Suzanne slept through the night, and Nathan kept a close watch on their children the whole time. The nurse he had hired had also been a great help.
As soon as the sun came up, he took a quick shower and hid his folders so Suzanne wouldn't see them yet.
She found him in the living room with the babies in his arms and was surprised to see him there so early. She hadn't even heard him arrive.
He knew he had taken longer than expected, but with the bad weather, it was understandable, especially since the place he went to was on the outskirts of London.
“The important thing is that everything is ready,” he told himself, satisfied.
If Suzanne didn't accept him after this, then he would have to convince her.
He had thought about using his persuasive tactics, but he told himself that with her, it would be a mistake, and he would never lose her again.
He joined them, and they played and fed the babies until they fell asleep again. She took the opportunity to shower and put on something more presentable.
When she came back downstairs, Nathan took her hand and led her to the kitchen, where they had a peaceful breakfast.
The morning passed quickly, and in the afternoon, some knocks on the door alerted Suzanne.
“Dylan!” she exclaimed, overwhelmed with emotion.
The person in question opened his mouth wide and then ran to his friend, squeezing her in a hug that left her breathless.
“Doll, oh God!” her friend sobbed. “I was so worried, so hurt by life for taking the best friend in the world from me… and here you are!”
“Who… who told you?” she asked curiously.
He pointed to Nathan, who raised his hand, declaring himself guilty.
“Oh, Nathan… thank you so much,” Suzanne smiled, knowing that thanks to him, she could enjoy her friend's company after so long.
They hadn’t told him anything because of Nathan’s trial, but now her life could return to normal, and what better way than with her best friend.
“Anything for you, babe,” Nathan smiled, winking at her.
Dylan was still a bit wary of him, but soon forgot about it as he focused on the babies and saw that Nathan Stone was sincere in his actions and words.
They were playing with the babies and admiring them as if they were pieces of art when a new visitor arrived, making Suzanne apprehensive and Dylan puzzled.
Nathan was the only one who could imagine who it might be.
“Come in, Jamie,” he greeted his friend.
Dylan lost his smile and the color drained from his face.
Now he didn’t know where to run, and from the expression on Nathan’s face, he knew immediately that the meeting had been deliberately planned.
He felt like wringing both their necks.
“I better go, darling,” he hurriedly kissed Suzanne’s cheek, completely ignoring Jamie. “I’ll come back another day to see these handsome little guys. Take good care of yourself, please.”
He started to walk away down the hall, but Jamie grabbed his arm, making him stop.
“Dylan…”
“Don’t ever talk to me again,” Dylan snapped, frowning. “What are you doing here right now? You couldn't be more untimely.”
“Listen… I know I did something I shouldn’t have,” Jamie quickly said, looking sad and remorseful. “I regret all of it, Dylan.”
“You had no right…” Dylan whispered, hurt.
“I know… but seriously, forgive me,” Jamie said, a huge lump in his throat. “I swear, there’s nothing harder than living without you.”
Dylan swallowed, feeling uncomfortable.
“How can I trust you again after that?” he grimaced.
Jamie cleared his throat.
“I’ll spend the rest of my days making it up to you,” he sighed, feeling his heart racing. “I love you so much. Please, give me a chance.”
Nathan watched the scene with a smile, as did Suzanne, moved by the two of them. Watching them was better than an afternoon soap opera.
Dylan ran a hand through his hair awkwardly. It was obvious that he loved Jamie, but he felt hurt by what he had done, especially since he had wanted to protect his friend.
Though he thought about how Jamie wanted to help his friend, and that made him reflect a bit; if it had been the other way around, maybe he would have done the same.
“I’ve never seen anyone more pathetic than now, Dylan,” Nathan said playfully, earning a murderous look from Jamie. “Believe me, this fool loves you and won’t give up on being with you.”
“Dylan does too,” Suzanne said, and Dylan looked at her, both perplexed and annoyed. “We understand Jamie’s reasons now. Why don’t you give each other a chance and leave everything behind?”
The two of them looked at each other with flushed cheeks, and then Dylan gave a small smile, which Jamie returned—a smile that promised many things for the future.
After that enchanting scene, they left, and the afternoon passed, giving way to the dark winter night.
Suzanne was in the living room, sitting on the couch by the fireplace, and the twins were in their bassinets, sleeping nearby. Those two only woke up to eat, and as soon as they were satisfied, they went back to sleep.
Nathan came down the stairs in one of his best suits, carrying a folder, looking like a true businessman.
“Where are you going?” she asked, unable to contain herself. He looked stunning in that suit.
“I’m going to make the best deal of my life,” Nathan replied, and she looked at him a bit doubtfully.
“What’s in that folder?” she wondered.
“And is that the contract?” she said, pointing to the folder.
“Yes.”
“Is the person who will sign the contract very special?” she wanted to know.
“They’re extremely important, but I don’t know if that person will accept this deal. The last one didn’t go very well,” he grimaced.
“Oh…”
She couldn't understand what kind of deal it was. If it was the best deal of his life, she hoped she would be included, but it seemed to be just a regular business agreement, which saddened her a bit.
