Auror
“I had resigned myself to never having a mate, but when Luna told me that the small, fragile human was destined for me, I wanted to roar with rage.
For three hundred years, I wandered believing that someday a female of my kind would be born to calm the heat of the moon cycles, but looking at Anira, I’m sure I’d break her in half.
Frustrated, I pace around my room, restless. Even though I don’t want her, even though I wish I could throw her out, my instincts are already guiding me toward her. Now I understand all my unusual irritation and this curiosity mixed with the desire to be near her. She is my mate.
“No! This cannot be. That human doesn’t even have the characteristic scent of an angelic,” — I speak into the darkness.
“Do you know what’s more interesting?” — Black, the damn silent ferus. “You hate humans so much, and as punishment, you got a mate who is 98% human, small and fragile.”
“Shut up! This must be a mistake.”
“Do you doubt the word of the ancients?”
“Luna must be getting old, that’s all,” — I snarl, searching for any way out of this confusion.
I hear his laughter as he shakes his fur, splashing rainwater everywhere, and he doesn’t change form.
“Old or not, this is your fate, but we can wait until the heat season. The snow will be high, and not even a harem of females in heat will make you look at them. You’ll only desire Anira. As your friend, I say you need to get close to her now. The doctor needs to understand everything that is going to happen.”
“No!” — I roar ferally.
“You can kill her, Auror, it’s no longer about you. Besides, we know that even if she’s close to her mate, she won’t be able to endure it.”
“Damn it!” — I bellow so loudly I can feel the walls vibrating.
“Stop growling and behave.”
“I told you to be quiet!”
“Where is she?” — he probes, changing the subject.
“In the staff room,” — I inform, and then I see him sniffing the air.
“Did you drug her? Did you give her sleep root?”
“Yes.”
“And what do you want with that?”
“Take her back to her house and leave her in her bed. She’ll surely believe she dreamt it all and will never imagine she was here.”
“Auror, talk to her. You two can help each other. You’re mates.”
“No!”
“Damn old and stubborn specimen.”
“She’s a human! She’s not my mate!”
“No, she’s your human mate. The facts are clear, with hair as white as snow that doesn’t stay dyed. The oracles revealed it, and Luna confirmed it. Stop being stubborn.”
I leave Black talking to the walls and head to where she is surely sleeping. As I open the door slowly, I see her nearly falling off the bed, as if she hadn’t had time to settle in. Despite my reluctance, I adjust her body onto the mattress, keeping my distance. The storm outside still rages, but I understand it; I’m in the same state. The only difference is that she can destroy everything out there, while I cannot do the same inside here.
While I fight against the small tremors in my body, which, though imperceptible, tell me how things will be from now on, I see the dusk come, taking the rain with it and signaling that it’s the right moment to take her away.
Gently, I pick her up in my arms. As I settle her, she snuggles closer to me, as if my body were a soft and cozy mattress. Her long white hair hangs loose, and I carry her out into the forest. I don’t run, I simply walk, able to see everything as if it were daytime. Even the nocturnal animals are silent at this moment. I decide to study her a bit more.
Anira isn’t such a small human; she’s the size of an adult female ferus in human form. Her long hair reaches past her hips. She has curves, with thick legs, full breasts, and a flat, smooth stomach.
Why am I thinking about this? I shake my head, quickening my pace.
Anira rubs her face against my chest, and just that movement causes something strange in me. I clench my teeth. She smiles, even while asleep, I can see that she’s smiling.
I arrive at her house and enter through the back door, which is open. I carry her to her room and place her on the bed, covering her with the blankets. I stand there, analyzing the woman before me. Everything inside me screams to lie down with her, to hold her in my arms again, but I cannot. No, it’s against everything I believe. Humans are untrustworthy; they always have been.
I push these thoughts away and leave her presence before I give in to this damned temptation. She is not, and will never be, my mate.
