Chapter 64
Sabine had one more thing to do. One more leverage she needed. Just one more.
They still had the upper hand. They had Lori. And soon... they would have her son too. It was perfect. Everything was falling according to plan. As long as Gabriel didn't do anything stupid, everything would go splendidly well.
"They've been under strict surveillance. What exactly do you want to do with them?"
Vara asked as they both walked towards the Fuller's house.
Sabine shrugged.
"I've had a lot of time to think about it... I don't think the Fullers would be of much use to me."
"I'd rather have them dead."
She answered.
In front of the door, Sabine turned and found a neighbor from the other house staring at them. The woman was watering her garden in a robe.
Nosy old thing.
Sabine thought as she waved to her and faked a smile.
The woman smiled uneasily.
"Are you here to see the Fullers?"
She asked and Sabine nodded.
"Yes."
"Oh wow... they've been having quite a lot of guests in the last few days..."
The woman answered and Sabine smiled tightly.
"I haven't seen them since yesterday morning. I hope they're good."
"Will you say hello to little Jack for me? Maybe I'll stop by."
The woman said and Sabine nodded.
"Sure! Will do."
"Make sure you get rid of her too."
Sabine whispered to Vara as she waved to the woman again.
"Anne and Tom Fuller."
Vara said as she pointed to the two people seating dutifully on the sofa.
Sabine smiled.
"I can't say I'm pleased to meet you..."
Sabine said.
Their faces looked distraught. The woman has puffy red eyes, she looked like she had been crying for hours.
The man on the other hand looked stoic. His face hard and gaunt.
"What happened on the night Lori gave birth? I'm curious to hear your side of the story."
Anne cleared her throat.
"Please... please don't hurt us... we meant no harm..."
"I asked you a question woman."
There was a short silence before her husband answered.
"When she went into premature labor. We were called because we were listed as her emergency contacts. She had no family that we knew of..."
"The birth was difficult. Extremely difficult and when the baby was born he was rushed to the NICU. He was pronounced dead a few minutes later."
Vara glanced at Sabine who was listening intently.
"Then how is he alive?"
Vara retorted and Sabine raised her hand, gesturing that Vara should shut her mouth.
"We don't know! We had no idea! Since legally, we were in charge of him. We asked to take his body away right away because we were stricken with grief. We didn't want an autopsy or anything... we were so distraught."
"On our way to the funeral home... something very weird happened..."
"He sneezed."
Mrs Fuller answered.
"We were so frightened... but then he started crying and we took him home..."
"We had him examined... he was fine. We were under no legal obligation to tell Lori. So we didn't."
Sabine shook her head.
"How? How did you even get away with that? How did she not find out?"
"There were times... times when she almost caught us... like when she came over to our house. She didn't have our address so we were shocked. And then I ran into her at a mall when I was shopping for baby things... if she had looked at me closely... she would have known, but she didn't... besides she was already working as a nanny then."
"Then she started asking for where he was buried and we had to quickly come up with something..."
"We made everyone involved keep quiet about it... and legally, he is our son. She lost all her rights to be his mother."
Sabine was teeming with excitement.
Young. The boy was young and he was already demonstrating extraordinary levels of nephilim power. Power that people would have killed for.
She needed to have him.
"Where is he? I want to see him."
"In the nursery."
Vara answered as she pointed to the hallways.
"Take me to him."
The nursery was small, small but cozy and Sabine could smell that scent. That scent that belonged to Lori all over the room. A small baby in a cot, with dark hair. Hair as dark as Lori's.
Sabine touched his cheek and smiled.
Oh he was perfect.
Vara stood by the door, watching Sabine. Sabine was acting strange. Too strange... this whole business with the Fullers.
She didn't understand it. Not one bit. Why was Sabine so invested in Lori's child?
Why?!
Lori didn't even know the child was alive... and given the circumstances around his birth... why would she want him?
"The Fullers. What are we going to do with them? Are you serious about killing them?"
She asked and Sabine nodded.
"I am."
"Make it look like an accident."
She said as she picked up the sleeping baby, gently, so gently that he didn't stir.
Vara's jaw dropped.
"Alpha! What are you doing?!"
Sabine glared at Vara.
"And what does it look like I'm doing?!"
"Are you taking him with you?!"
"Yes. He's more useful to us alive than dead."
She said as she walked out of the room.
Anne Fuller stood up as she watched Sabine approach the door.
"What?!"
"Where are you taking him to? What? What?"
She whispered and Sabine paused.
There was a framed picture on the wall. A picture of all three of them together. The baby and the Fullers.
She would need this.
She thought as she snatched the picture from the wall.
"Please! Please!"
The woman started wailing.
Sabine ignored her, slamming the door right after she left.
****************
“Help?! Help?!”
Elliot screamed as Lori laid on the floor. Two small cuts on her wrist, not too deep but just enough to cause panic.
The basement door opened a minute after.
“What happened?!”
One of Sabine’s men asked. He was bald. Bald headed with sinister looking eyebrows.
“She cut herself.”
Elliot said as he pointed to her.
“She needs medical attention, we need to stop the bleeding.”
He said and the man stood there for a while, contemplating his options.
He stared at Elliot.
“You’re Lyle’s brother right?”
He asked and Elliot nodded.
“Bring her up.”
He said and Elliot nodded.
In the cottage living room, Elliot placed Lori on the worn sofa, he knelt in front of her on the hardwood floor and applied pressure to the cut on the man’s orders while the two werewolves inside with them ransacked the tiny cottage for a first aid kit.
Elliot could hear them slamming cabinets, slamming doors and turning over stuff.
None! There was nothing like that.
“She’s getting too pale.”
Elliot warned. One of the werewolves ran towards him to check her pulse, he cursed loudly. Thankfully, Lori’s temperature and pale skin color was enough to raise an alarm and it made them bothered enough to start making calls and rambling.
Whoever they were talking to on the other side of the call seemed very angry at them. Elliot could bet that it was Sabine.
After the call they started talking to each other in low whispers, the one of them approached Lyle.
“Just! Just stay here! Apply pressure to it.”
He said and Elliot dutifully nodded. They both left the house.
When Elliot was sure he could hear no lingering werewolf nearby, he jerked Lori awake.
She stood up wobbly, she was weak, there was no way in hell she would survive an actual werewolf bite.
This was a bad idea! Too bad he didn’t have any other good ones. If he picked her up and ran they would be caught in at least two minutes by the werewolves hiding out in the bush.
It would be suicide to try something that stupid.
“How are we doing this?!”
She asked and he pointed to the open cottage window where the sun was finally setting.
He sat on the sofa and placed Lori’s head on his lap, stroking her hair softly.
He had tied the cuts with strips of fabric from his T-shirt. He didn’t touch a vein while he cut her, he had been as precise and gently as he could, but there was still a lot of blood. He only hoped she won’t suffer too much blood loss.
“The moon… it’s going to rise any minute now. I hope we have enough time.”
Lori nodded.
She was cold. Cold, weak and tired.
“Do you? Do you think this will work?!”
She asked him and Elliot shook his head.
“To be honest… I’d rather not… I’m starting to think it’s a horrible idea.”
He said as his legs shook nervously.
Lori sighed.
“If I don’t make it.. can you send a message to Gabriel for me?”
Elliot shook his head as he laughed nervously.
“You’ll have to find a way to tell him yourself because he’ll have my head when he sees me and finds out I’m the cause of all this.”
“He won’t…”
Lori drawled and Elliot shrugged, he had a splitting headache, courtesy of the super moon. He was trying so desperately to keep his wolf intact. At least until he needed to.
“Oh let’s not pretend Lori…”
Lori sighed.
She closed her eyes and tried to feel the mating bond. She tried to feel for Gabriel…
He was so far away. There but not also there… hopelessly, she called out his name, from her lips and in her mind.
Elliot wasn’t paying attention to her, but rather to the moon that was slowly coming out of the dark clouds. He had experienced his fair share of super moons, and he hated them. He already had a pretty lax control on his wolf, but they made it much more worse.
He clenched his jaw tight, his claws digging into the arm of the sofa. He could hear wolves nearby… they were coming up the hill, in their human form…
It was time.
He turned to Lori, shaking her as gently as he could.
“Lori…”
She opened her eyes, surprised to see that his eyes had become golden yellow. It startled her and she gasped.
“It’s time.“
He muttered and Lori nodded.
With one rough hand, Elliot pulled up her sweatshirt, exposing her bare waist. He could see her shaking slightly and he wanted to convince her that she would be fine and it’ll all be over in a minute but he couldn’t lie.
It wound hurt like a bitch, he thought as he felt his fangs growing, Lori gasped again as she looked at his face, his face slowly morphing into one of a beast, she pulled away from his grasp.
He pinned her down with a look, he managed to look as apologetic as he could. He didn’t want her to make it harder enough for him.
It was already hard enough for him.
In one swift motion, Elliot bit into her side.
Lori didn’t know where the courage to not scream came from, because she bit down her lips so hard it drew blood.
Elliot pulled away quickly.
“I’m sorry…”
He pleaded as he stood his distance.
Lori doubled over in pain.
Fuck! It hurt so bad! Like someone had not only taken a giant chunk out of her, but also put in acid.
This wasn’t how she felt when Gabriel bit her neck. No this was different!
“Lay down.”
Elliot commanded but she pushed him away.
“How long? When will the effects kick in?!”
She groaned and Elliot shook his head, he was pacing all around the room. Clearly he was also battling with his wolf.
“Anytime from now to the next day but the super moon should speed things up.”
The moon.
Lori looked up at the moon and instantly felt dizzy.
She blacked out.
