Chapter 30 - Seeking Permission
"When Damon directed me to the stationary, the fences were made of silver; perhaps I could return and retrieve some."
"Certainly not. Even that cannot serve as our last option, as it is a death wish. The stationary is monitored under 24-hour surveillance. Within one mile of the fences, you will be fatally shot.
It appears that my plan to steal the silver and escape on my own was unsuccessful.
"I understand."
"Damon is planning on killing off another village, one in New Brunswick, in Canada-"
"You cannot be serious-"
"I overheard him discussing it during the meeting, as I was serving him his alcohol."
"But he can't-"
"He currently possesses all the votes he requires. He has the capacity and the will to do so; It is only a matter of time before we are all terminated."
The necessity of acting quickly was readily apparent.
Maria's departure left me with the impression that she had some additional information to convey. Maybe it was related to the doctor's visit. I refrained from disclosing any information regarding Tiffany to her, as I was unable to guarantee that she would be extremely angry if she discovered that Tiffany was aware. I was preoccupied with the possibility that she would abandon the entire scheme.
Leaving the room, I straddled my injured arm in the hopes of locating Damon. I had to persuade him to allow me to see Tiffany. I was able to hear his voice in the hallway that was closest to the entrance. He is expected to conclude his meeting now. It was nearly eight o'clock, and I needed to leave quickly.
"How was she? Have you administered treatment to her arm?" It was possible for me to hear Damon prior to my turning the corner. A pause ensued, and I observed. My field of vision encompassed the doctor's briefcase and his back. Unfortunately, Damon was invisible to me.
"There was minimal risk of infection, as the cut was fairly minor. So I cleansed and disinfected it."
"Did you give her something to cover it?"
"Indeed, it is all wrapped up. I requested that she leave it wrapped up for a few days, and it should heal as expected."
"Do you have confidence that she will recover? There was a lot of blood."
"I'm certain, master."
"And maybe something to alleviate the pain?" Damon's expressed concern when he stated, "If you have something available, I could purchase it." Listening to it was almost peculiar.
"That won't be necessary, I assure you."
"Alright well..." As if he had more to say, Damon's voice was uncertain.
"Bullet will send you back. Your assistance is greatly appreciated."
The doctor advanced toward the front door, where Bullet was stationed, as I observed.
I remained waiting for a few minutes until he vanished. I could not risk allowing Damon to believe that I had overheard their conversation.
Why was my cut of such importance to him? In the absence of his inquiry regarding the pain medication, I would have been persuaded that it was related to my preparation for his hybrid.
Was it a concern of his that I was experiencing pain? Afraid that I was in distress, he contacted the doctor.
Despite my misbehavior, he let me out of the dungeon and he permitted me to follow Evan to the market out of compassion.
Did Damon care? Like his father, he began to care for his doll despite her barrenness.
Yet again, I reminded myself. Refrain from succumbing to his occasional exhibitions of vulnerability. He is a malevolent person who is capable of committing atrocious acts.
Clearing my throat, I declared my presence. Damon's gaze lifted from his smartphone.
He abruptly stated, "What now?" with a tone that was almost alarming, as if he were irritated. On my bandaged arm, his gaze rapidly shifted.
I mistekenly uttered the word "thank you."
it is too late at this time. I was compelled to provide an explanation.
"For contacting the doctor. You didn't have to.
He stated without addressing me, "It is too early for you to die."
"It was still very kind-"
"You are an idiot. A disease that could have taken the lives of the entire staff could have been transmitted if that wound had been infected. Even if it is accidental, you are not the one who determines the appropriate time to die. I decide it."
Again, I was overcome with fury.
To think that he nearly convinced me that he could be a respectable individual.
While the vampire was on her knees, the image of Damon slitting her throat suddenly flashed across my mind.
"While exploring the market, I encountered Tiffany, Luke's doll." She extended an invitation to me to join her and the ladies to socialize this evening. She is offering us advice on pregnancy."
He seemed to contemplate the matter for a moment before responding, "That is a kind gesture. Luke must have been the source of this notion."
"Can I go?"
"Certainly. Be patient and await the bullet's return."
"But it's at eight, and it's 7:50 now."
"I suggest that you depart immediately. He should be out in the driveway alongside the doctor."
"Thank you," I replied with a sincere smile. There was no response from him. Instead, he abruptly exited the room while responding to an incoming telephone call and subsequently started shouting at the person on the other end.
I will experience a pleasant sensation to have his blood is on hands.
