Auror
We spent the entire day together, in bed. Ann has become sensitive to me, but we are on the right track. By the time the heat comes, she will be ready for all the long days of mating. I wish to reach the moment when our connection is so strong that we can communicate only in our minds.
It is the early hours of the morning when, exhausted, she falls asleep, taking me with her.
I open my eyes when I feel Ann’s body move away from mine. My instincts go on high alert. When she moves away, I grab her wrist. My hand is much larger, and I control my strength.
"Where do you think you're going?" I ask when she looks at me, startled.
"To the bathroom." She raises an eyebrow, not understanding my movement.
I release her, and she goes. When my mate is away, I’m consumed by agony. I can’t believe she’s with me, and that we spent the last few hours mating. Every liberating cry she made made the animal in me proud. I will always be the only one to make her cry out in pleasure.
She takes a while, and I start to feel restless. When I think about getting out of bed to check on her, the door opens, and she comes out, dressed.
"Where do you think you're going?" I leap out of bed.
"To work."
"No!" I roar, my command fierce.
"How not? I was hired to manage the Forty Mile farm circuit. There’s no one else to share the work." I remind her that she’s my mate.
"That doesn’t make you my owner!" she retorts angrily, and her look makes me feel the urge to retreat, but that instinct will not stop me.
"You’re not going out alone, Anira Montecião. You’re not going around without me being able to take care of you. You’re my mate, and I need to protect you."
"From what? The cows? Arow, don’t do this."
"NO!"
"You won’t stop me." She crosses the room and heads down the stairs.
I put on the thin cloth loincloth, a remnant of my humanity. At this hour, the staff should be working. I follow her swiftly and see her enter the kitchen, being guided by an employee.
"Everyone out!" I order, making them jump and disappear from my view.
"Have you gone mad? You don’t treat people like that."
"I’m their leader; they need to obey me."
"I’d sue you."
"How?"
"Oh, I see you two are getting along well." Black and his damned silent approach.
"Until a few minutes ago. Auror, do you really think you’re going to keep me locked up in this house?" she says, and I glare at Black, who’s wide-eyed.
"I see the bond has already started," he points out.
"But it’s not strong enough yet," I say.
"Afraid of what, Auror?" Black says, and I want to strangle him.
"Black, where is Arow?" Ann seems uninterested in what I’m saying.
"Have him come in; the coffee will get cold," she orders, and my best friend’s look doesn’t seem to intend to disobey her.
"Anira, things don’t work this way," I interject, struggling to contain my urge to blow this damn house apart.
"Yes, they do." She stands up. "Until a few days ago, I was just a veterinarian. Now I’m your mate; I’ve discovered a species, and yes, I’m part of a celestial angelic lineage and everything that entails. I decided to stay, first, thinking I would suffer, and second, because my mind can only be influenced by some drug you surely put in the city’s water. But Auror Vont’in, I accept my fate, the desires of my body, and the insane will to belong to you." Everything she says is while standing, tapping the tip of her finger on my chest. "But you don’t control my work, and you don’t get rid of my friends, understood?"
I hear Black laugh, and I growl at him, making him freeze.
"Black, have Arow come in; I won’t ask again." She goes back to her place, resuming her coffee.
"Your stubbornness annoys me, Anira; you can’t decide things this way," I say, controlling my voice.
"Just like you can’t order me around thinking I’ll obey. Either you sit down and talk, or we’ll talk as equals; I’ll treat you as you treat me," she retorts.
"Excuse me." Arow’s voice invades the kitchen, and I snarl in anger, feeling my body tense.
"Arow, come have coffee; we’re almost late."
"Ann, I think it’s better if you wait outside," he informs, looking at me.
"No, Auror says I’m his mate, so I definitely can’t go back home. If I live here, you eat with me." I look and confirm what she says, seeing him approach and sit down.
I walk out furiously to the library.
"It seems that the great Auror Vont’in has just discovered the power a mate has."
"Shut your damn mouth, or I swear I’ll make you shut up!" I threaten. "She’s a damn stubborn mate."
"You can’t keep her locked up, Auror."
"But I can’t protect her away from me."
"Do you really think someone would harm her? First, your words already affect us; second, she’s your mate, your scent dominates her entire scent, and no one would be crazy enough to approach."
"She’s small and fragile; she could get hurt at any moment."
"But it won't.
"You can't be sure.
"That angelic is strong and threatening; you knew that, and so did you the moment she crossed your path against Arow and threatened him with a knife.
He is right, but my instincts want her close.
"We could strengthen the bond.
"I agree, but from the way you spoke, all you'll find is resistance; she isn't someone from your clan who would obey you blindly; she is your partner, the one with whom you share authority over everyone.
A furious grunt escapes; I hate that Black is right, but she's too stubborn.
"Get two veterinarians to Forty Mile by yesterday; that's an order, Black. The mating cycle will start soon, and she won't be leaving the house.
"We are arranging it.
"Arrange it faster. — I spit the order in a growl.
I hear the sound of the truck outside, and that's enough for me to roar so loudly that it can surely be heard even in the sacred tower."
