Chapter 27: An Affair

I kept wondering why Maurice had taken my ring. It was really strange. I needed to figure out why he had taken it and soon. Something was definitely off with him. I had lost any trust I used to have with Maurice.

The night before I hadn’t been able to sleep well. Too many thoughts went through my mind. I especially wondered if we would find the killer of Zander’s parents.

Everything we knew still wasn’t enough to solve the crime. I wondered if we missed evidence of this mystery. Suddenly, a knock came on my suite door.

I opened the door, and Zander motioned for me to follow him. He led me back to the room he was staying in. I wondered what he was up to.

We hadn’t discussed doing any more snooping around. I was ready to do more but was guilty of doing it at Ash’s pack. It wasn’t his fault that his pack was full of secrets.

When we got arrived at his room, he turned to face me.

“Cleo, I think we need to search Maurice’s office. I bet he has more evidence about my parents and Jenny." He added, "It’s also weird that his wife was close with my father, especially since they were old flames.”

“How will we get into his office?”

I was sure Maurice wouldn’t just let us search his office so easily. He was obviously hiding something from the whole pack. He did want us to stop investigating after all.

Zander grinned and said, “You distract him, and I’ll sneak in there and look around.”

“Fine. I’ll do it but hurry in there.”

I headed towards Maurice’s office and found that the door was open and peeked in. He wasn’t in the office and the lights were off. It was surprising that he left it open.

One pack member walked by in the hallway. I asked, “Is Maurice out for the day?”

“Oh, he went out on Alpha business. Why do you want to know?”

“I was just looking for him and wondered where he was.”

The member walked on. I waited until the member walked away and got out my phone. Quickly, I texted Zander to come to the office.

Zander arrived at the office shortly after I texted. He turned on the light switch and started searching for more evidence about Jenny and his parents.

I suspected Maurice knew the truth of what happened years ago. Maurice made me suspicious by avoiding answering my questions the other day. He didn’t want us looking into it which was not normal.

What was being hidden? We were so close to the truth. Zander could have his justice for his parents soon.

I snapped out of my thoughts and heard Zander’s voice. He exclaimed, “I found this letter in his drawer at the bottom. He wrote it to my dad.”

“What does it say?”

He held his breath and looked disappointed. My heart hurt for whatever he had seen in the letter.

Zander read, “I know what you did Mr. Underwood. You’ve been sleeping with my wife. This is a sin that I need to end. You won’t get away with this despicable act. I’m going to eliminate both of you as if none of this happened.”

My mouth dropped open at the realization. I took every detail in. Everything led to Maurice being the killer. He murdered his own wife. That made me feel nauseous.

The letter revealed what he intended to do, so there was no questioning his guilt. The letter had no stamp, though he had clearly intended to send it.

I waited and said, “Your dad was having an affair with Jenny and Maurice found out. He killed Jenny and your dad shortly after. I can’t believe this murder happened, and then he put the blame on a Rogue who doesn’t exist.”

Zander stayed silent for a moment and reread the letter again. He shook his head and put a finger to his lips in thought. What was he trying to figure out?

A puzzled look came to Zander's face and he said, “But what happened to my mom? Why was she killed too? She didn’t cheat.”

I shrugged and wondered the same thing. She seemed innocent in the situation. Her husband was the cheater ,not her. I felt bad for Zander’s mom going through that.

What had she done wrong? There was something missing from what we knew. We weren’t done searching for evidence yet.

We looked through more drawers. It was looking bleak for a little bit. I hoped we’d find the last piece of information, or else we'd never solve what happened to Zander's mom.

A few minutes later, Zander found a long note. He came to stand beside me and showed me it.

“Shit. This note is about your mom. It says that she tried to reveal the truth and had to be taken out. He couldn’t have anyone finding out what really happened.”

Zander growled and hit the table with his fist. “Maurice has to pay for what he did.”

I got worried at his reaction. Would he really take on an Alpha? I didn’t want him to put himself into danger or get killed. Maurice wasn’t going to be easy to fight against.

Zander stood next to me and looked me in the eyes, “I want to take this son of a bitch out. But I won’t do it yet, because you’ll be in danger. I don’t want you to get harmed.” He took deep breath and asked, “What should we do?”

I was glad he cared about me. I knew I could defend myself as a future Alpha but didn’t want to have to fight against Maurice. I hoped to avoid any bloodshed.

I looked at Zander and said, “We’ll have to run away from here and get back to my pack. We should be safe there.”

“Okay. Let’s get packing now and do it discreetly. We can’t let away see us leaving.”

We headed off to our rooms to get ready to leave. I prepared myself for our escape and hoped that we could sneak away unnoticed.
