Chapter 41 - Caught In The Act

There were a few gasps but my eyes were on Damon. I saw his jaw clenching from the inside out, but he did not react. When I sat down again, I took a sip from my glass. The atmosphere was so thick enough to slice, everyone was still silent, waiting for Damon to react.

"Did you not know that it was a black event?" was Daphne's way of breaking the awkward silence.

"Yeah, I did," I said, raising my glass to the waiters to receive more champagne. "But the red is much more sexier.”

The gathering gradually dispersed after Damon made no mention of the dress.

"Did you manage to find anything out?" After making sure no one could overhear our chat, I asked Tiffany.

"Yes, I overheard Luke talking on the phone, I think the prison is in Sorrow Forest , near the vervain plantation."

"What's a vervain plantation?"

“In order to prevent the vampires from escaping, the plant keeps them weak. The silver can be found beneath the prison, although there has been some trouble after a few vampires attempted to break out a few days ago. Luke spent the entire morning outside taking care of it."

"How far is Sorrow Forest?"

"Not far, maybe half an hour or so, but it doesn't matter, it's a deathwish-"

"That's our only option,"

"Shut up!"

"More drinks, ladies?" asked Daphne as she joined the conversation holding the bottle.

After a while, I became weary of the phony laughs and pointless conversation. Hearing them recite the atrocity against those helpless villagers again was intolerable to me.

"There were hybrids from The Stationary in New Brunswick waiting for them at the next prison, they staked every single one of them."

"Five hundred and one filthy bloodsuckers to be exact."

"And not a single hybrid was killed."

"My son came from The Stationary to fight here, and he killed thirty of them all by himself.

"It's time for us to do it again, right away! A vampire clan that lives in Alaskan prisons and the one a few towns away is said to exist."

"This is the greatest idea you've had, Alpha."

I stood up to go outdoors and breathe some fresh air. I was drawn down to Damon's face by his hands around my wrist.

"Where do you think you're going?"

"That's none of your business," I said, releasing my hand from his hold and rushing through the security. It was impossible for me not to keep looking up at the cage above me as I moved through the crowd. What on earth was that inside?

I suddenly felt relief as I breathed in fresh air, and I was surprised by how much I had been feeling suffocated inside. I could feel the oxygen filling my lungs. A bunch of males were smoking cigarettes here.

"Can I have one?" The guys appeared surprised. The men seemed taken back. Surly, they recognized me as Damon's doll and decided to hand me on. I leaned forward while one lit it for me, the others examined my dress.

I thanked them and moved few meters away, leaning my back against the chilly brick. I had to ask Damon about the vampires and the silver; I wanted to know the location of the prison; I care no more of the risk. I told myself that I should hold off until after he'd had a few more drinks. I could see why people smoked now as it seemed to relieve some of the stress.

The devil himself suddenly appeared. His silk black button-up was now on; he had removed his jacket, his tattoos visible through his rolled-up sleeves.

“That was a cute little trick you pulled in there,”he said, taking the cigarette out of my hand and smoked it.

"You didn't seem to find it so funny," I commented.

"I said it was cute, not funny."

"What do you want?" I rolled my eyes. In addition to killing him, I want to rip his clothes.

He exhaled sharply, took out his phone, and said, "I wanted to show you something."

Inquiringly, I leaned in and observed Damon paging through his camera roll before pausing on a clip.

From over our bedroom door, the video showed us a perspective. It was a video from yesterday that showed Evan and me.
Watching as Evan leaned down to kiss me, I felt my stomach drop to my knees. He was unable to hear us talk, which was the only silver lining. I was angry with myself for not noticing the camera earlier.

Damon put his phone away and took a puff from his cigarette again.

"I just had these installed a day ago," he stated.

"So you're spying on me now?" I slipped up.

"I told you not to see him again-"

"We live in the same damn house! For crying out loud, both of us are prisoners in your home!"

"And the kiss?"

"Was nothing."

Damon didn’t say anything. "What are you going to do to him?" I asked.

“What makes you think I haven't already?"

My stomach fell again. "You didn't."

"You'll see." Damon threw the cigarette and walked on it on his way back inside.

"Shit, shit shit!" I blinked tears that had already flowed across my face and whispered to myself, "Shit, sh*t! I'm incredibly stupid."

How could I have been so foolish and careless? I had to find a phone and call Maria so she could notify him, or else I had to go back to the house and warn him. I realized that I had not memorized Maria's phone number.Perhaps Damon has already reached him, or perhaps he’s already dead.

I came charging back through the crowd and into the party. Luke had Damon sitting next him.

I cried out to him, "I need the car's keys!" Not even an eyelash did he give me. The crowd in the middle had parted, creating an opening in the center, and I realized that everyone had diverted their focus.

"What's happening?" I asked Tiffany.

She answered coldly, "They're doing a live display of how they've been killing all the humans."

"What do you mean?" "They are going to gas whoever is inside." The heavy chains were gradually bringing down the cage. Glancing at Damon, I felt my blood shiver as he gave me a grin. Now that the cage was on the ground, I turned to look back.

I looked back and the cage was now on the ground. Inside, there was a standing prisoner, hands and feet tied to a massive pole at the center of the box. I squinted my eyes to get a better look.
Inside of the cage was Evan.
