Chapter Thirteen
Chapter 13
ALAN’S POV
"Father!" My scream pierced through the surveillance room, reverberating off the walls as I sprinted to my father. He struggled to breathe, clutching his chest in agony. Lacking first aid skills, I dialed 911 in a frenzy.
A lump formed in my chest as I held my father close, terror gripping me, causing uncontrollable shivers.
"It's going to be okay, father," I reiterated like a desperate chant, swaying back and forth, the fear of losing him weighing heavily on my heart.
As my father lost consciousness, his body turned cold. I tried to warm him with my touch, but it was in vain.
The blare of sirens grew louder, and I sprang up, rushing to the front door to guide them in, leading them to where my father laid, pale and motionless.
"He just collapsed, I don't know what happened," I stammered to one of the paramedics as they gathered around him, handling him with care.
"We need you to stay calm and come with us," a paramedic urged, his words barely registering as I glanced at my father's frail form, the world seeming to slow down around me as I stepped into the ambulance. The wails of the sirens, the beeping of the monitors, all merging into a strangely soothing cacophony amidst the chaos.
I observed as they administered an injection to my father, dread filling me during the tense drive to the hospital. I rested my head in my hands, seeking a moment of peace.
"Stay with us," the paramedic instructed upon arrival at the hospital, rushing my father into the emergency room.
"You can't go in there, but we need a detailed report on what happened. Here, fill this out!" The medic's voice cut through the tension, his urgency palpable as I watched my father being whisked away. A silent prayer escaped my lips, hoping for his well-being.
I swiftly completed the form and handed it to the reception attendant, my heart racing as I awaited news about my father's condition.
Restlessly pacing the hospital room, I fought back tears, willing myself to stay composed. Sitting down, my legs jittered uncontrollably as I anxiously ran my fingers through my hair, the wait feeling endless.
The hospital corridors buzzed with activity, a mix of newborn cries and sorrowful wails painting a vivid picture of life's cycle.
Lost in my thoughts, the unresolved case of Jemima loomed in my mind. I had yearned to go to Rome to aid in her search, but with my father's sudden illness, it seemed like an impossible dream.
"Excuse me, doctor!" I exclaimed, rushing towards him as he emerged from the emergency room. His gentle smile offered a glimmer of hope as he greeted me warmly.
"Mr. Alan!" the doctor acknowledged, extending his hand for a handshake. I reciprocated, my heart pounding with anticipation for his update on my father's condition.
"How is my father, doctor?" I inquired, panic evident in my voice, a lump forming in my throat. I struggled to contain the whirlwind of emotions threatening to overwhelm me.
"We've stabilized your father for now, but I'm afraid there's some troubling news," the doctor relayed with a composed demeanor, his words landing heavily on my ears, drowning out all other sounds..
"In essence, what exactly are you suggesting?" I questioned in a hushed tone, feeling my breath hitch in my throat, the tension thick in the air.
The doctor's revelation hit me like a thunderbolt, "Mr. Ross suffered a severe heart attack and is currently in an induced coma. A heart transplant is imperative for his recovery," his words reverberated in my mind, leaving me stunned and disoriented.
As the doctor continued speaking, his words seemed to fade into the background, my mind consumed by the dire situation unfolding before me.
"...Then he'll be alright," the doctor's voice trailed off, but my focus was elsewhere, struggling to grasp the gravity of the situation.
"Is my father... going to die?" I asked, a wave of fear washing over me at the mere thought.
"If we don't secure a heart replacement promptly, unfortunately, yes," the doctor's honest admission sent a chill down my spine, his comforting touch on my shoulders offering little solace. I nodded in silent understanding, my gaze fixed on the room where my father lay.
"May I see him?" I inquired, seeking permission from the doctor, my eyes searching for reassurance.
"Of course, you may. The sedative's effects should be wearing off soon. If you'll excuse me," the doctor excused himself, leaving me to grapple with the weight of his words. I made my way to my father's bedside.
Approaching him cautiously, I clasped his hand in mine, observing the rhythmic motion of his chest rising and falling. The monitor's beeping, a constant reminder of his fragile state.
Could the news of Jemima's abduction have triggered my father's heart attack? I pondered, a surge of emotions threatening to overwhelm me as I fought to maintain composure.
A slight movement from my father drew my attention, his presence a stark reminder of the delicate balance between life and loss..
As my father stirred in his sleep, a sense of urgency gripped me, my gaze fixated on his every move. His eyes slowly opened, adjusting to the sunlight's glare, a flicker of recognition sparking within them.
"Father," I murmured softly, reaching out to comfort him, my touch gentle against his head. A faint cough escaped him, his gaze meeting mine with warmth and affection.
"Jemima! Ensure her safety," his voice strained, punctuated by coughs, urgency lacing his words. Hastily, I fetched water, offering it to him as he struggled to regain composure.
"I can't leave you like this," I protested, torn between duty and filial piety. Jay could handle Jemima; my place was by my father's side. The complexity of his love for Jemima, a non-biological heir, gnawed at me, jealousy simmering beneath the surface.
Frustration welled within me at his insistence, his vulnerability a stark contrast to his usual strength. His plea echoed in the room, his eyes pleading for reassurance.
“Promise me Alan,” he begged.
"I promise," I vowed, a steely resolve settling within me, determined to fulfill his wish amidst the turmoil of emotions swirling within me.
