A dangerous car ride

I smoothened the wrinkles of my dress, pushing it down to my knees. Where was I? Well, I was in Nathan Sinclair's car, of course. How could I have said no to a ride back to his home? Our engagement was over, but I still wanted to stay employed.
Nathan and I were in the back passenger seats of his Rolls Royce, and his driver was driving the car. I had never been in such a luxury car before. Everything about it spoke money. Even the smell of the leather seats resembled the scent of dollar bills. I was enjoying that rare experience when suddenly something dawned upon me. Nathan's generous offer of a ride back home was a sneaky way to flaunt his wealth to me. He wanted to show me what I was missing by refusing to be his bride. It made better sense than him wanting to murder me. I had difficulty breathing for the previous five minutes, imagining how and when he would end my life. Even though the words ostentatious and Nathan were synonyms, I still couldn't drop the idea of my conspired murder entirely. I had to stay cautious at every moment.
Nathan hadn't spared a glance my way, let alone say a word to me. He had been looking in the same direction with an unsettlingly unreadable expression since the moment we got inside the car.
I had to break the ice somehow and learn what he had in mind. "It must be nice to have a home so close to nature. Do you come to the woods often?"
Nathan turned his head so quickly in my direction that I almost hit the door, trying to protect myself from a possible knife attack. His furrowed brows and angrily intense gaze made me tremble uncontrollably. "I am sick, remember? I wouldn't have come here if it wasn't for you and Elijah. Nature is only appealing to the able-bodied people," he said.
His rude answer made one thing clear. He wasn't happy with me and was only pretending to be okay with everything.
"Some days, you can walk. What do you do during that time?" I asked, desperate to continue the conversation.
"I enjoy walking without support, of course," came another rude reply.
Oh boy, I had not thought through how awkward it would be to stay around Nathan, especially when he had decided to act to be unaffected by rejection.
Silence might be the right thing to do now. I wanted Elijah to join us on the ride, but he refused, saying he had unfinished business there. It had to be a lie. What could he possibly need to do in the middle of nowhere? Nathan must have asked him to leave us two alone.
I straightened my legs and looked ahead. It was pointless to talk to Nathan. He was a closed book. My shivering body wouldn't allow me to sit straight. The horror of what might happen next was consuming me. I quickly looked around for my purse, which contained my phone. I needed to inform Frank about where I was for my safety. Also, as the true Nathan expert, he could share some valuable insights.
As I searched for my purse, I came to a bitter realization. I had left my purse somewhere in that house in the middle of the woods.
"Damn it, my purse!" I complained out loud. Nathan's attention instantly moved to me. "I forgot my purse in that place. Can we go back there to get it?"
"I'll call Elijah and tell him to find it and bring it with him back home," said Nathan bluntly. He looked away. It seemed like he was trying to hide a smirk. I could swear I saw the edges of his mouth move up. He liked that I had forgotten my purse. But why? Why would a person enjoy it if he didn't have sinister intentions?
"That's alright. All I wanted was my phone to make a call. Can I please borrow yours?" I asked, playing it smart.
Nathan tapped his fingers on his knees gracefully, like a classy villain from an old movie. "I forgot to bring my phone in a hurry. It won't take long to reach home. I suppose you can wait until then to make the call. It can't be a business call, now is it? If it's Frank you are calling, he is on a break during this hour," he said, looking at his wristwatch.
I bit the insides of my cheek. Nathan knew my plan. What did he want to do to me?
"For the sake of God, let me talk to my friend Frank. I have something very important to say to him," I panicked.
"Like what?" Nathan asked. He seemed unperturbed by my overreaction.
"Uh, I can't share. It's very personal," I replied.
"Amelia, you were fine moments ago. Don't make it seem like an emergency. I told you I forgot to bring my phone. Be patient," said Nathan.
I sank into my seat with folded arms. I had no choice but to calm down and do as he said.
Again, we sat in silence. Not more than ten minutes had passed when Nathan addressed the driver. "I want to drive now. Get out of the car now and leave. You can take a cab back to the estate."
What the hell! Why did Nathan want the driver to go away? If that wasn't the bell of danger, then what was?
"No! Stay here. You can't leave me alone with this lunatic. He wishes to kill me. Please don't leave me alone," I begged the driver.
The car halted with a screeching sound, and the driver exited immediately. That man had chosen to ignore my cry for help, and now I was all on my own. I tried to open the car door and window, but it was all locked.
