Wedding bells

“Are you sure?” Nathan asked me, standing outside his father’s office.
“Yes,” I replied.
His lips closed into a tightened straight line as he reached for the doorknob, only to stop at the very last moment. “Are you a hundred percent sure about this?”
“Yes, Nathan!” I exclaimed. He had asked me that question more than fifty times during the short yet tedious journey from his room to Mr. Sinclair’s office. After careful consideration, I had agreed to bring Nathan’s child into the world. My mind had achieved clarity about it. He, on the other hand, was clearly struggling to accept it.
Nathan twisted the knob unwillingly. His hand was there, but his mind was still fixated on the same question. I could tell he would annoy me with that same question at least a few more times before opening that damn door.
“I hope you’re adamant about becoming a mother because once you speak to my parents, they will not let it go until you conceive and birth this promised child. Get prepared to have no privacy until you show them a positive pregnancy test. They will badger you into doing it soon every day. As they have no boundaries, they will coach us themselves or hire a professional to do so on the different sex positions and other tips that help to conceive fast. Don’t awaken the beast, Amelia, if you are not fully prepared for what it may do to you.”
I narrowed my eyes at Nathan. He was making it sound like I was about to play with the Ouija board to summon demons. They were his adult parents. Surely, they wouldn’t act so improperly. I couldn’t guarantee that Mrs. Sinclair would act maturely during the entire process, but Mr. Sinclair was an intelligent man and a business tycoon. A person handling a billion-dollar business would surely know how to handle this sensitive family problem.
“Nathan. I am dead sure about my decision. If you are having second thoughts, you have the right to refuse. No one is forcing you to do this,” I reminded him.
“Nah! I am fine with it,” Nathan replied. A child could analyze that he was lying. I had no desire to force this upon him. Bringing his child into the world would only prove burdensome and disadvantageous for me. No matter the situation, his parents and their endless wealth would always cover for him.
It was too late to back out now. Nathan had knocked on his father’s door, and the response was almost immediate.
Mr. Sinclair was sitting idly on his desk, wearing the most unforgiving expression, until his eyes fell upon his son. Within seconds, he became a ray of sunshine from a dangerous mafia boss in deep thought.
“Son. My dear son.” Mr. Sinclair came rushing towards his son with open arms. He hugged him warmly, and Nathan cringed at his effort. “I have been wanting to see you for days. At last, you decided to visit me after my countless attempts to apologize and make you happy again.”
Mr. Sinclair tried to make up with his son? Nathan was the one who had been blocking him all along. Before me was a classic example of enabling a child. My fiancé had no patience to hear no because his parents had no guts to upset him. Oh, my! My task was not only to teach him more kindness, but I also had to discipline a full-grown adult. Mr. And Mrs. Sinclair needed to do better than that. Unspoiling their only child was unlikely at this point.
“Amelia made me realize I was at fault as well,” Nathan said, surprising everyone in the room.
“She did what?” Mr. Sinclair gaped. He came to me and grabbed my hand. “You are truly a lucky charm for this family and the perfect new addition. A woman like you is rare to find. My son is blessed to have you in his life.”
“You like her now. I wonder how you would react to something else we are here to announce,” Nathan added.
“What is it?” Mr. Sinclair asked me. “Are we hearing wedding bells soon, or is something else? I bet you two are here to confess your love for each other.”
“None of that, Dad. I think you’ll lose consciousness when you hear it,” Nathan replied. “Your generous future daughter-in-law has made a heroic decision.” It bothered me a little that Nathan was treating it like a joke.
“What?” Mr. Sinclair could hardly contain his excitement. “You’re torturing me with the delay.”
Nathan walked up to me and put his arm around me. “She has made the noble decision of blessing you with a grandchild as soon as possible,” he revealed.
Mr. Sinclair went silent. He darted back and forth between Nathan and me. He appeared to be waiting for one of us to admit the falsehood.
“He is telling the truth,” I said. In case he was having a hard time believing his son. As soon as I confirmed it, I saw the most wild display of happiness by Mr. Sinclair. He wasn’t happy. He was ecstatic.
“I have no words to express my joy. Finally, our prayers have been answered.” Mr. Sinclair hugged us both multiple times as he spoke. “I hope it’s not a weird way of you telling us she is already pregnant. Now, is it?”
“No. She is not. But she wishes to be,” said Nathan happily, glancing my way. “My wonderful fiancé thinks we should give my parents and ourselves the happiness we all deserve of a little one without wasting time.”
“Son. You have given me everything with this one good news. Now, don’t worry about this child being born out of wedlock. No one in the family would judge you for living the life you want and deserve,” Mr. Sinclair said.
“Who said anything about my first child being born out of wedlock? If we can make a baby together, we shouldn’t have any problem saying I do at the altar. There shall be a wedding soon. A most lavish celebration, to be exact,” Nathan claimed, sending me into shock.
