*****CHAPTER 51
ALCOT'S POV
“We should go,” I said to her and she nodded and slowly disentangled her body from mine. Even though I didn't want to let go of her body just yet and preferred she lay her head on my shoulders forever, I didn't want to sound selfish either. There were more pressing matters than my stupid feelings.
“I need to go see my Mother” She informed me as I led the way out of the market.
“Okay,” I nodded with a sigh. “Can I come along?”
At first, she stared at me for a moment as though I had said the craziest thing in the world. A few seconds later, she shook her head in disagreement.
“I would like to go alone, my Lord."
"I want to come along." I insisted.
She gave me one last look and seeing that I was dead serious, she gave up with a sigh.
When we arrived at the physician's, I stood outside the ward while Mae rushed inside to meet her mother and sisters. The physician came out as well, to give them some privacy and as he made to walk past me, I asked him, stopping him to his feet.
"How much money are we looking at here?"
At first, the physician stared at me in confusion and I spoke again to make him understand me better. He didn't know I was the Alpha. No one knew I was the Alpha except Mae.
"The cost of the woman's treatment. How much is it?"
The physician eyed me from the top of my head, down to the soles of my feet, obviously judging me and trying to confirm if I was serious or not.
"A thousand silver coins. Why?"
I didn't reply to him. Instead, I dipped my hand into the pocket of my trouser and pulled out a royal check. I scribbled the amount he mentioned into the check and tore it out when I was done, handing it to him.
The man's brow furrowed even deeper in a puzzled frown as he collected the check from me. His eyes flew open in shock upon seeing the amount and the royal stamp on the check. His protruded eyes snapped back to me and he stared at me like he had just come across a criminal.
"Don't worry. I work in the palace. I'm royal blood." I lied and the man took another couple of seconds to analyze my entire frame, as if to catch a lie, before he finally pocketed the cheque and nodded at me.
"Right. We shall proceed with her treatment immediately then."
"Alright." I nodded at the physician before he walked away and back into the ward. A few minutes later, Mae barged out of the ward, her eyes on me, confused and teary at the same time.
“You… paid off the money." It was more of a statement than a question.
I only gave a nonchalant shrug in reply. That big mouthed physician! I should have warned him to keep his mouth shut in the first place.
“You shouldn't have." She gulped and her eyes traveled down to her feet for a few seconds before she looked up at me again. "But I am grateful to you. You just saved my mother's life.”
Again, I shrugged. This time, with a sigh. I hated when people showed gratitude to me. It made me feel embarrassed.
Unexpectedly, Mae collided her body against mine in a tight hug, her arms wrapped feebly against me. I gently rubbed against her back lightly as she did so.
"Thank you, Alcot." She whispered to me. "I'll forever be grateful."
"It's nothing." I finally replied, bringing my hand to her hair and rubbing against it lightly.
The door of the ward opened again and a young lady stepped out. She looked a bit like Mae but a little older. From the way she looked at Mae and me in puzzle, I was sure she was the oldest sister.
Seeing her sister, Mae quickly disentangled herself from my body. The older sister however, had a cunning smile playing on her lips.
"You've got a boyfriend now? Is he that friend of yours who sends you later?" She directed her questions to Mae who eyed her defensively.
But before Mae's older sister could say something else, the physician came out of the ward to rejoin us. He had a piece of paper in his hand and he pushed it to Mae's hand.
“Can you go downtown and have this delivered to Marrison's ward? It's the recommended herb for your mother. Can you pick them up for me?"
"Sure." Mae did not hesitate to pocket the paper in her cloak. From the look of things, she was trying to avoid answering her sister's question.
"Hi. I'm Alcot." I threw a smile at Mae's sister's way and extended my hand in a handshake, ignoring Mae's warning glare.
Mae's sister reciprocated my smile and shook my hand briefly.
"The name's Snow."
"You have a beautiful name." I complimented her. "Just like the rest of your sisters."
"Oh. Really?" I could see her cheeks redden in a blush.
"What are you doing?" Mae whispered beside me but I ignored her. I was enjoying myself so much.
"Are you and my sister dating?" Snow asked me, her eyes twinkling in anticipation.
"Hopefully, real soon, Snow. I can't wait to be a brother-in-law to you. I think we would make a fine family."
"Fuck!" Mae cursed this time and I almost laughed at how this was getting to her. "Let's go." She grabbed me by the arm and pulled me out of the room.
"Where are you taking me to? I want to spend time with your sister. She seems sweet and kind." I was controlling myself from bursting into laughter now.
"The physician's, Alcot. We're going to the Marrison's."
"Together?" I asked, feigning confusion.
"Yes. I can't make it to Marrison's alone. It's not a safe road for a lady." She briefed me as we walked ahead. "Plus, Snow is no sweetheart. She is a bitch. Don't let those sweet gestures deceive you."
"Oh." I mouthed. For a second, I was sure she forgot I was the Alpha and treated me like Alcot.
I smiled to myself.
I wish it would keep being this way forever. Just Alcot and Mae. Not the Alpha, servant relationship.
