Doubt
Nimah hesitatingly walked out of the house as she approached the cab, her mind running unstable. She could hear her heart in her ears.
She peeked at the driver who sat at the driver's seat I'm the cab, just like the man that drove her school bus, the man was putting on a set of clothes that looked like a uniform. He was on a white shirt and black pants with a black cap on his head.
The driver bent his head a bit, looking at her through the car's window. "Please come in!" The man said requestingly.
She took a hesitant step forward as she opened the cab's door and moved in, sitting properly and she ordered the driver to take off. Ms. Alicia waved at her and she waved back, sending a smile.
"Straight to McCain estate, you will drop me at the Greenwood street, before young Smith bakery." She explained to the Cab man but instead of the man to respond, he only chuckled.
"Young lady, I guess this is your first time of taking an ordered cab." The man said questioningly as he took off.
"What do you mean?" Nimah raised her brow.
"I already know your destination, it's been sent to me. So you need to tell me anything."
"And what if the road I chose to follow to my destination isn't mentioned? You only know that I need to get to Paddington Villa, but the plan has changed." Nimah responded, not wanting to sound irritated but she did.
"Has it really changed?" The driver looked back at Nimah.
"Yes it has!" Nimah nodded. "You won't take Silverstein road, but Calver's road and that is why you will drop me at Greenwoods, okay?"
"What!? Calver's road will only make us tour unnecessarily and it is not even the right route to Paddington Villa, are you sure you want to do this because I don't want to lose my driver's license by driving into Boulder."
"Did I ever mentioned that you will drive into Boulder? There's a traffic jam on Silverstein road and that is the reason we will be taking that route. Please, after this don't question me anymore." Nimah looked away, watching people through the car window. She found everything sight beautiful and fascinating.
She didn't realize that she was laughing until she saw her reflection on the glass window of the cab.
"You must be very irascible and it doesn't suite you in any way. I didn't mean to upset you, I only wanted to render my service properly." The driver apologize politely, which made Nimah feel guilty and ill-mannered.
Should she as well apologize to him? No! It was not necessary, she thought. Perhaps she should just say something that would make him know she wasn't angry with him, but before she could that driver spoke.
"Young lady, if I may ask, were you being forced to go to where you are going now? I could see how reluctant you were before you get into the car. I hope all is well." The driver spoke with looking back.
"Don't call me young lady, I am Nimah!" She yelled at the driver angrily, before she registered she that she had told a stranger her name. She felt like taking back her name from the driver, but it was not possible.
"Oh, I am sorry Nimah." The man apologized again but Nimah wasn't pleased this time. She regretted telling him her name, the way he called the name, made him sound like they were closer than it seem, and she didn't like this new informality.
She definitely would prefer him addressing her as young lady to Nimah, but how could she tell him that? Would she not appear troublesome in front of this loquacious driver. She could not wait to get out of the man's car.
She only regretted telling him her name, that wasn't what infuriated her. She was annoyed with the fact that the man had to remind her of Nathan because of his garrulousness. She sighed heavily with frustration and shook her head.
;;;
"You should get going now, Nimah will there anytime from now". Nathan said to Jayden
" Do not worry Nathan, it is me Jayden Chapman, I will do it so perfectly than you expected." Jayden put on his cotton black hoody, with a black sunshade, smirking evily.
"Nimah is going out of my life forever", Nathan giggled as Jayden worked to the car pack.
;;;;
"Mr. Man" Nimah suddenly called the driver and the driver braked the car immediately, turning back to Nimah.
"What is the problem Nimah?"
Don't call me Nimah, she was about to blurt but she ignored to face the problem she just found out.
"I am sorry Cabie, but you have to turn back. I need to go back home right away, it is very urgent." Nimah urged anxiously.
"Tell me! Why exactly do you want us to turn back, it possible I can solve the problem without us going back."
"I forget to pack the rolls along with me and that is the major reason why I am going. Please turn back and speed up."
"We can actually get some rolls from any random baker's store. You should not be so anxious."
"Nathan likes only his mother baked rolls, please don't ask me more questions. Turn back immediately." Nimah hurried the driver and he did as she said.
"Nimah!" Joe opened his mouth widely in shock as she sighted Nimah. How could she return so early, he thought but didn't say a word.
"Joe, where is mum?" Nimah asked as she hurried into the kitchen to get the rolls.
"Mum went upstairs." Joe said but still surprised by Nimah's early return.
"Mum! Mum!" Nimah called but no one responded. "Perhaps she is busy inside, tell her I was here to take the rolls she baked okay?"
"Sure! But why don't you go meet her upstairs." Joe suggested.
"No Joe, I came here very hurriedly, so i need to return quickly to deliver the food to... Nathan." She slowed down as she got to the name, Nathan. Her thought went back to Nathan and what she assumed he wanted to do.
The driver honked the horn of the car, which was a sign to hasten Nimah. "I will get going now."
Aaaaargh!
Nimah heard a feminine voice screaming from upper floor of the house as she was about to leave. She turned back and rushed to the stairs.
The sound was coming from Ms. Alicia's room, Nimah scuttled into the room just to find Alicia lying almost lifelessly on the ground. She had slumped and hit her head.
Nimah screamed as she run to her and squatted by her side. "Mum! mum! mum!"
No! She should not waste time. Nimah stood up and went to call the driver to help her with ms. Alicia to the hospital.
Nimah took ms. Alicia to the hospital and she was hospitalised immediately. According to the doctor, ms. Alicia slumped heavily and had broken an arm and she had to undergo therapy.
Nimah was extremely anxious, she paced back and forth in the reception waiting for the doctor to come our of the ward. She needed to call Nathan but how could she?
A nurse walked to her and handed over a phone to Nimah, telling her that it was found in the dress of her patient. Nimah took it immediately and went straight to dialer on the phone. The luck she had was that the phone wasn't secured with any pin or password.
She found out that ms. Alicia had missed Nathan's call severally. Without delaying, Nimah dialed Nathan's number which rang for some time before he picked up.
"Hello Mummy, I haven't seen Nimah at all...She isn't here yet. I think she has gone somewhere else to party, you really need to punish her." Nathan said, unaware that it was Nimah on phone.
Nimah didn't have an idea on how to start, if Nathan had allow her to speak first, probably she would have known what to say, but now she was shirt of words.
"Mum, why are you not saying anything?"
"Nathan, it's me N-Nim-Nimah." She stuttered.
"What!? What are you doing with my mom's phone and where are you now? I have been waiting for you, are you almost at Boulder's street?" Nathan spoke with impatience apparent in his voice.
"I am at the hospital, mum slumped and she has been hospitalised." Nimah responded, weeping quietly.
"What?" Nathan voice dropped.
"Please come quickly!" Nimah said before Nathan hung up.
.
"You need to arrest this girl, she is the one responsible for my mother's current condition and she has to pay for it."
