Chapter 12: Lexa

Chapter Twelve:
~ Lexa ~
The room was dark. Everyone was gone for the night. And for the first time in a while, I breathed. It wasn’t that bad yet. But they were rushing my ‘treatment’ along. I was a public enemy. I deserved to die. That’s what so many people had told me today. They didn’t even pretend to be treating me. They wanted something, but I hadn’t shown them that I was of use to them yet, which infuriated them. They knew I had powers. But they didn’t know how to access them without me being semi-compliant. And if there was one thing I was good at, it was not being compliant.
I looked over at Will. He laid in the cell across from me, looking more dead than alive. His face when I had been brought in had defied everything I had hoped it would. The shock. The recognition. The pain. Gave everything away. I knew Will. I knew that he couldn’t help himself, and given the opportunity, he would make a deal with someone. He would let them manipulate him into thinking he was saving me but would only be setting our family up for failure. And they, the people here, knew it too.
“Will,” I whispered. I was going on no sleep in almost 48 hours, but you don’t really need sleep, when the chances of you dying anyway are strong. No one ever faces death and goes, wow I wish I had slept last night.
“Will,” I tried again.
He moved this time, and I wanted so badly to run my fingers through his matted hair. I wanted to make him feel better.
“I’m sorry, Will.” I whispered.
I knew he would hate what I was about to do, but I could manipulate the energy around us, and give him more strength. I could give him some of mine. I closed my eyes and began the process. Closing my eyes felt nice as I redirected the energy to Will.
I opened my eyes when a groan escaped his lips.
“It’s okay, Will. It’s okay,” I tried to keep the panic from my voice. “It’s me. It’s just me.”
“She told me she wouldn’t hurt you,” He mumbled, trying to sit up.
“Don’t move. Don’t move.” I urged. “It’s okay. This was my plan. S is helping me… Well… was helping me.”
His eyes opened and met mine. I had missed looking into those sky-blue eyes every day.
“You are not supposed to be here.” He answered sounding stronger now. “We had a deal. If any of us were taken, there would be no extreme measures to save them.”
“You call this extreme?” I tried to make a joke by rattling my chains, but it was met with Will’s solemn face.
“Yes.” He answered, moving to sit up more easily in his shackles. “I call this incredibly dumb and extreme. And exactly what I told you not to do.”
“Meh.” I smiled. “I call this being brilliant. And you don’t get to tell me what to do, Will.”
He cocked his head off to the side, studying me in the dark.
“What do you have planned, Lex?”
“It’s going to take some time, okay?” I told him. “I wanna see what I can from here. I think there’s more of our people here. We need to learn what we can. But I think I’ll be able to manipulate the energy we need to get out of here.”
“We don’t have a lot of time…” He told me uneasily.
“Don’t worry, I’ll figure it out.” I responded. I needed to be easing his fears, not creating more.
He looked at me through the dark, his eyes shining with curiosity but also full of worry.
“You look tired.” He stated.
“I’m fine,” I answered, brushing off his concern. I knew I didn’t look good. My hair was falling out of their braids. I hadn’t slept in god knows how long, and S had punched me in the face before I got ‘tested’ by them.
“You haven’t been sleeping again.” He commented, his face serious.
I shook my head at how well he knew me.
“I’ve missed you,” I told him earnestly.
“God, Lex. When we get out of here, I am going to kill you.” He stated, with just a hint of laughter in his voice.
“I’ll be looking forward to it,” I replied with a smile.
“Get some sleep,” He said after a moment. “Morning will come quick and there won’t be time to rest.”
I nodded and tried to lay down with my shackles making it incredibly uncomfortable.
“Lexa?” Will asked after we had both been silent a while.
“Yea?” I whispered back.
“I love you.”
I smiled. “I love you too.”
And for the first time in weeks, sleep came a little easier.

“WAKE UP!” Someone shouted.
“Why?” I mumbled, trying to pull myself out of the sleepiness I still felt. “It’s not like I’m going to tell you anything.”
“You will tell us everything. There is no way there is just the 2 of you left!”
“Why not?” I turned to face the guy talking to me who I realized very quickly was S’s Dad, Gabriel Oakley. “You’ve killed many, many, many, people like me. You killed my mother, for god’s sake. You have made every effort to get people to come forward, so you can take them. You even set my home on fire.” Will’s eyes got big, but I was grateful all eyes were on me and not him. “I am all that is left. Look at him, he’s nearly dead.” I gestured at the only person I cared about at the moment. “He’s no use to you anymore. So, it is your move sir, but you need me and if that’s the case, we’re going to do this my way.”
