Chapter 20
The drive around the reserve was exhilarating. There are so many animals, so many preys and fewer predators to maintain the ecosystem. Some are eating and minding their business ,some are just chilling under shades of trees protecting themselves from the scorching sun and some are hunting their prey.
Jake carried his camera so he took lots of nice pictures that he will share with us later. We head to the river where the great wildebeest migration occurs. Am so excited that I can't sit still. I have seen videos and read reviews but now I get to see it with my own two eyes up close. My dream is finally coming true.
The wildebeest, antelopes and zebras cross every year to Serengeti national reserve looking for food. At this time of the year in Kenya ,it rarely rains so the animals lack enough food to sustain themselves making it an issue. The migration is necessary for their survival.
So what happens in the great migration is ,the animals cross a large river filled with crocodiles to go to the other side where their is greener pastures. I know you have watched The lion king, do you remember the scene where Simba's dad died trying to save his son from being trampled on by wildebeest? that is what happens here except in a large river full of water and crocodiles.
The animals run very fast through the river to the other side hopping to not get eaten. Since they are so many of them, the crocodiles take this opportunity to target the young , slow ,sick and the old. Sometimes they don't even eat them ,they just kill as much as they can and save some for a rainy day.
Explaining to you now doesn't do the event any justice. You just have to see it for yourself, it's magical. Actually it's classified as the seventh wonder of the world. I feel so sad for the animals that are so young as they are easy targets for the crocodiles but as they say it's the circle of life.
After the migration we watch some lionesses hunt in the evening. I feel like the lioness should be the head of the family. Just hear me out ,they hunt for their meal and yet they have to let the male take the first bite, take care of cubs and also protect their home. That right there is leadership material and no one can tell me otherwise. What does the male lion actually do? Nature is just weird.
I felt so bad for an antelope that was surrounded by lionesses during a hunt, corned from every angle by predators making it impossible for it to run to safety. The poor thing was torn apart. These animals are vicious. The law of the jungle dictates that it's survival for the fittest and I can't help but wonder if that is how the world is nowadays. We are the prey hunted by predators who come in various forms.
The predators ate to their fill and left to go rest somewhere. After they leave the hyenas come in to eat the remains. Hyenas are very interesting animals, they never hunt unless they are extremely hungry. They are natures free loaders, they wait for someone else to do the heavy work and they eat the remains. Very cunning and smart if you ask me.
As evening approached we had no water left so we decided to go back to the camp. We drove back to our campsite to freshen up, which as you can imagine was really needed before dinner. We were sticky from sweat and dust.
At the dinner table, Marcus and I occupied on one side of the table while Jake occupied the other. They requested for nyama choma which they are clearly now obsessed with. They want it exactly as it was at the small joint we tried but it can't be the same. Rich people hotels don't cook the same as those small joints. There's always a huge difference between street food and hotel food.
After dinner they brought us some wine which we enjoyed while we conversed. The conversation was smooth until Marcus's phone started ringing and he had to go talk somewhere more quiet.
Jake and I don't talk much because we have nothing in common except that am dating his brother, so it was just awkward siting there looking at each other. Maybe if we had some time to know each other this awkward exchange would happen.
" So tell me Zee ,how did you meet my brother?" He asked.
" We met at a club in town" I answered.
" That's a good way to meet"
" Yea"
We both look around searching for something, anything to talk about. I decide to go check on his brother because I can't do whatever this is anymore. I stand to walk to the designated path when I suddenly trip on something and fall on Jake. Since am heavy and it was unexpected we both fall down with a thump.
" Oh my God! are you hurt?" I ask scared that maybe he's hurt.
He is on the ground and am on top of him. A very compromising position. Before I could ask again if he is okay, he kissed me, right on my lips. I felt like I was having an outer body experience. My brain couldn't comprehend what was happening and by the time I could react he tried to kiss me again but this time I pushed him away from me. Rolling quickly on the grass and forcing myself up.
" What the hell was that Jake?" I asked angrily.
This is not something I could ever imagine happening. What if his brother found me on him? Did he do it on purpose? Was he trying to create a rift between his brother and I? I just don't understand the intention behind that kiss.
" Sorry, I thought that this is what you wanted" he said not being apologetic at all.
" What I wanted? Did you ask me and I told you that is what I wanted?" getting furious by what he was spurting.
" You didn't have to say anything at all .I can see that you like me" he said with a grin on his face.
" Are you fucking insane? Only an insane person would do what you did " I say shaking my head
" Don't do that Zee, you and I both know you are with my brother for his money. I also have money that I can give you if you let me have a taste" he said coming closer to me.
" What the actual fuck! I love your brother you swain. I can't believe you would do this, the nerve some people have" I try to pinch myself because this can't be real. Not in a million years.
" My brother doesn't understand the word love. He will drop you immediately someone more interesting comes along" he said with an evil smile on his face.
This guy is clearly nuts . Something must be missing in his head or some neurons are not working. I can't understand how anyone could do this to their sibling. This is just sick.
" Stay the fuck away from me " I command.
He stops immediately running his hand in his hair. I start stumbling away not wanting to be anywhere near that maniac. I don't know what to do or how to tell Marcus about this. Should I even tell him? What will this mean for us? For our fragile relationship? Or I should just keep my mouth shut and not say a word about this to him.
I don't want to create a rift between siblings and he will probably believe his brother over me. Maybe this kiss meant nothing? just innocent. He took too much to drink or maybe he's on drugs. That would explain why he would think kissing his brother's girlfriend is a good idea. I have to tell Marcus about this, whatever happens next will be on him.
Too mentally tired to say anything ,I lay on our bed to try and get some sleep. A little sleep always makes me feel better. I'll definitely be able to think more clear tomorrow.
