Chapter 14
-Good morning - James said as he strided into his office.
Several responded respectfully to his greeting. He was tired of doing the same thing day in and day out in the office. Sometimes he missed his old life.
He sat back in his chair and pulled his phone out of his pocket. Several flashes were coming out of it.
He snorted. Portia had been playing with a glitter applicator last night, that applicator had been a gift from Luna, causing Portia to spend the last two weeks putting glitter on everything she saw.
Now his phone had too much glitter all over the back, pink and purple. A color combination he wasn't too fond of.
He looked up at the large window of his office. The big blue sky caused a little pressure on his eyes. It was a sunny day.
His cell phone rang. It was an unknown number.
-James bexell, who is this? -he answered as he took small steps.
- Luna's boyfriend? - he heard through the line.
He stopped quickly.
- Yes? Can I help you?
-Yes, Samuel Atkings. May I ask what kind of deal you have with each other that she left town without telling me? - he asked angrily.
-Of course, Samuel. Luna hasn't spoken to me about you since she's been working here. How is that possible?
-She can be a little confusing.
James knew who she was. Luna had told him a few days after arriving in New York that her ex-boyfriend had been pursuing her insistently. It was a fact he needed to know if she was there, as it wouldn't be the first time he'd tried to get to her aggressively.
-Listen, you idiot, I don't know what your problem is. I know about you and how you've managed to make Luna's life miserable. I don't care who you are, but don't call back, or her.
He cut the call.
_
-Please, it's very serious. I need this month, just this month, to be with him. I know it's not my license, but I really wouldn't be asking for it if it wasn't necessary. -The young woman begged.
James sympathized.
-Well, you got it. Make sure someone takes care of your part. A month, no more.
-I'll keep an eye on my mail anyway. If you need anything, write me. I'll send my entire schedule to Lisa.
-Good. You can go. - he answered politely. Anyway, he was serious, not mean.
The young woman quickly left the place after leaving a folder on the desk and smiling gratefully.
- You know what? Maybe you should let Luna take care of her life. I mean, it's her privacy, she can do what she wants with it, don't you think? -Peter said. Walking in after Pia had left. In his hands he carried two cups of coffee.
-I know. But if it affects her safety it will inevitably affect Portia's.
-Sure, but I think maybe you should have given her the benefit of the doubt.
-What for? She came to tell me what a bad time she had because of that jerk, do you think she'd want to go have coffee with him? - he replied sarcastically.
-But it's her privacy, Bexell, do you expect the girl to bring you all the details of her life on a silver platter?
-No, Peter, it's just... no.
- Does she interest you?
James glared at him.
-What are you saying? She lives in my house, takes care of my daughter. Is it strange that I'm interested in her safety? Don't I have a right to know if something threatens that safety?
-No, you don't. - he joked. James looked at him menacingly.
-It's all right, Peter. Leave it at that. Do you know anything about Evan's place? - he changed the subject.
Peter ignored the sudden change and answered.
-Yes, I talked to him yesterday. He'll be open next week. I was flipping through the letter and it all sounds great. - He looked down - What happened to your phone?
-Uh, Luna gave Portia a glitter applicator and now half the house looks like a bowling ball.
-Oh, what about Portia? How's she feeling? - he asked, finally serious.
-Well, ever since Luna arrived, she hasn't let go of her. Which is good, but at the same time...I don't know.
-Why?
-You know, I don't want Portia to get attached to Luna. I know there will come a time when Luna will have to leave and it will be painful for her for sure.
-Well, tread lightly. A lot of kids have nannies, it's not uncommon. They leave and they accept it. -Peter said seriously.
-What do you mean? -He asked, staring at him.
- Portia tends to get too attached to people. You should tell her in time that Luna is with her but she can't stay forever. Sure, cautiously.
-Well, that's the way the deal has been. She knows that, at least I told her at the beginning.
-Okay. I should go, Marcie's waiting for me.
She got up along with James.
- I'll see you later.
Peter grabbed his cup and walked out with her. James noticed how angry he was about the call he had received earlier.
He looked at his watch, it was time to go home.
