her, and she suddenly shut her mouth up.
I turned around, picking up the plates on our table just to wash the dishes.
“If that’s what will make you happy, then why not? Dom is... He’s nice and perfect but I think you deserve more... You deserve that guy you’re telling me about...”
I sighed, unable to say another word.
“Besides... You already admitted it yourself... Dom is just a rebound for you... Don’t you think he deserves someone that’s going to love him without any hesitation?” I could hear the sadness in her voice.
“I...” I trailed off. “I guess your right, Fiona. Dominic deserves more. Though, even if I already let him go, I’m still not sure if I will be able to face Elijah on my own.”
I looked down, feeling sorry for myself. But I stopped, as I heard the enthusiasm and encouragement in Fiona’s voice.
“You already done it before, right? You can do it again, Kate. I believe in you.”
“Thanks,” I smiled at her.
“You know, the director told me that if ever you changed your mind, you can always call her any time.”
“Sure... I’ll think about it.”
She just smiled widely at me before helping me in washing the dishes. After we finished doing the household chores, we finally came inside of our own respective bedrooms before I took a quick shower. All I wanted to have right now is a peaceful sleep before I think about that offer.
But I couldn’t do it. Thinking about what Fiona had told me earlier, it hit me so hard. I left Elijah hanging back in that country without any assurance that I’m going to come back someday. He said he’ll wait, but I don’t know if he can still endure the pain after all these years. He probably got married and build his own family... No, I should stop over thinking about those things. Elijah promised, and I trust him.
After hours of thinking, I finally slept. The next thing I knew, I was awakened by the sound of my phone ringing on my bedside table. It was already morning, and I instantly picked up my phone.
I looked at the name of the caller. It was Mom. I smiled, thinking that maybe she’s calling me to inform me that they already booked their flight to Paris for this weekend. It was scheduled that they’re going to visit me here.
“Hi, Mom...” I smiled to myself.
“Kate...” I felt nervous, hearing her bothered voice.
“Mom? Are you alright? You sound... Bothered.”
“I’m afraid your Dad and I couldn’t make it there this weekend.”
I felt saddened by the news, but i’m still worried about the way Mom’s voice sounded like. I badly wanted to ask her the reason why.
“Why? Are you okay? Is something happened?” I asked.
“Your Dad... He’s uhm... He got hospitalized, Kate.”
“What?! Is he okay? How is he? Do you want me to come home?”
She took a deep breath, hearing those series of questions coming from me.
“I think he’s fine. Don’t worry, Kate. You don’t need to come home right here. I know you’re busy. I’ll call you every time for an update.”
“Sure, Mom. Please don’t think too much about this weekend. I’ll be fine... Just take care of Dad.”
“Alright... Thank you so much for your understanding. Bye, sweetie, I love you.”
“I love you too, Mom. Please take care.”
She dropped the call, and then I sighed. I wasn’t even a bit affected by the fact that Mom and Dad wouldn’t come here anymore. As long as they are healthy and safe, then I’ll be fine.
Today, I decided to talk to Dominic about what Fiona suggested me to do. I’m going to break up with him. Not because he’s not enough, but because I knew it to myself that I’m not the right woman for him. He deserves better... Someone like Fiona, I guess.
“Where are you going?” she asked, as soon as she saw me wearing a coat. “It’s Friday... It’s my day off. You should've told me that you wanted to go somewhere so–”
“Shhh...” I cut her statement off. “I’m fine. You should stay here and enjoy your day off. I’m just going to see someone.”
“Who?” she asked curiously.
“Dom.”
She shut her mouth after I said that. She looked away, blushing. When she didn’t say anything back to me, I decided to bid her my goodbyes before I leave our boarding house.
On the way to my car, I texted Dom that I wanted to see him, and thankfully, he accepted my invitation. Since his house is just a few meters away from the shop I’m talking about, that gave him enough time to prepare himself.
I drove to that shop for almost half of an hour before I finally arrived. There, I saw Dom sitting at the bench while holding another bouquet of roses just for me. I stepped out of the car, and his face suddenly lit up seeing me as I walked towards his direction.
“For you...” He gave me the flowers, and I smiled timidly. “Where do you want us to go?”
“I’m fine here... Dom, I need I tell you something,” I stated nervously.
Finding the one wasn’t that easy in this country specially when I already got a special someone way back in the Philippines. And even though Elijah isn’t waiting for me anymore, I wouldn’t regret this decision of mine to find myself first before I love anyone else. Because believed me, I already learned a lot of things in life in just five years in time.
“What is that?” he asked, his voice sounded like worried but he’s still trying his best to smile at me.
“I hate to break this out to you, but... I’m sorry, Dom. I don’t deserve you... You deserve someone else. Someone better. A person that could fully love you... And I believed that someone wasn’t me, Dom. Because... I already love someone else...”
“Kate, what are you talking about?” he asked, looking depressed and heart broken.
He reached for my hand, but I avoided it. I don’t want him to feel anymore connection towards me. I don’t want to hurt him anymore. Having him by my side for almost two years without me thinking why I gave him a chance is already enough. I don’t want him to suffer in pain anymore.
“I’m sorry, Dom... I’m breaking up with you...”
“What? But why? Did I do something wrong? I don’t care about anything else, Kate... As long as I got you. Tell me what I need to change and I’ll do it... I’ll do anything for you...” he almost pleaded.
“Sorry, Dom. Don’t think that it was you, because it’s all me. I failed as your girlfriend, and I’m sorry...”
He sat down, looking broke. I patted his shoulder before putting down the bouquet of roses beside him.
“Bye, Dom. I hope you find that someone I’m talking about...”
And without any more words, I left him there before walking away. I felt guilty, though it was with a relief. Seeing him saddened by the fact that I broke his heart is way better than letting him pretend that he’s satisfied with me. He deserves someone better. More like somebody like Fiona.
