Chapter 30: Beginning Of A crazy Week
Chapter Thirty
“Yeah, I thought it was crazy too, but I guess they don’t keep any valuables there or anything. So yeah, the cabin’s free for anyone to use.”
Duke thinks about it for a while longer, and at that moment, the food arrives. Once the server disappears again, he’s wearing a large smirk and nodding his head at me.
“You’re a bad girl,Sophia , but that’s just what I like about you,” he says while stabbing his fork into his pasta. “This is perfect because I could use a relaxing weekend away. I’m just going to kick back, relax, and live like a king. And best of all, it’s free.” Then, he takes a huge bite of his pasta while I nod enthusiastically.
“Right? I mean, we’ll clean up after ourselves, and I’m going to get Sassy a really nice gift when her birthday rolls around to make up for it. But yeah, I think this is a good opportunity for us,” I enthuse while taking a bite of my salad. Ugh. The leaves are practically flavorless, dry, and not all appetizing with no dressing of any sort, but I still smile while chewing enthusiastically.
After all, Duke’s romised to pop a certain cherry of mine soon. He didn’t say when, but I’m hoping it’ll be during our romantic getaway. Of course, I’ve had boyfriends in the past, but we never did that, and my bottom clenches in anticipation. I’ve heard that it can feel amazing, and I can’t wait to try.
Still,Dukes really annoying. Of course, people have told me that he’s no good, and that I can do better, but for now, I just want to focus on getting my ass cherry taken. So much in fact that I want to get down to business this weekend, and pray that my boyfriend can deliver when it comes time to perform.
I just hope that Sassy, or even worse, Sassys dad, doesn’t show up because that would be sheer disaster. Sassy showed me a graduation photo once, and of course my friend was cute, but it was the man in the picture with her that made me gasp because Mr Xander was gorgeous. He was huge, tall, and imposing with broad shoulders and a fierce scowl. Even more, my body grew hot just seeing the photo because a man with large, rough hands like Mr. Xander probably has a large you-know-what too. But I put it out of my mind because the last person I want to see right now is Mr.Xander , especially since we’ll be using his cabin without his knowledge.
“See, I told you it would be unlocked!” I smile as I push the front door of the Xander cabin open. Duke strolls in ahead of me and starts looking around as I close the door behind us.
Yeah, I guess it’s okay,” he says in a noncommittal tone. “It could be nicer, but I’ll survive.”
I roll my eyes behind his back because this place is great. It’s not super-huge, but it’s a good-sized cabin. The living area is decorated with heavy wooden furniture with red-cloth cushions. There’s a shaggy maroon rug in the center of the floor, plenty of pillows and blankets scattered about, and cheery plaid drapes. The wood and red theme is simple, but honestly, it goes well together and I like the laid-back vibe.
I drag our suitcases toward the corner of the living area and start unpacking immediately, starting with our shoes to place near the entrance. I’m expecting Duke to help out, but after a few seconds, I turn to look back at him and see him still looking around slowly. I’d like to think that he’s staring at the décor in amazement, speechless from how much he likes the place, but I can see from the small frown on his face that it’s probably the opposite.
“What is that?” he demands, his chin jutting out.
I follow his gaze and smile when I see what exactly caught his attention. There’s a big deer head mounted to the wall, and I nod.
“Sassy told me that her dad,Xander , really loves to hunt, so he must have caught that himself.”
Duke sniffs and clears his throat as he continues looking around, a small scowl on his face as he does. “It’s different from what I thought it’d be like,” he grumbles.
I let out a small sigh through my nose as my stomach drops. “Different how? Like in a bad way? You don’t like it?”
Duke shrugs.
“I was expecting something …I don’t know, a huge roaring fire, and a vaulted ceiling with wooden rafters. Big overstuffed couches, and not this furniture which is obviously worn. Plus, you know I’m not into taxidermy. That deer’s eyes freak me out.”
I gape at my boyfriend as he sighs and plops down onto the couch, kicking his feet up onto the coffee table. What the hell?
“Well, this is someone’s actual hunting cabin, and not a fancy hotel like the Ahwahnee out in Yosemite. This place wasn’t built by hedge fund guys or anything like that. In fact, we’re actually staying for free.”
Duke shrugs and I cringe as I see dirt falling from his boots onto the previously clean table.
“Yeah, I know,” he cuts me off. “By the way, do you mind getting me a cold beer, babe? I assume there’s some in the fridge.”
I stare at him for a few moments, feeling a strange mix of annoyance and pure disbelief bubbling up inside me. One of my biggest pet peeves is being cut off when I’m speaking, and Duke does it all the time. And only to say the most unimportant things at that. Can I get him a beer? God, it’s so annoying. Besides, doesn’t he see me trying to unpack? It’s not like he’s trying to help me get us settled in, so couldn’t he just grab his own beer instead of asking me to do it while I’m busy?
